Diabetes refers to a group of conditions characterized by a high level of blood glucose, commonly referred to as blood sugar. Too much sugar in the blood can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening health problems. There are two types of chronic diabetic conditions: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Pregnant women may acquire a transient form of the disease called “gestational diabetes” which usually resolves after the birth of baby. Pre-diabetes is when the blood sugar level is at the borderline: higher than normal, but lower than in diabetics. Prediabetes may or may not progress to diabetes. During food digestion, carbohydrates - or carb - break down into glucose which is carried by the bloodstream to various organs of the body. Here, it is either consumed as an energy source - in muscles for example - or is stored for later use in the liver. Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells of the pancreas and is necessary for glucose intake by target cells. In other words, when insulin is deficient, muscle or liver cells are unable to use or store glucose, and as a result, glucose accumulates in the blood. In healthy people, beta cells of the pancreas produce insulin; insulin binds to its receptor on target cells and induces glucose intake. In type 1 diabetes, beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system by mistake. The reason why this happens is unclear, but genetic factors are believed to play a major role. Insulin production is reduced; less insulin binds to its receptor on target cells; less glucose is taken into the cells, more glucose stays in the blood. Type 1 is characterized by early onset, symptoms commonly start suddenly and before the age of 20. Type 1 diabetes is normally managed with insulin injection. Type 1 diabetics are therefore “insulin dependent”. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces enough insulin but something goes wrong either with receptor binding or insulin signaling inside the target cells. The cells are not responsive to insulin and therefore cannot import glucose; glucose stays in the blood. In other words, type 2 diabetics are “insulin resistant”. Here again, genetic factors predispose susceptibility to the disease, but it is believed that lifestyle plays a very important role in type 2. Typically, obesity, inactive lifestyle, and unhealthy diet are associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is characterized by adult onset; symptoms usually appear gradually and start after the age of 30. Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 80 to 90% of all diabetics. Management focuses on weight loss and includes a low-carb diet.

Child Diabetes Breakthrough: New child diabetes study

Nine year old Bethan has Type 1 diabetes. She uses an special pump to deliver insulin when required, while Mum Lizzie watches her diet. Before her diagnosis, life was tough. Bethan Westcott-Storer, diabetes type one patient: "I felt very weak and tired all the time." Lizzie Storer, mother of Bethan: "We noticed that she'd become quite thin, she'd lost a lot of weight, but she didn't have all of the signs that other children normally have with type 1 - she didn't have the excess thirst and urinating. Just lost a lot of weight, so she's been diagnosed for 15 months now." Now Bethan's the picture of health...and the news could get better. The University of Exeter Medical School has made a major discovery that could lead to better treatment and even prevention of the disease. Professor Noel Morgan, University of Exeter Medical School: "It's always been thought that when people get type 1 diabetes they've lost as many as 90 percent of their insulin producing cells from their pancreas. What we've found is that while that might be the case for the younger children it certainly doesn't appear to be true for those that are older. They have quite a considerable reserve of cells left. That's a new insight and it might mean that if we could reactivate those cells we could help them to cope better with their illness." Researchers found that those diagnosed with diabetes before the age of seven develop a more aggressive form of the disease than teenagers. Although well adjusted to her daily routine, Bethan also has high hopes for the ongoing research. Bethan Westcott-Storer, diabetes type one patient: "If one day in the future they find a cure or something lots and lots of people are going to be really happy." A child diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of five faces up to 19,000 insulin injections and 50,000 finger-prick blood tests before they reach 18 years old. Chris' Story - 2 year old diagnosed with Type I Diabetes

03:23
http://idahocrazypancreas5k.blogspot.com/ On July 29, 2010 our family's lives changed forever. Our two year old son Chris was diagnosed with Type I Diabetes. It has been over a year since Chris' diagnosis, and we are still learning more and more about this disease every day. Chris will be insulin-dependent for the rest of his life. In the last seventeen months he has endured over 3,800 fingerpricks and 950 insulin injections. In addition to his rigorous blood testing and insulin shots, everything he consumes must be weighed and measured, and his blood levels need to be checked even while he sleeps and plays. Chris is usually always a trooper and rarely complains. He continues to learn how to check his own blood-sugar, and is brave enough to push in his shot sometimes too, with help from Mom & Dad! Chris continually amazes us and is a blessing to have in our lives as a daily reminder of spirit, humility, and a positive attitude. As a family we do our best to learn more whenever we can about diabetes and do our best to teach Chris so he can learn to manage it as he grows. At times we can all get a little over-whelmed and tired of thinking about Diabetes, because it's always there, everyday, no matter what. There are many devastating diseases in our world right now. The difference with juvenile diabetes is that wiping it out of existence is extremely attainable and within reach. We have hope that sometime in Chris' life he will be able to say, "I used to have Type I Diabetes." It's our mission to avoid the heart and kidney disease, blindness, amputation, and early death that is a reality for many people with juvenile diabetes. Something that has been very therapeutic for our family is getting involved with Diabetes fundraisers. As a family we have always found joy in Recreation and running road races. In fact Chris ran his first 1 mile kid race 1 week before he was diagnosed. Even though we have to keep a close eye on Chris and make sure his blood sugar is not getting too low, we still have found much joy in participating in these events. After hosting the Crazy Pancreas Race last year to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the #1 non-profit funder of diabetes research worldwide, we have decided to make this an annual even for the City of Inkom. We received a lot of positive feedback about the race last year, and we can't wait till next year for some more fun! In addition we would like to add in one more race, The Crazy 10k! We would also like to be able to better educate the community about Type I Diabetes and the research going on to improve quality of life for those living with it every day. Most of all we want to help the possibility of someday finding a cure. song "A little bit longer" by the Jonas Brothers

Often I hear the complain that people ignore symptoms of diabetes due to lack of understanding. Here, I have tried to explain in very simple words the work of our body and how our body tries to save itself when we ignore the symptoms of diabetes type II. If you have risk factors of diabetes and are experiencing any of these symptoms please have your blood tested for fasting blood sugar and HbA1c. HbA1c is a lab test which indicates average blood sugar of prior three month period.

Living With Diabetes and Without Junk Food

02:56
By Jamie - Age 14 | For seven years of my life, I grew up in the foster system. I had to leave my mom’s house because of the decision to stop being there for her children. At the time, it was just me, an eight year old girl, and my brother, and an eleven year old severely autistic boy. One day the police showed up at our house. They asked me a lot of questions and then told us I would be staying at my aunt's house with her three kids, and my brother to a home for his needs. I stayed with my Aunt and cousins for a year and a half, until one day my Aunt told me to pack some clothes. I thought I was going to spend some time with my other Aunt and cousins, so happily I went and packed some clothes but, once I was done I went to the front room and my Aunt told me and my cousins I was going away for some time. I didn’t know what that meant but, we all cried, and my ??? showed up. My ??? didn’t tell me too much on our car ride there but, for most of the ride I cried. Once we got there, I was greeted by someone I would soon look up to as my sister, and by more people I would soon consider my family. I lived there for 2 and a half years. I wanted that to be my forever home, my forever family. But I found out my biological mom had another baby. He was only 5 months old and the state wanted us to be together forever. I moved in with him and his foster family. ??? threw up, cried, fussed, changed his diapers. I never thought I’d have a little brother, but there he was right before my eyes. I thought that was it for my foster placements but, I was wrong. Something didn’t work in that home and, we were moved after a year and a half of staying there. Now, we were with our very first white foster parent. A single mother, with three cute, but crazy kids. To say the least on that home, it didn’t work and, we left. On my last day of school, we were taken to our next foster home and, our last one thank you jesus. Another white family with four kids. A boy in the eleventh grade, a girl ???, another girl in the seventh grade, and another boy in like the fifth grade. And of course two parents, a mom and a dad and two lovely black dogs. Those people showed me and my brother so much love and care even after our hearts were broken by so many people at so many different times. I’ve never had a father figure in my life, so when I got to this one I didn’t really know how it felt to have a father at all. December 31, 2014, we were adopted by these people. Being here for two years now, I’ve received lots of love, and crazy rules and groundings. I’m blessed to have a place to finally call home Do you LOVE junk food? Tons of people do - especially when we're kids, it's everywhere. And so, getting addicted to sugar is easy. Do you kind of HATE healthy foods like vegetables and fruit? You're not alone. Jamie, up until a few years ago, ate nothing but junk food - all the time - chips, soda, candy, anything she could find that had lots and lots of sugar, or was fried, or processed, or just plain bad for you. It was all she craved. Even though her Mom told her not to eat all that junk food, and tried to get her to eat better healthier foods, she just ignored her and went on eating whatever she wanted. And this went on for a few years, until, Jamie started having trouble hearing. She didn't think much of it, but it got bad enough so that her Mom ended up taking her to the hospital. After the nurse tested her blood sugar - which Jamie hated since she hates blood and needles - she came back with bad news. Jamie had diabetes! It was a diagnosis she did not expect nor a disease she wanted. Her Mom was concerned, but Jamie was just totally confused - she had to learn all about it fast, AND, she had to take medicine - insulin - every single day. So, with a serious fear of needles and shots, Jamie found out that she had to give herself the shots, and monitor and test her blood sugar levels on her own. It was scary, and people would look at her when she had to do it and make her feel different and uncomfortable. But the hardest part of all was that she had to stop eating all of the junk food and sugar and start eating healthy foods. As a diabetic, She had to totally change her diet. And eventually, she got used to her new diet and at making healthier choices for eating and snacking. She even got used to the shots and is really living a normal life - but she does have to take care of herself a little more carefully than most kids her age and manage her diabetes. This is an important storytime to tell and to hear. Everyone's got a story....we want to hear yours! Type 1 Diabetes - Understand the Basics

10:43
transcript This type of Diabetes was most widely known as juvenile diabetes as is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Unlike other forms of diabetes, such as Type 2 diabetes where the body does not produce enough insulin, Type 1 diabetes is a result of the body producing no insulin. As a result the daily impacts and potential complications from this type of diabetes are much more serious and those diagnosed with this form of diabetes need to be vigilant in their monitoring and management. First Some Type 1 Diabetes Statics.... Before we get into the weeds on the specifics regarding this type of diabetes let's revel some statics on the frequency of Type 1 versus other forms of diabetes. If you are concerned that your child is a candidate for this form of diabetes then these stats will help you rationalize the basis for your determination. One word of caution, it is always best to seek the advice of your physician as only they can confirm Type 1 diabetes. In addition, your physician can guide you through management of the diabetes if necessary. Data compiled from the National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 2011 (Dated 1/26/11) Total Population Impacted: 25.8 million children and adults in the United States. That is 8.3% of the population that is considered to have some form of diabetes. Although it is estimated that only 5% of the people have Type 1 Diabetes. Some more alarming facts are: 8 million people of the total number affected are diagnosed 0 million people go undiagnosed As many as 79 million people are prediabetic (we spoke about this topic in Installment No. 1) Broken down by age group: age 65 - 10.9 million, or 26.9% of all people in this age group have diabetes Between ages 20 and 65 - 25.6 million, or 11.3% of all people in this age group have diabetes Under 20 - 215,000, or 0.26% of all people in this age group have diabetes. However about 1 in 400 children develop Type 1 diabetes. Broken down by gender: 0 million, or 11.8% of all men aged 20 years or older have diabetes 6 million, or 10.8% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes Type 1 Health Concerns As with any type of diabetes we need to know the potential health issues. It is important to remember that if you have or are concerned of developing Type 1 diabetes, it does not necessarily mean that you will have the complications that are mentioned here. Proper management is the key here. Only through guidance from your medical professional can you properly manage any diabetes condition. Complications from Type 1 diabetes can include heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease (neuropathy) and in some cases amputation. In fact diabetes in general was considered an underlying cause or contributing factor in more than 231,000 deaths in 2007. Here are some specifics of the health concerns noted" Heart disease and stroke The risk of death for adults from heart disease is about 2 to 4 times higher than adults without diabetes. The risk for stroke is 2 to 4 times higher among people with diabetes. Blindness Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20-74 years. Kidney disease Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, accounting for 44% of new cases in 2008. In 2008, 48,374 people with diabetes began treatment for end-stage kidney disease in the United States. In 2008, a total of 202,290 people with end-stage kidney disease due to diabetes were living on chronic dialysis or with a kidney transplant in the United States. Nervous system disease (Neuropathy) About 60% to 70% of people with diabetes have mild to severe forms of nervous system damage. Amputation More than 60% of nontraumatic lower-limb amputations occur in people with diabetes. Now while this may cause you to pause, remember these are typical health issues with diabetes in general. So you may be asking what to do if your child has Type 1 diabetes? What can I do in raising my child to limit their potential for these health impacts. Well there are many resources on the Internet that deal specifically with this topic. One such reference is noted at the end of this article for your consideration. Living with Type 1 Diabetes You are told you have Type 1 diabetes. You feel it is the worst day of your life. I will be honest...it is not. Will it mean that you can go on with your life as you did before the diagnoses? No. But it does not mean your life as you know it has to stop either. It just means that you have to modify what and how you manage your daily life. If you can get into that mindset then there will be very little that you can't do. In fact here are some examples of people who did not let their Type 1 diabetes hold them back. Nat Strand, diagnosed at age 12,competed in the Amazing Race on CBS and won. Crystal Bowersox competed on American Idol Charlie Kimball became a NASCAR driver and competes in the Indy 500

You can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, but your risk increases if you are over 40 - especially if you are overweight or have a family history of type 2 diabetes. If you are over 40 make an appointment with your GP to get checked.

A1C and Diabetes. Spoken Hindi. Written English. Dr. Anup, MD Teaches Series

33:40
A1C is an average of the patients blood sugar (glucose) readings over the past three months and is the single most important test that can predict the future for the diabetic patient. Since the test correlates with the future complications from diabetes in the next few weeks to over 20 years; it is like a crystal ball for the diabetic patient says Dr. Anup, MD. A high level correlates with increased complications like blindness, heart attack, kidney damage, hospitalizations and even expenses on diabetes. It is absolutely necessary for a diabetic to understand this test and to know what to do if the levels are high, so that they can better control their condition and can avoid complications from diabetes. Now the test is even being used to diagnose new cases of diabetes. A1C Levels are useful in both the diagnosis and for the follow up of a diabetic. A1C is like the crystal ball that shows you your future. How is that? High levels of A1C in a known diabetic correlate with higher chances of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, hospital admission and diabetes related expenses. This is truly a reflection of what of what the future holds for the patient. The best part is that with proper actions and a to-do list the A1C levels can be brought down to 'Normal' within about a six month period. This DVD is a full 55 minute presentation (part of series of our over Diabetes Education Series' and discusses in very simple language how A1C is formed in the body, what are the normal and the abnormal values, what is the significance of abnormal values and how to fix the problem of the high abnormal value without suffering more serious side effects like low sugars of the therapy. Now the A1C levels are also being recommended not only to manage diabetes but to diagnose diabetes. We explain why that is a good idea for you and how it correlates with your blood sugar levels. If you can not afford to pay for watching this video contact us and we will help you. If you want to purchase a DVD copy of this video to gift to someone buy it at www.amazon.com and search under Dr Anup Teaches series or look for ISBN 9781603350000
