Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Diabetes refers to a group of conditions characterized by a high level of blood glucose, commonly referred to as blood sugar. Too much sugar in the blood can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening health problems. There are two types of chronic diabetic conditions: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Pregnant women may acquire a transient form of the disease called “gestational diabetes” which usually resolves after the birth of baby. Pre-diabetes is when the blood sugar level is at the borderline: higher than normal, but lower than in diabetics. Prediabetes may or may not progress to diabetes. During food digestion, carbohydrates - or carb - break down into glucose which is carried by the bloodstream to various organs of the body. Here, it is either consumed as an energy source - in muscles for example - or is stored for later use in the liver. Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells of the pancreas and is necessary for glucose intake by target cells. In other words, when insulin is deficient, muscle or liver cells are unable to use or store glucose, and as a result, glucose accumulates in the blood. In healthy people, beta cells of the pancreas produce insulin; insulin binds to its receptor on target cells and induces glucose intake. In type 1 diabetes, beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system by mistake. The reason why this happens is unclear, but genetic factors are believed to play a major role. Insulin production is reduced; less insulin binds to its receptor on target cells; less glucose is taken into the cells, more glucose stays in the blood. Type 1 is characterized by early onset, symptoms commonly start suddenly and before the age of 20. Type 1 diabetes is normally managed with insulin injection. Type 1 diabetics are therefore “insulin dependent”. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces enough insulin but something goes wrong either with receptor binding or insulin signaling inside the target cells. The cells are not responsive to insulin and therefore cannot import glucose; glucose stays in the blood. In other words, type 2 diabetics are “insulin resistant”. Here again, genetic factors predispose susceptibility to the disease, but it is believed that lifestyle plays a very important role in type 2. Typically, obesity, inactive lifestyle, and unhealthy diet are associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is characterized by adult onset; symptoms usually appear gradually and start after the age of 30. Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 80 to 90% of all diabetics. Management focuses on weight loss and includes a low-carb diet.

Living With Diabetes and Without Junk Food

By Jamie - Age 14 | For seven years of my life, I grew up in the foster system. I had to leave my mom’s house because of the decision to stop being there for her children. At the time, it was just me, an eight year old girl, and my brother, and an eleven year old severely autistic boy. One day the police showed up at our house. They asked me a lot of questions and then told us I would be staying at my aunt's house with her three kids, and my brother to a home for his needs. I stayed with my Aunt and cousins for a year and a half, until one day my Aunt told me to pack some clothes. I thought I was going to spend some time with my other Aunt and cousins, so happily I went and packed some clothes but, once I was done I went to the front room and my Aunt told me and my cousins I was going away for some time. I didn’t know what that meant but, we all cried, and my ??? showed up. My ??? didn’t tell me too much on our car ride there but, for most of the ride I cried. Once we got there, I was greeted by someone I would soon look up to as my sister, and by more people I would soon consider my family. I lived there for 2 and a half years. I wanted that to be my forever home, my forever family. But I found out my biological mom had another baby. He was only 5 months old and the state wanted us to be together forever. I moved in with him and his foster family. ??? threw up, cried, fussed, changed his diapers. I never thought I’d have a little brother, but there he was right before my eyes. I thought that was it for my foster placements but, I was wrong. Something didn’t work in that home and, we were moved after a year and a half of staying there. Now, we were with our very first white foster parent. A single mother, with three cute, but crazy kids. To say the least on that home, it didn’t work and, we left. On my last day of school, we were taken to our next foster home and, our last one thank you jesus. Another white family with four kids. A boy in the eleventh grade, a girl ???, another girl in the seventh grade, and another boy in like the fifth grade. And of course two parents, a mom and a dad and two lovely black dogs. Those people showed me and my brother so much love and care even after our hearts were broken by so many people at so many different times. I’ve never had a father figure in my life, so when I got to this one I didn’t really know how it felt to have a father at all. December 31, 2014, we were adopted by these people. Being here for two years now, I’ve received lots of love, and crazy rules and groundings. I’m blessed to have a place to finally call home Do you LOVE junk food? Tons of people do - especially when we're kids, it's everywhere. And so, getting addicted to sugar is easy. Do you kind of HATE healthy foods like vegetables and fruit? You're not alone. Jamie, up until a few years ago, ate nothing but junk food - all the time - chips, soda, candy, anything she could find that had lots and lots of sugar, or was fried, or processed, or just plain bad for you. It was all she craved. Even though her Mom told her not to eat all that junk food, and tried to get her to eat better healthier foods, she just ignored her and went on eating whatever she wanted. And this went on for a few years, until, Jamie started having trouble hearing. She didn't think much of it, but it got bad enough so that her Mom ended up taking her to the hospital. After the nurse tested her blood sugar - which Jamie hated since she hates blood and needles - she came back with bad news. Jamie had diabetes! It was a diagnosis she did not expect nor a disease she wanted. Her Mom was concerned, but Jamie was just totally confused - she had to learn all about it fast, AND, she had to take medicine - insulin - every single day. So, with a serious fear of needles and shots, Jamie found out that she had to give herself the shots, and monitor and test her blood sugar levels on her own. It was scary, and people would look at her when she had to do it and make her feel different and uncomfortable. But the hardest part of all was that she had to stop eating all of the junk food and sugar and start eating healthy foods. As a diabetic, She had to totally change her diet. And eventually, she got used to her new diet and at making healthier choices for eating and snacking. She even got used to the shots and is really living a normal life - but she does have to take care of herself a little more carefully than most kids her age and manage her diabetes. This is an important storytime to tell and to hear. Everyone's got a story....we want to hear yours! Take Dr. Berg's Body Type Quiz: http://bit.ly/BodyTypeQuiz Dr. Eric Berg talks about Sugar and diabetes. Sugar increases insulin which lowers the sugar in the blood and puts it in storage as fat. Pursuing the cure for diabetes at UHN

"It sucks". That was Joey Lavers reaction to his Type 1 diabetes diagnosis at age 14. The 'sucks' part for Lavers is the relentless daily burden of painful needle pricks to monitor his blood sugar and injections of life-saving insulin. Now aged 19, Lavers is buoyed by the research of UHN's Dr. Cristina Nostro and her colleagues at the McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine in Toronto. Dr. Nostro has successfully developed insulin-producing cells from stem cells in her lab. With that success in the lab Dr. Nostro is predicting human clinical trials within the next few years. "It's exciting", says Lavers, who says he'll offer to even be a "guinea pig" for the trial. WATCH Joey's story and the latest on Dr. Nostro's insulin-producing stem cells. www.uhn.ca

What are the chances of having a diabetic child? Can diabetes cause birth defects? Infants of mothers who have diabetes may have more difficulty regulating their blood sugar. High blood sugar can be caused by illness or stress. It's also common in preemies born very early, because the organ that makes insulin (pancreas) is not fully developed You Want Really Control Your Sugar Levels by Using Natural Remedies And Smoothies At Home And Low Price, Then Watch This Channel #FD ( Free Diabetes ) : https://goo.gl/jBTFPc And Also Follow Us On Facebook : https://goo.gl/7Jws9o Blogger: https://goo.gl/StU7lW Play List : https://goo.gl/9VsAEq Twitter : https://goo.gl/4OcKoW Babies Born With Diabetes Can Be Cured Without Insulin Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) is defined as a disease that affects an infant and their body's ability to produce or use insulin. NDM is a monogenic form of diabetes that occurs in the first 6 months of life. Infants do not produce enough insulin, leading to an increase in glucose accumulation. PNDM and TNDM are inherited genetically from the mother or father of the infant. Different genetic inheritance or genetic mutations can lead to different diagnosis of NDM, Permanent or Transient Neonatal Diabetes Mellitus. A new study suggests, Babies born with diabetes can now be treated successfully with tablets instead of injections. Scientists have examined data collected over the last decade from patients diagnosed with neonatal diabetes who switched from receiving insulin injections to “sulphonylurea tablets”. Researchers from the University of Exeter have collaborated with groups in Norway, Italy, France and Poland to analyse findings from 81 patients from 20 different countries. The results showed they were successfully treated through sulphonylurea tablets and had excellent blood sugar control over the long-term. Neonatal diabetes is diagnosed before the age of six months and in half of all cases is caused by a mutation in their KCNJ11 gene, which is involved in keeping insulin-producing cells in the pancreas working properly. This results in life-threatening diabetes soon after birth. In 2006, scientists discovered that around half of people with neonatal diabetes could “come off insulin” injections and be treated more effectively with “sulphonylurea tablets”. In these patients, the tablets provide the key to unlocking the closed door of the insulin-producing beta cells. Half of people with type 2 diabetes treated with sulphonylureas no longer have good blood sugar control after five years. Study has found that in neonatal diabetes, the tablets are safe and they work long term - with 93% of people in the study remaining on sulphonylureas alone after 10 years, with excellent blood sugar control Thanks For Watching This Video Like and Subscribe ========================================== DISCLAIMER: The information provided on this channel and its videos is for general purposes only and should not be considered as professional advice. Type 1 Diabetes - Understand the Basics

10:43
transcript This type of Diabetes was most widely known as juvenile diabetes as is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Unlike other forms of diabetes, such as Type 2 diabetes where the body does not produce enough insulin, Type 1 diabetes is a result of the body producing no insulin. As a result the daily impacts and potential complications from this type of diabetes are much more serious and those diagnosed with this form of diabetes need to be vigilant in their monitoring and management. First Some Type 1 Diabetes Statics.... Before we get into the weeds on the specifics regarding this type of diabetes let's revel some statics on the frequency of Type 1 versus other forms of diabetes. If you are concerned that your child is a candidate for this form of diabetes then these stats will help you rationalize the basis for your determination. One word of caution, it is always best to seek the advice of your physician as only they can confirm Type 1 diabetes. In addition, your physician can guide you through management of the diabetes if necessary. Data compiled from the National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 2011 (Dated 1/26/11) Total Population Impacted: 25.8 million children and adults in the United States. That is 8.3% of the population that is considered to have some form of diabetes. Although it is estimated that only 5% of the people have Type 1 Diabetes. Some more alarming facts are: 8 million people of the total number affected are diagnosed 0 million people go undiagnosed As many as 79 million people are prediabetic (we spoke about this topic in Installment No. 1) Broken down by age group: age 65 - 10.9 million, or 26.9% of all people in this age group have diabetes Between ages 20 and 65 - 25.6 million, or 11.3% of all people in this age group have diabetes Under 20 - 215,000, or 0.26% of all people in this age group have diabetes. However about 1 in 400 children develop Type 1 diabetes. Broken down by gender: 0 million, or 11.8% of all men aged 20 years or older have diabetes 6 million, or 10.8% of all women aged 20 years or older have diabetes Type 1 Health Concerns As with any type of diabetes we need to know the potential health issues. It is important to remember that if you have or are concerned of developing Type 1 diabetes, it does not necessarily mean that you will have the complications that are mentioned here. Proper management is the key here. Only through guidance from your medical professional can you properly manage any diabetes condition. Complications from Type 1 diabetes can include heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, blindness, kidney disease, nervous system disease (neuropathy) and in some cases amputation. In fact diabetes in general was considered an underlying cause or contributing factor in more than 231,000 deaths in 2007. Here are some specifics of the health concerns noted" Heart disease and stroke The risk of death for adults from heart disease is about 2 to 4 times higher than adults without diabetes. The risk for stroke is 2 to 4 times higher among people with diabetes. Blindness Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults aged 20-74 years. Kidney disease Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, accounting for 44% of new cases in 2008. In 2008, 48,374 people with diabetes began treatment for end-stage kidney disease in the United States. In 2008, a total of 202,290 people with end-stage kidney disease due to diabetes were living on chronic dialysis or with a kidney transplant in the United States. Nervous system disease (Neuropathy) About 60% to 70% of people with diabetes have mild to severe forms of nervous system damage. Amputation More than 60% of nontraumatic lower-limb amputations occur in people with diabetes. Now while this may cause you to pause, remember these are typical health issues with diabetes in general. So you may be asking what to do if your child has Type 1 diabetes? What can I do in raising my child to limit their potential for these health impacts. Well there are many resources on the Internet that deal specifically with this topic. One such reference is noted at the end of this article for your consideration. Living with Type 1 Diabetes You are told you have Type 1 diabetes. You feel it is the worst day of your life. I will be honest...it is not. Will it mean that you can go on with your life as you did before the diagnoses? No. But it does not mean your life as you know it has to stop either. It just means that you have to modify what and how you manage your daily life. If you can get into that mindset then there will be very little that you can't do. In fact here are some examples of people who did not let their Type 1 diabetes hold them back. Nat Strand, diagnosed at age 12,competed in the Amazing Race on CBS and won. Crystal Bowersox competed on American Idol Charlie Kimball became a NASCAR driver and competes in the Indy 500

Symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes

06:04
The statistics surrounding Type 2 Diabetes are staggering: nearly 26 million children and adults in America have diabetes - 90 to 95 percent of those diagnosed have type 2 Diabetes. This means nearly 10 percent of the American population has this condition including 25 percent of seniors. According to the National Institutes of Health, 18.7 percent of non-Hispanic blacks, ages twenty and older, have diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes. ThatÕs nearly 5 million people. And approximately 10.4 of Hispanics over 20 years of age have diagnosed diabetes. Controlling Type 2 Diabetes depends a great deal on a patientÕs compliance not only in taking medications, but with lifestyle modifications as well. In this program, experts will discuss the significant role of diet, exercise and lifestyle changes in treating and monitoring Type 2 Diabetes. If these efforts do not help keep blood sugar at normal or near-normal levels, patients will likely be prescribed medication to help them in this crucial effort.

A1C and Diabetes. Spoken Hindi. Written English. Dr. Anup, MD Teaches Series

33:40
A1C is an average of the patients blood sugar (glucose) readings over the past three months and is the single most important test that can predict the future for the diabetic patient. Since the test correlates with the future complications from diabetes in the next few weeks to over 20 years; it is like a crystal ball for the diabetic patient says Dr. Anup, MD. A high level correlates with increased complications like blindness, heart attack, kidney damage, hospitalizations and even expenses on diabetes. It is absolutely necessary for a diabetic to understand this test and to know what to do if the levels are high, so that they can better control their condition and can avoid complications from diabetes. Now the test is even being used to diagnose new cases of diabetes. A1C Levels are useful in both the diagnosis and for the follow up of a diabetic. A1C is like the crystal ball that shows you your future. How is that? High levels of A1C in a known diabetic correlate with higher chances of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, hospital admission and diabetes related expenses. This is truly a reflection of what of what the future holds for the patient. The best part is that with proper actions and a to-do list the A1C levels can be brought down to 'Normal' within about a six month period. This DVD is a full 55 minute presentation (part of series of our over Diabetes Education Series' and discusses in very simple language how A1C is formed in the body, what are the normal and the abnormal values, what is the significance of abnormal values and how to fix the problem of the high abnormal value without suffering more serious side effects like low sugars of the therapy. Now the A1C levels are also being recommended not only to manage diabetes but to diagnose diabetes. We explain why that is a good idea for you and how it correlates with your blood sugar levels. Prof. Derek LeRoith, MD, PhD - specialist in Endocrinology and Diabetes, discusses what brought him into this field and what led him to do research. Prof. LeRoith explains that Type 1 Diabetes, former “juvenile onset diabetes”, usually starts at a young age yet can suddenly occur at any age later in life. He tells us how the pancreas are involved with Type 1 Diabetes. We learn that insulin has helped as treatment for Type 1 Diabetes. If Type 1 Diabetes is not controlled, complications such as eye disease, kidney disease and nerve disease can develop. Type 1 Diabetes can lead to End Stage Renal Disease and cause the patient to go into dialysis and to be in need of a kidney transplant. Today, it is easy for Type 1 Patients to treat Diabetes by injecting themselves with a pen containing insulin. For more information, see our videos on our YouTube Channel; Live Doctors.

Diabetes 2.0 - Next Generation Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment Video – Brigham and Women’s

06:25
Diabetes is an increasingly common disease. Overall, approximately nine percent of all Americans have diabetes. Over the age of 65, the prevalence of diabetes is even higher, affecting as many as one-fourth of adults. Diabetes is a disease that affects many organ systems over time. As a result, it’s important that patients adhere to their medications; however, this can be challenging because of the side effects that many patients experience with their diabetes medications. Dr. Marie E. McDonnell, Director of the Diabetes Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, describes research aimed at developing more precise, targeted diabetes care to improve patient outcomes while minimizing side effects. She also describes new diabetes treatments including beta cell restoration and islet cell transplants.
