This symposium explores on the ancient city of Tyre, founded in 2750 B.C. by the Phoenicians, who created an alphabet and the first democracy in the world with a parliament and senate elected directly by the citizens. Tyre is the legendary birthplace of Europa, the daughter of the King of Tyre, the namesake of Europe. The city and the civilization was left in ruins by Alexander the Great who went to war against the Tyreans. Two St. John Providence Health System hospitals, Providence Hospital and St. John Hospital Macomb-Oakland, are ranked as top 50 hospitals in the United States for heart care, according to an independent national study conducted by Thomson Reuters, a healthcare information company. This is the 10th consecutive year that Providence has been named to the list, making it the only hospital in southeast Michigan to receive this recognition ten years in a row. St. John Macomb-Oakland is ranked for the second consecutive year. Both hospitals were recognized in the category of Teaching Hospitals with Cardiovascular Residency Programs. In its 12th year, the study singled out 50 hospitals rather than the traditional practice of naming 100 winners. The study examined the performance of 1,022 hospitals by analyzing outcomes for patients with heart failure and heart attacks and for those who received coronary bypass surgery and percutaneous coronary interventions such as angioplasties. The study shows that 96 percent of cardiovascular inpatients survive and approximately 93 percent remain complication-free, indicative of improved cardiovascular care across-the-board over the past decade. 2018 Demystifying Medicine: The opioid epidemic: how, where, and what can be done? Air date: Tuesday, April 17, 2018, 4:00:00 PM Category: Demystifying Medicine Runtime: 01:49:03 Description: Demystifying Medicine Overdose deaths from opioid use have nearly quadrupled since the year 2000, and opioids now kill more people each year in the United States than guns or car accidents. We know how the opioid crisis came to be; we know what opioids do to the brain. Now we must put our heads together to curb the epidemic fast. Two of the most prominent figures in the national opioid discussion — NIDA Director Nora Volkow, M.D., Ph.D., and NINDS Director Walter Koroshetz, M.D. — describe in detail the state of the opioid crisis and what NIH is doing about it. Come to the lecture to get plugged in to one of the most pressing public health emergencies of our times. Every day, more than 115 Americans die after overdosing on opioids, a four-fold increase since 2000, and the numbers continue to climb. Toward this effort, NIH has nearly doubled funding for research on pain and on opioid misuse and addiction from approximately $600 million in fiscal year 2016 to $1.1 billion in fiscal year 2018, made possible from a funding boost by Congress. The focus of NIH's efforts centers on ways to reduce the over prescription of opioids, accelerate development of effective non-opioid therapies for pain, and provide more flexible options for treating opioid addiction. This lecture describes the state of the crisis, the state of our efforts, and how you can be a part of the solution. The Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series is designed to help bridge the gap between advances in biology and their applications to major human diseases. The lectures include presentations of patients, pathology, diagnosis, and therapy in the context of major diseases and current research. All clinicians, trainees including fellows, medical students, Ph.D. students, and other healthcare and research professionals are welcome to attend. On April 26, the IOP hosted former US Representative Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) for a discussion on the politics of mental health parity. Kennedy examined the broken state of mental health care in America and the issues the electorate should be paying attention to this fall. The son of Senator Ted Kennedy, Patrick left Congress after his father’s death to devote his career to advocacy for brain diseases by fostering public awareness and pushing for policy changes. In his recent book about his personal struggle and family history of addiction, Kennedy criticizes the current system that treats addiction and other mental health afflictions as personal failures rather than medical conditions. Given the prevalence of this issue, how do the proposals from candidates up and down the ballot shape up and what actions can we expect following the election this year?
