For more info: https://draxe.com/vitamin-d-deficiency-symptoms/?utm_campaign=Youtube-Apr-2015&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube&utm_term=vitaminddeficiency In this video I’m going to talk about the benefits of vitamin D as well as symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. In certain studies, Americans has been found to be the #1 population in vitamin D deficiency. Some of the main symptoms of vitamin D deficiency are a weakened immune system, candida or bacterial overgrowth, emotional ups and downs, hormone imbalance, trouble putting on muscle or losing weight, weakened bones or teeth, cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. Vitamin D supports having a healthy immune response, digestive health, hormone balance, and more. The biggest causes of vitamin D deficiency are not getting enough sunlight, certain chemicals from plastic bottles (bpa), and toxicity. Try to get outside everyday for about 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. Certain foods that are sources of vitamin D are wild caught fish, raw fermented milk, mushrooms, and eggs. However, there are small amounts in the food you eat. For a good supplement, I would recommend a high quality vitamin D supplement. You don’t want to take vitamin D2, but you do want to take vitamin D3. For supplementation, take about 2000-5000 IUs a day. However, if you have a severe deficiency, then for 1-2 months, you may take 5000 IUs twice daily. Lastly, you want to take your vitamin D3 with some form of fat like coconut oil or avocado to help absorption in your body. For more on naturally overcoming Vitamin D deficiency, you can check my article: http://draxe.com/vitamin-d-deficiency/?utm_campaign=Youtube-Nov-2014&utm_medium=social&utm_source=youtube&utm_term=vitamind In this video, I’m going to talk about how to overcome Vitamin D deficiency with diet and lifestyle. Vitamin D is a prohormone, which is essential for balancing the hormones in your body, and a fat-soluble vitamin, which supports the brain, bones, and tissue. Some warning signs that you may be Vitamin D deficient are if you struggle with any type of mood disorder, autoimmune disease, weak bones, weak muscles, or poor immune system. In order to overcome a Vitamin D deficiency, you may want to get outside more often to get 20-30 minutes of natural sunlight. The average person should be getting about 5000 IUs a day. You also want to be consuming more Vitamin D-rich foods like wild-caught fish, raw fermented dairy products, egg yokes, and mushrooms. Lastly, you want to be consuming a high quality Vitamin D3 supplement (5000 IUs daily). If you want to overcome Vitamin D deficiency, follow these steps and you will start seeing results! *This content is strictly the opinion of Dr. Josh Axe, and is for informational and educational purposes only. Vitamin D Deficiency - 1.5 years of recovery This video is about my year and a half long recovery from vitamin d deficiency. I have supplemented with vitamin d3 for 1.5 years. Months 1-6 = 70,000 iu/week Months 7-12 = 35,000 iu/week Months 13-18+ = 15,000-20,000 iu/week I recently added vitamin k2, please talk to your doctor before taking this. Especially if you take a blood thinning medication. Vitamin k2 will have the opposite effect of a blood thinner and will help to thicken/clot your blood. If you are have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), hormonal imbalance, or infertility, you may want to see an acupuncturist. Acupuncture has helped me a lot with balancing my hormones and regulating my period. I had amenorrhea for years and have finally been able to get multiple periods naturally. I used to have really painful dry eyes. They have gotten better since recovering from vitamin d deficiency. I do have allergies though that make my eyes itchy and feel like sand paper. I take an allergy medication before bed and put vaseline on my eye lid, around my eyes and on my nose. I wash it off first thing in the morning. Some other symptoms I had include: red tinted skin, numbness/tingling in fingers and toes, fatigue, weakness, bone pain, brain fog, unbalance mood/irritable, difficulty losing weight, excess fat in mid section (visceral fat), bloating in abdomen, sugar cravings, muscle aches/tingling Disclaimer: This video is solely based on my experience and is meant only to share that information. One of the very first Medical Lies I remember being taught in medical school was that Vitamin D drops were necessary for exclusively breastfed babies because human mothers don't secrete Vitamin D in their breast milk. It struck me as very odd at the time, but I was too busy and too tired to research it, so I filed it away for later. A few years later I finally had time to look into this "fact" and I found a large study done by a researcher in the Carolinas which showed this to be just what it was, a medical lie. I was so happy to find out this wasn't true, when lactating moms are given the right building blocks to make their milk with... Millions of people worldwide are deficient in Vitamin D and never know it until sickness strikes. Our immune system is directly affected. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for adults is 600 international units (IU) of vitamin D a day. That goes up to 800 IU a day for those older than age 70. To meet this level, choose foods that are rich in vitamin D. For example, choose fortified foods, such as milk and yogurt, and fatty fish, such as salmon, trout, tuna and halibut. Vegans can get their vitamin D from mushrooms, fortified soy milk, fortified breakfast cereals, almond milk, and tofu, If you're concerned about whether you're getting enough vitamin D, talk to your doctor about your diet and whether a vitamin supplement might benefit you. We hear all about this all the time, but is it really true? Does wimpy old vitamin D NEED Vitamin K? http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Do you need vitamin k with vitamin d? Vitamin D A hormone, not an actual vitamin, that your skin makes when exposed to sunlight, so it does not need to acquire it from food if adequate sunlight is available The only natural foods that contain vitamin D are fish and egg yolks Most of us are deficient in vitamin D as we do not spend much time outdoors. Additionally, where we live can limit our access to vitamin D - if you live below 37 degrees south or above 37 degrees north you do not have access to sufficient sunlight except during the summer months. ( This line of latitude crosses below Colorado, Utah and Kansas, so the majority of us in the US require additional dietary vitamin D throughout the year even if we spend time outdoors Sunscreen and skin pigmentation can also act as barriers to vitamin D absorption What Does Vitamin D Do? Reduces belly fat Of all the places to lose fat, the middle of our bodies is usually the hardest and the most important, both for looking lean and for being healthy. Waist-to-hip ratio is a factor in your risk for heart disease and type 2 diabetes Research bomb: A study published in the journal of Clinical Nutrition had 23 overweight participants who all went through a 12-week resistance training program. Half of them took 4,000 IU’s of vitamin D while the others received a placebo. While both groups lost the same amount of fat, the group that took the vitamin D supplements were more likely to have lowered their waist-to-hip ratio to a greater extent when compared to the placebo group. (3) Hormone Regulation and Bone Health The parathyroid glands, located in your neck, release parathyroid hormone. Parathyroid hormone regulates the calcium in your body: When the level of calcium in your blood is low, your parathyroid releases PTH. PTH signals for calcium to be leeched from bones and released into the blood, while also telling your kidneys to create more bioavailable vitamin D. This form of active vitamin D tells your gut to absorb more calcium, as long as you have sufficient vitamin D available. When you are deficient in vitamin D, your body will not absorb enough calcium from your diet and too much calcium will be taken from the bones to be available in the blood. Calcium plays more roles than just bone health - it is crucial for proper functioning of your nervous and muscular systems, so the body is able to take calcium from the bones to perform other functions. Vitamin K Vitamin K is helpful in blood clotting and bone strength. May also help to prevent heart disease, prostate cancer and Alzheimer’s Vitamin K2 and vitamin D3 work together to strengthen bones through their impact on calcium While vitamin D3 essentially regulates how much calcium is absorbed in the diet, vitamin K2 tells the calcium where to go, directing it to bones rather than soft tissues. When calcium attaches to arteries, known as hardening of the arteries, it can lead to cardiovascular complications. Without vitamin K2, the calcium absorbed will not go towards strengthening your bones, and thus vitamin K2 is crucial in the functioning of vitamin D3. Vitamin K2 comes from meats, eggs, hard cheeses and insects. Many people are also deficient in vitamin K2. Diet and Supplementation The best way to stay healthy is to eat a balanced diet full of leafy greens, fruits, veggies and lean proteins. This is how we can be sure we are obtaining a full range of vitamins and minerals. Vitamin D3 is one vitamin/hormone that we often have to supplement. If your supplement vitamin D3, be sure to obtain enough vitamin K2, either through a diet with meats and eggs, or through supplementation as well. Also be sure to obtain calcium through your diet, such as yogurt, leafy greens and legumes, or through supplementation. If you do not have all three in your diet, you may be doing more harm than good. References: 1. The American academy and pediatrics dose recommend that all breast feed babies receive a vitamin D supplement because human milk dose not contain enough vitamin D and a vitamin D deficiency can lead to certain diseases or health conditions one of which is rickets and our bodies naturally synthesize vitamin D by getting sun exposure but obviously we are not taking our babies out and exposing them to the sun they should wear sun screen and for the first few months of life be protected from the sun. So its very important to give this vitamin supplement. Now you noticed that your little one doesn't like it and they seem to be aware more alert after they've gotten it and his could just be the taste, its not a stimulant of any kind, its not something that would actually keep your baby up but just the taste alone would wake your baby wake up and not necessary your feel comfortable. So because its important you need to always weigh out the risk and benefits of different things. There is a few things you could try for example give it when your baby is going to be up and alert not when your baby is trying to go to sleep and also wash it down with a nursing session afterwards or with a bottle and you also could if you wanted to put a couple of drops into pumped breast milk and feed it to your baby in a bottle if you are bottle feeding your baby at times. If you have any other questions about it don't hesitate to ask your pediatrician and they can tell you risk versus benefits and maybe shed some more light on it for you. But if you have any other questions for me in the future feel free to ask them on our Facebook page facebook.com/intermountainmom and recommend us to your friends and family too.

We often get this vitamin from exposure to sunlight, but it is also obtained by eating certain foods such as fish and dairy products. Vitamin D supplementation is also popular, since getting enough of this vitamin is difficult from diet alone. Unfortunately, there are quite a few individuals who are deficient in this vitamin without even knowing it as the signs and symptoms are either subtle or not well known. Over time this could have a negative effect on an individuals quality of life. Lets discuss some signs and symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. 1. Those who are vitamin D deficient may feel more fatigued and tired. Since there are so many reasons why we can feel tired and fatigued during the day, such as lack of sleep or obesity, vitamin D deficiency is often overlooked. Vitamin D deficiency can cause daytime fatigue or even make it harder to get out of bed in the mornings, even with quality sleep. 2. Vitamin D plays an important role in keeping our immune system strong and free from different bacteria and illness. This is because vitamin D directly effects the cells that are responsible for fighting against infection. Therefore, another sign and symptom of vitamin D deficiency is getting sick more often. Low levels of vitamin D can be a contributing factor to becoming infected with cold and flus more often. As well, it has been found that taking vitamin D supplements may reduce the risk of certain respiratory tract infections. 3. Another possible symptom of vitamin D deficiency is bone and lower back pain. Vitamin D is an important vitamin for maintaining overall bone health. It supports bone health and helps with the body’s absorption of calcium. It has been found that those individuals with a vitamin D deficiency were more like to have back pain which often limited their daily activities. As well, they were also more likely to have bone pain through out their bodies, such as in their legs and joints. A deficiency in this vitamin will not only cause bone pain, but it can also cause bone loss since it not only helps with calcium absorption, but also bone metabolism. This can lead to lower bone mineral density. 4. Vitamin D deficiency may also negatively effect our mood. Feelings of depression may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency. This has often been linked to older adults. By being deficient in this vitamin, it may also cause seasonal depression during the colder months, when exposure to sunlight is limited. Depression and all mental health symptoms are complex and should be discussed with your medical practitioner to determine its exact cause and remedy. 5. Lastly, another sign and symptom of vitamin D deficiency may be hair loss. When hair loss is severe, this can be the result of nutrient deficiency. Hair loss may be a sign of vitamin D deficiency in female-patten hair loss. As well, there have been links found between low levels of vitamin D and alopecia areata, and low levels of this vitamin may be a risk factor for developing this autoimmune disease which can effect hair loss. Be sure to discuss any of the above signs and symptoms with your medical practitioner to determine their exact cause and also to discuss the correct amount of vitamin D you should be taking daily to support your health. SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/user/DrJohnKiel FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/medicinelifestyle TWITTER: https://twitter.com/LifestyleMedYou Hey folks, Dr Kiel here, and I want to take a few minutes to talk about the research and evidence regarding vitamin D supplementation and testosterone. There’s a fair amount of research out there that is compelling and growing, so I took some time to summarize and condense it for your benefit. How does vitamin D regulate testosterone? Primarily this occurs because vitamin D inhibits the process of aromatization in which testosterone is changed into estrogen. It also appears that vitamin D may enhance the sensitivity of cell receptors in the testicular glands that produce testosterone. The best source of vitamin D is natural sunlight. However, that’s not always an option and dietary sources include fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel), fish liver, beef liver, cheese, egg yolks, and fortified foods (namely, milk and breakfast cereals). Many of these studies are looking at individuals who have a deficiency in vitamin D for one reason or another. Like most vitamins, minerals and supplements, there is almost certainly a saturation point at which the benefits subside. Regarding testosterone, it seems relatively clear that men with low vitamin D will have an increase in testosterone when they begin supplementing. That benefit is not as obvious or well studied in men who have normal levels of vitamin D. And on a final note, in the grand scheme of things, vitamin D supplementation has relatively few, if any major side effects when taken at the recommended daily allowance and should be part of a baseline supplement regimen for weight lifters. Do you know how to take your vitamins and supplements? Timing is everything when it comes to taking your vitamins and supplements, so we've put together a guide to help you maximize the powerful health benefits that come from taking them at the right time. Read more about this on our blog: http://blog.professionalsupplementcenter.com/the-best-time-to-take-nutritional-supplements/ Morning: -Probiotics - Probiotics are best taken in the morning on an empty stomach. • When the stomach is empty, digestive activity is quiet and stomach acid and pH balance are relatively low, increasing the chances for the helpful microorganisms to thrive. -Iron - Iron is best absorbed in the morning on an empty stomach. • Caffeine, dairy and calcium can negatively affect absorption, so it's best to avoid these for several hours after taking iron. -Multivitamins - Take multivitamins with your first meal. In the morning! • As multivitamins contain both water and fat soluble vitamins, be sure to include some healthy fats with your meal for optimal absorption. -B-Complex vitamins - Taking B vitamins with breakfast helps to boost your metabolism and convert your food into energy, which can be used throughout the day. -Vitamin C- Vitamin C is best taken in the morning to support the immune system and boost energy levels. • Vitamin C is a water soluble vitamin that lasts only a few hours in the blood stream, so if your formula recommends more than 1 tablet per day, take it in divided doses with meals to get the full benefit. Noon: -CoQ10 - CoQ10 is best taken at lunch time with a meal that contains dietary fats. • Avoid taking CoQ10 late in the day so it doesn't disturb your sleep. -Vitamin D - Vitamin D is best taken with a meal that contains dietary fats. • It's possible that Vitamin D can negatively affect sleep, so lunch time is a good time to get your Vitamin D. -Iodine - Iodine is not stored in the body, so regular intake is needed. kelp tablets taken with lunch may boost midday energy levels. -Vitamin K - Vitamin K is best absorbed along with dietary fats and ideally should be taken during the middle of the day. • Avoid taking vitamin K if you are taking Coumadin or any anticoagulant prescription drug, as Vitamin K can interfere with the effects of the medication. Night: - Fish oil - Important to support many aspects of health, fish oil is best taken with a main meal like dinner to aid absorption. -Calcium - Calcium aids nerve transmission and muscle function. To get the full benefit, take calcium in the evening along with magnesium. -Magnesium - Magnesium has a calming effect on the muscles and nervous system and may aid restful sleep. • Magnesium works synergistically with calcium, so take these together either as individual supplements or in a combined formula. In addition: -Digestive Enzymes - Digestive enzymes can be taken with any meal or within 30 minutes of your meal. Unless you have serious digestive issues, they don't necessarily need to be taken with light meals or snacks, but can be very beneficial for optimal breakdown and absorption of nutrients when taken with main meals. -Fiber - Fiber supplements may be taken either first thing in the morning or before bed. Be sure to take fiber with a full glass of water and get plenty of water during the day. This product is available under two different labels, but is manufactured by the same company, with the exact same ingredients: Alex Jones' Winter Sun: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075H2QZNS/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=anthonydelell-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B075H2QZNS&linkId=8b7d5a20df236a8e453ab2c29a62df0a Dr. Edward Group's Suntrex D3: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XZHXKJ8/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=anthonydelell-20&camp=1789&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00XZHXKJ8&linkId=0713df53da5a7aabc75131ceedb873a9 Winter Sun™ & Suntrex D3™ is a premium quality vitamin D3 nutritional supplement. It's produced by extracting oil from hearty, nutrient-dense plants known as lichens. Every batch is analyzed to verify purity and D3 content. Lichen sourced D3 is recognized by the Vegan Society as the one form of D3 suitable for vegans. It's completely free of toxins and allergens and contains no yeast, wheat, soy, milk, salt, sugar, preservatives or artificial colors. Simply put, if you want the best, this is it. Winter Sun™ & Suntrex D3™ is the result of our pursuit for the best vegan source of vitamin D3. Although there are many vitamin D supplements on the market, most are vitamin D2, which is inferior to vitamin D3, and very few are truly vegan friendly. In fact, even most "vegetarian" forms of vitamin D are sourced from sheep lanolin. This need prompted our journey to create the most powerful, vegan, vitamin D3 product on the market. We located a vegan source of D3, extracted from lichen, and pioneered research to combine it with USP vegetable glycerin to provide 2000IU of D3 per 10 drops. This research and development took over two years but the result, as verified by independent laboratories like Stirling University, is the best, vegan, vitamin D3 product in the world. --The top 5 reasons you need Winter Sun™ or Suntrex D3™ are... 1. Immune System Support - People with more sunlight exposure have been found to have stronger immune system function than people with limited exposure. Why? Vitamin D3 receptors exist on immune cells and promote healthy immune cell maturity, differentiation and integration. 2. Organ Health - Optimum vitamin D3 blood levels support healthy breasts, colon, kidneys, lungs, stomach, pancreas, bladder, prostate, and uterus. Additionally, adequate vitamin D3 promotes healthy blood vessels and may reduce swelling. 3. Bone Health - Vitamin D supports calcium absorption and research suggests that coupling vitamin D3 supplementation with calcium supplementation promotes bone strength. Furthermore, it helps to minimizes urinary calcium loss. 4. Nervous System Support - Research indicates vitamin D may support healthy nerve conduction potential and neuronal calcium regulation. A 2006 study involving 7 million U.S. military personnel and published in the JANA reported that high circulating blood levels of end-chain vitamin D3, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, were associated with nerve and myelin health. 5. Brain Health - Not only does vitamin D3 promote a healthy mood, but vitamin D receptors are located in the area of the brain responsible for memory and cognition. Some of the health benefits of Suntrex D3™ & Winter Sun™ are... -Promotes calcium absorption for healthy bones and teeth. -Supports the immune system. -Cognitive function and healthy mood. -Muscle strength in older adults. -Adequate vitamin D is necessary for healthy tissue in all systems of the body -including the pancreas, breasts, colon, and prostate. Why is Suntrex D3™ & Winter Sun™ the best vitamin D3 supplement available? -Formulated for easy absorption. -Appropriate for vegetarians and vegans. -Does not contain any toxins, excipients, or magnesium stearate. -GMO-free.

Does ours? 22:05 Why Did It Take 2 Years to Become B Deficient? 23:44 Each B vitamin has an intestinal bacterial source and a food source. 26:02 Wanted: Gut Bugs 31:39 You can fix your own bacteria with vitamin D levels above 40 and take B100 or B50 for 3 months. 32:58 The sodium linked multivitamin transport system pumps 3 vitamins, pantothenic acid, alpha lipoic acid and biotin, into our digestive system and our brain. 36:24 Dr. Gominak sees a correlation between autism and vitamin D deficiency. 38:27 The development of sexual dysmorphism and sleep. 42:34 When a child cannot get out of bed in the morning, this is may be the brain demanding that they go back to sleep to get REM. 44:03 A lack of REM sleep cheats a child of their normal development. 47:15 Children and adults normally make small subtle movements and tiny vocalizations, not talking, walking or falling out of bed. 48:27 Taking the Weston A. Price westernization theory to another level. 56:02 Breastfeeding enlarges nasal passages. 57:28 Dr. Gominak believes that vitamin D is trophic to the bacteria that we are supposed to have in our gut. 59:24 Pantothenic acid not only makes acetylcholine, it makes cortisol. 60:11 Acetylcholine is a chemical used by the vagus nerve. 01:07:46 A test result of pantothenic acid levels will parallel magnesium levels. It tells you what is in the blood, but not what is in the stores. 01:09:10 Perhaps we are completely self-healing with REM sleep. 01:12:26 Dr. Gominak’s Morning Routine 01:13:31 The ketogenic diet helps people to live longer. Being ketogenic during REM sleep helps us repair. We were probably designed to go into ketosis for at least 12 hours every night. 01:15:08 A new theory is that the tricarboxylic acid/CREB cycle, which is used when you are using fats as your energy supply, may have a different purpose. It may not be about making ATP. 0101:19:33 Dr. Gominak’s desert island herb, nutrient or supplement: Her choice is vitamin D, even on a desert island. 01:30:35 Dr. Gominak’s Elevator Pitch: We can impact our children, especially children of color. I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Health Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish Many people have low amounts of iron in their blood. But pregnant women need extra iron for their own health and their baby's health. Iron is important to the development of a baby's brain and central nervous system. In poor countries, however, providing all pregnant women with iron supplements can be a financial issue. Some experts say giving supplements to babies after they are born is enough. Someone who disagrees is Parul Christian, a nutritionist at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health in Maryland. She and other scientists have been doing research in Nepal. She says their latest findings should settle any question about the value of making sure every pregnant woman receives iron supplements. Iron is a micronutrient. Micronutrients are important substances that are found in small amounts in foods. The researchers first completed a study among poor women in Nepal ten years ago. During pregnancy some of the women received supplements containing iron and another micronutrient, folic acid.Ms. Christian says that study showed the supplements could improve child survival. Now the children are older. The researchers returned to Nepal and tested their neurological development. They found improved abilities among those whose mothers had received iron and folic acid during pregnancy and for three months after. Another new study looks at levels of vitamin D in babies. It says newborns with the lowest levels were twice as likely to develop respiratory infections as those with normal levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D helps build strong bones and strengthens the body's defenses against disease. The vitamin is commonly added to cow's milk and also found in supplements. Vitamin D is called the sunshine vitamin. The body naturally produces it from sunlight. Carlos Camargo from Harvard Medical School in Massachusetts and other researchers did the study. It followed more than nine hundred children in New Zealand until they were five years old. Dr. Camargo said the problem of vitamin D deficiency is not limited to countries with the least sun. There are low levels of vitamin D in people living in areas where there is a lot of sun. This is because people are spending more time indoors. For VOA Special English I'm Alex Villarreal. Fights disease Reduces depression Boosts weight lossVitamin D deficiency Food sources How much you need Sunshine vitamin Vitamin D is called the “sunshine vitamin” because it’s produced in your skin in response to sunlight. It’s a fat-soluble vitamin in a family of compounds that includes vitamins D-1, D-2, and D-3. Your body produces vitamin D naturally when it’s directly exposed to sunlight. You can also get it through certain foods and supplements to ensure adequate levels of the vitamin in your blood. Vitamin D has several important functions. Perhaps the most vital are regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, and facilitating normal immune system function. Getting a sufficient amount of vitamin D is important for normal growth and development of bones and teeth, as well as improved resistance against certain diseases. If your body doesn’t get enough vitamin D, you’re at risk of developing bone abnormalities such as soft bones (osteomalacia) or fragile bones (osteoporosis). Here are three more surprising benefits of vitamin D. 1. Vitamin D fights disease In addition to its primary benefits, research suggests that vitamin D may also play a role in: reducing your risk of multiple sclerosis, according to a 2006 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Associationdecreasing your chance of developing heart disease, according to findings published in Circulationhelping to reduce your likelihood of developing the flu, according to 2010 research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2. Vitamin D reduces depression Research has shown that vitamin D might play an important role in regulating mood and warding off depression. In one study, scientists found that people with depression who received vitamin D supplements noticed an improvement in their symptoms. In another study of people with fibromyalgia, researchers found vitamin D deficiency was more common in those who were also experiencing anxiety and depression. 3. Vitamin D boosts weight loss Consider adding vitamin D supplements to your diet if you’re trying to lose weight or prevent heart disease. You can find a great selection of vitamin D supplements In one study, people taking a daily calcium and vitamin D supplement were able to lose more weight than subjects taking a placebo supplement. The scientists said the extra calcium and vitamin D had an appetite-suppressing effect. In another study, overweight people who took a daily vitamin D supplement improved their heart disease risk markers. Beware of D-ficiency Many factors can affect your ability to get sufficient amounts of vitamin D through the sun alone. These factors include: Being in an area with high pollutionUsing sunscreenSpending more time indoorsLiving in big cities where buildings block sunlightHaving darker skin. (The higher the levels of melanin, the less vitamin D the skin can absorb.) These factors contribute to vitamin D deficiency in an increasing number of people. That’s why it’s important to get some of your vitamin D from sources besides sunlight. The symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency in adults include: tiredness, aches and pains, and a general sense of not feeling wellsevere bone or muscle pain or weakness that may cause difficulty climbing stairs or getting up from the floor or a low chair, or cause you to walk with a waddling gaitstress fractures, especially in your legs, pelvis, and hips Doctors can diagnose a vitamin D deficiency by performing a simple blood test. If you have a deficiency, your doctor may order X-rays to check the strength of your bones. If you’re diagnosed with a vitamin D deficiency, your doctor will likely recommend you take daily vitamin D supplements. If you have a severe deficiency, they may instead recommend high-dose vitamin D tablets or liquids. You should also make sure to get vitamin D through sunlight and the foods you eat. Food sources of vitamin D Few foods contain vitamin D naturally. Because of this, some foods are fortified. This means that vitamin D has been added. Foods that contain vitamin D include: salmonsardinesegg yolkshrimpmilk (fortified)cereal (fortified)yogurt (fortified)orange juice (fortified) It can be hard to get enough vitamin D each day through sun exposure and food alone, so taking vitamin D supplements can help. How much do you need? There has been some controversy over the amount of vitamin D needed for healthy functioning. Recent research indicates that you need more vitamin D than was once thought. Normal blood serum levels range from 50 to 100 micrograms per deciliter. Depending on your blood level, you may need more vitamin D. Dr. Venkata seshaiah Watch And Subscribe To The Channel. with Dr. Cedric Garland of UCSD Moores Cancer Center Topic: Vitamin D Research Controversy By: Dr. Cedric Garland Event date: 02/04/14 Here is a short text by Dr. Cedric Garland about the Autier paper, Vitamin D status and ill health: a systematic review. "This meta-analysis is nothing new and is already obsolete, since it is mainly based on old papers that used too little vitamin D to expect any effect. A New Zealand study saying we should only supplement people with vitamin D deficiency and evidence of bone loss is equally wrong. Virtually everyone in New Zealand, and most adults in the US, are vitamin D deficient by modern criteria, being below 32 ng/ml. The reality is that we now know that they are deficient with regard to extraskeletal effects of 25(OH)D if their serum level is below 40 ng/ml. These papers should be disregarded as obsolete work. We are moving into a new era of using vitamin D3 in doses no less that 4,000 IU/day for people aged 9 years and older (The NAS-IOM total upper level intakes [TULI's] that are safe for daily use per NAS-IOM monograph, 2011). Studies using less than 4000 IU/day are on the verge of obsolescence. It does not matter much that giving 400 IU/d in the meta-analysis being cited did not achieve very much -- the amount given to the subjects was less than a tenth the effective dose. The authors of this review did not use any epidemiological research and they appear to have paid no attention in their conclusions to the only RCT that was relevant, that of Lappe et al. in 2007. Lapper et al. used 1100 IU/day of vitamin D3 and 1500 mg/day of calcium. They achieved a serum level of approximately 40 ng/ml. It reported a 77% reduction in incidence of all invasive cancer combined, after a 1-year run-in period. The benefit was 60% less cancer without a run-in period. These cancers included breast, colon, lung and others. The women in the Lappe et al. RCT were very compliant. The result was statistically significant. The Lappe et al, study and the many supportive epidemiological studies that preceded and followed it should prove to even the most ill-informed skeptic that vitamin D prevents most cancer. It is incredible that the authors of this review virtually disregarded all of the relevant epidemiology this randomized controlled clinical trial. Several scientists have informed the editors of the journal, that published the review, presenting their objections to the conclusions this study reached, they were based on obsolete low-dose vitamin D studies, and that they virtually totally neglected the work of the entire science of epidemiology. Doctors and their patients should not be discouraged by this obsolete review. Patients aged 9 years and older can take 4,000 IU/day of vitamin D3 safely according to the National Academy of Sciences-Institute of Medicine (2011 monograph). The benefits of such a dose will be substantial. The scientific data already accumulated is easily strong enough to support this. Serum 25(OH)D should be monitored regularly in any event, and serum calcium in older adults or anyone where there is a concern about hypercalcemia. It is true that the current NAS-IOM RDA is 600-800 IU/day of vitamin D3, but higher doses seem far more logical and safer now for most people based on studies and the Lappe et al RCT of 1100 IU/day of vitamin D3. Sale and intake of vitamin D2 should end, as there is no solid support for its efficacy against non-skeletal diseases, unlike vitamin D3. Another supporting clinical trial would be good, but we have a great one in Lappe et al. If we ever decide to do another RCT we should use no less than 4000 IU/d of vitamin D3 and 1000-1250 mg/day of calcium. Such a trial may be impossible, though, because members of the placebo group may eventually take supplements on their own, or human subjects protection committees may not allow depriving anyone of vitamin D at these doses in this emerging era of knowledge about their powerful benefits at appropriate, monitored doses in preventing very serious diseases that we have never before been able to effectively prevent, including breast cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, type 1 diabetes, and much of multiple sclerosis and type 2 diabetes. It is an exciting time for using vitamin D at no less than 4000 IU/day with regular serum 25(OH)D monitoring to prevent these fatal diseases. This is not astonishing news, as vitamin D is relatively uncommon in food; non-diabetics are also urged to increase vitamin D intake. Safe vitamins for diabetics are considered those taken in very small doses; the amounts should not exceed 150 percent of the recommended daily allowance. Further, supplements containing iron should be avoided by men and post-menopausal women.
