Beth is 2.5 years-old, has eaten a vegan diet since she started solids at 6.5 months-old. She was breastfed until she weaned at 26 months-old. Her mum has been vegan for 3.5 years. She supplements with vitamin b12 twice a week with a sublingual b12 powder. Beth's meals: Breakfast: Her smoothie contained fresh kale, frozen bananas, beetroot, blueberries, frozen mixed berries (raspberries, blackberries and strawberries), chia seeds, flaxseeds, spirulina (Hawaiian), trace mineral drops, acerola berry powder (vitamin c), a tiny bit of coconut cream, kiwifruit and feijoas (from our garden). They may resist it, refuse it or spit it up once you get it into them. Here are some tips to make things easier. Babies are more likely to take their medicine when they're hungry, so give it to them before you feed them. They're also less likely to spit it up that way. We recommend, unless you have to, you don't mix medicine with food or drinks. Mixing it makes it harder to know if the full dose has been taken. If that's the only way your child will take the medicine, check with your pharmacist first, because certain foods, like yoghurt or applesauce, can stop the medication from working and others, like honey or syrup, work only if your child is not on a restricted diet. If you do use food or drink, use a very small amount, like this, so that the child will finish it all. Now, let's go over how to prepare the medicine. First, measure the dose with the spoon or syringe you got from the pharmacy. Now give the medicine to your child in small amounts and watch for them to swallow before you give them more. If you're using a syringe, try putting the medicine inside their cheek pouch. That will prevent them from gagging. If you're still having trouble, try giving your baby a popsicle or a freezie before giving them medicine. The sweet taste, and slight numbing sensation will "help the medicine go down". When giving medicine to any child, it's important that you double check the amount and the dose with the instructions that are written on the bottle. If you use a log or a medicine diary, that can help to prevent either giving too many doses, or missing some doses. If your child still can't swallow the medicine or keep it down, or if they're showing any side effects, get in touch with your doctor or pharmacist. Some oral medicines can be made to be given in other ways. Talk with your pharmacist about this to see if it's possible. - Give medicine according to instructions (Remember to give medicine to your child according to the instructions.) - Check about mixing foods or other medicines (Ask your pharmacist about foods or other medicines that may stop it from working properly.) - Check dosing amounts (If you have any concerns about the amount of medicine, or if your child is refusing to take it, speak with your pharmacist.) It’s probably been a while. That’s too bad because the best research tells us that obedient children are happy children. And, from my experience as a family psychologist, the parents of obedient children are happy parents. Since all parents want their children to be happy, the question becomes: How does one get a child to obey? Is there some trick to it? Well, there are certainly are a lot of parents who think so. They believe that proper discipline is a matter of using the right methods, techniques, and strategies: what I call consequence delivery systems. Parents have been using these behavior-modification-based methods since they became popular in the 1960s – seemingly to no avail. Would anyone argue that today’s kids are more obedient than kids were several generations ago? I don’t think so. The reason these methods and techniques don’t work is that proper discipline is not a matter of proper methods. It’s a matter of a proper attitude on the part of the parent. Let me illustrate the point. Let’s say that for a week I observe the classroom of a grade school teacher who has the reputation of being the best disciplinarian in her district. She consistently has fewer behavior problems than any of her colleagues. What is she doing? She’s making her expectations perfectly clear. Which means, first, she communicates in simple, declarative sentences. She doesn’t use fifty words when she could use ten. The more words you use to communicate your expectations, the less confident you sound. Second, she prefaces her instructions to her students with authoritative phrases like “I want you to…” and “It’s time for you to…” She says, “It’s time for you to take out your math books and turn to page 25” as opposed to “Let’s take out our math books and turn to page 25. Okay?” Third, this teacher does not explain the motives behind her instructions to her students. Why? Because she knows that explanations invite arguments. Whenever parents tell me they’re dealing with an argumentative child I know that these well-intentioned people are explaining themselves. They tell their child why they want him to pick up his toys, for example. And he argues, because you can always pick apart an explanation. If you don’t explain yourself when you give an instruction to a child, then the child, being a child, is almost surely going to ask for one. He’s going to ask Why? or Why not? It sounds like you have a very picky two-year-old who really doesn't like to eat his vegetables and doesn't like to eat dinner either. This is very normal behavior and a lot of kids get stuck on certain foods that they like and it takes a while for them to grow out of that and be open to trying new foods. It's really important to offer nutritious food at each meal of the day and research has shown that kids sometimes need to be introduced a food 10-15 times, sometimes even more before they'll actually try it. It took me actually three years to get my daughter to try chicken nuggets. Chicken nuggets in some people's mind aren't the most healthy thing but it was a source of protein because she wouldn't eat any meat. Then once she tried it she was like, "Wow these are good." You just keep saying to your kids, "I tried to tell you." Getting them to eat it is the hard part. There are a few things you might be able to try if you haven't already that would increase his likelihood of trying food, get kids involve in the kitchen. Take him shopping with you. Talk about colors and make it exciting. Maybe let him pick a vegetable that he'd like to go home and try, or a fruit. Involve him in the cooking. Make mealtime a fun time. Try to avoid making it a source of contention because kids will associate those feelings with food and it may make them not want to eat even more. If there is something your child likes, for example, say he really likes peanut butter, you could try putting peanut butter on apples or other healthy things like celery and put little raisins on it. We've all seen that, like bugs, boys might think that's kind of cool. Introducing foods in different ways might make it exciting and fun for him to eat. Say for example he won't drink milk but if he likes yogurt he is still getting the benefits from dairy products that way. There might be things you can switch out to make sure he gets the nutrition he needs. If you suspect that he is very underweight and you're worried about his growth it would be best to take him to the doctor and the doctor can decide if supplementation, vitamins, or even other resources such as a dietician are necessary to get your son to start gaining weight. Today starts a 3-part series of "I Care About My Childs Health". I know that should be a total given. But this is why I'm starting this series and I'm gonna tell you a really really quick story. I was working with a client and things went really really well and she just had a really quick like 8-week coaching program just trying to get her on and get often and flying solo. And to know it came to that point she was doing really really well and I'm really happy to let her go because things were going good, she is losing weight and she has gotten the habit. She got it all down. And you know I am a Facebook friend with her and she better watch out that Facebook because she gets into trouble. And she posted something and it really broke my heart . She was talking about how she was really proud of herself because her husband and her kids went in to 7-Eleven and they got hotdogs, candies and slurpees and she's really proud of herself that she didn't. And it totally broke my heart and I was really really upset when I read that. And don't get me wrong. I understand. A trip to 7-Eleven and a slurpee and a hotdog once in a blue moon isn't gonna hurt you one. I'm totally cool with that. But I had a sense that it happened more often that it should. But what is not okay for you to ingested but its okay to ingest it. It just doesn't make any sense me. If you don't want to put it into your body then why do you let your kids put in into their bodies? Because this is the truth. Your children- your child is going to suffer with their health more than you and I combine. And your kids need this guidance and they need it because they're going to have any single junk food company. They're going to knock on the door and TV at anywhere you can think of. They're gonna be bombarding them with sugar and junk food. So if you truly care about your child's health you will stick with it just like your taste buds can change, their taste buds can change. Yes it takes consistency. Yes it does takes work. Yes you're gonna pull your hair sometimes trying to make them eat vegetables, but they'll come around, it will happen. I promise it will happen. And when you do that, and when you instill those habits with them as children, they'll gonna be more likely to have better self-esteem; to not get bullied or make fun of by others; to not have to worry about cancer, illness, disease and diabetes. You are saving them so much heartache. You can trick them into eating fresh vegetables and they won't even know it. So I'm going to put a couple of books and articles below this video so you can start researching those. But one that is just comes to mind is like a smoothie. You can easily throw some spinach and kale into a smoothie and of course put some berries in to kinda mask the green because you know kids don't like the green color of eating anything. So you can throw in some berries. Wham! They're gonna be starving a leafy green that so much of what they need. So there's a lot of cool tricks here. And if you have any, I want to hear from you. The American academy and pediatrics dose recommend that all breast feed babies receive a vitamin D supplement because human milk dose not contain enough vitamin D and a vitamin D deficiency can lead to certain diseases or health conditions one of which is rickets and our bodies naturally synthesize vitamin D by getting sun exposure but obviously we are not taking our babies out and exposing them to the sun they should wear sun screen and for the first few months of life be protected from the sun. So its very important to give this vitamin supplement. Now you noticed that your little one doesn't like it and they seem to be aware more alert after they've gotten it and his could just be the taste, its not a stimulant of any kind, its not something that would actually keep your baby up but just the taste alone would wake your baby wake up and not necessary your feel comfortable. So because its important you need to always weigh out the risk and benefits of different things. There is a few things you could try for example give it when your baby is going to be up and alert not when your baby is trying to go to sleep and also wash it down with a nursing session afterwards or with a bottle and you also could if you wanted to put a couple of drops into pumped breast milk and feed it to your baby in a bottle if you are bottle feeding your baby at times.
