Actinic keratosis, also called "solar keratosis" and "senile keratosis", is a pre-cancerous patch of thick, scaly, or crusty skin. These growths are more common in fair-skinned people, and those who are frequently in the sun. Actinic keratosis is considered to be potentially pre-cancerous. If it is left untreated, it may turn into a type of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma, also known as bazalioma, or basal cell cancer, is the most common skin cancer, and one of the most common cancers in the United States. While Basal cell carcinoma has a very low metastatic risk, this tumor can cause significant disfigurement by invading surrounding tissues. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is a common form of skin cancer that develops in the squamous cells, that make up the middle and outer layer of the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is usually not life-threatening, though it can be aggressive in some cases. Untreated, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin can grow large, or spread to other parts of your body, causing serious complications. Melanoma, also known as malignant melanoma, is a type of cancer that develops from the pigment-containing cells. Melanomas typically occur in the skin, but may rarely occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye. Sometimes they develop from moles with concerning changes, including an increase in size, irregular edges, change in color, itchiness, or skin breakdown. Although symptoms may vary, new or unusual growths, or changes in already existing moles, can be signs of skin cancer. This video also contains images of skin cancer (melanoma) versus images of normal moles. Unfortunately, conventional doctors don't tell you the TRUTH, about skin cancer. DVA skin cancer management There are many types of skin cancers including BCCs or basal cell cancers, SCC or squamous cell cancers as well as melanomas. Todays review is on Bowen disease or Intraepidermal Squamous Cell Carcinoma. This is a common non-invasive cancer of the skin affecting the epidermal layers of skin. IECs most frequently occur on sun-exposed areas and present as red, scaly and persistent patches. IECs may arise de-novo, or from lesions of solar keratosis. If left untreated, Bowen disease may progress to an invasive Squamous Cell Carcinoma. This is one of the most common skin cancers I see in DVA or Department of Defence patients in Australia, and is due to the high UV radiation we have in cities like Brisbane. Clinical Features Bowen disease most frequently presents as a persistent red scaly patch that slow grows over time. The most commonly affect areas include the legs, arms, and face- areas of sun exposure. Bowen disease or IECs can also affect the lips, oral mucosa, or even genital areas. As Bowen Disease is asymptomatic there is often a delay in the diagnosis, as it may mimic conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis, tinea, and sun-spots. Associations Most cases of Bowen disease arise from sun-damaged skin, including areas of actinic keratosis. The most common associations include- UV radiation. This plays a major contributing factor in the development of IECs. Immunosuppression. Patients on certain immunosuppressive medications are more likely to develop IECs. Arsenic exposure. This was a common cause of Bowen Disease in the past, as arsenic was frequently used in medicines during the 60s and 70s including Bells Asthma Mixture, sheep dip, and as pesticides. Arsenic induced IECs-Bowen disease is a rare event today, as occupational safety has increased. A time lag of 10-20 years is seen between exposure and cancer. Human Papilloma virus infections. Other associations include genetic diseases, radiotherapy and skin lesions such as porokeratosis, and solar keratosis. Investigations Bowen’s Disease can be suspected clinically, however in the majority of cases, a biopsy should be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment There are multiple ways to manage Bowens/IECs. Treatment modalities will depend on the location and size of the cancer, the number of lesions, the degree of functional impairment. Each modality has both advantages and disadvantages. Cryotherapy or liquid nitrogen Liquid nitrogen can be an excellent method of treating IECs. Most cases will require a double –freeze cycle of cryotherapy. This treatment is not recommended for IECs below the knee, as poor healing may occur. Creams Imiquimod, or 5-fluorouracil are effective in the treatment of Bowen disease. Clinical studies have shown cure rates approaching 80-90%. Treatment appears to be most successful when these creams are applied for 6-16 weeks. Curettage and Electrocautery When small patches of IECs are present they may be treated via curettage and cautery. A local anaesthetic is given prior to the procedure to prevent pain and discomfort. Photodynamic therapy Photodynamic therapy or PDT can be an excellent non-surgical method of treating skin cancers such as Bowen’s/ IEC’s. PDT uses a photosensitive cream called 5-aminolevulinic acid or methyl aminolevulinate, that is applied to the skin cancer. The cancerous cells of Bowens/ IEC take up this chemical over a period of 3 hours. A low-level laser light then activates the chemical, and destroys the skin cancer cells. Patients will require two treatments spaced a week or two apart. DVA or the Department of Veteran Affairs in Brisbane, covers PDT for both sunspots on the face and also IECs on all areas. PDT can also be used for multiple or large IECs. The benefit of PDT is that it selectively targets neoplastic cells without affecting the surrounding epidermis. This results in improved cosmetic outcomes, and faster healing times. Surgery Surgery is the ideal method of treating IECs in certain areas including recurrent IEC or ones that dwell in hair follicles. Surgery has the highest cure rate for Bowens/ IECs. For the majority of patients, especially DVA patients in Australia, non surgical methods, including the use of photodynamic therapy, is the future. Dr Davin Lim, Dermatologist. Brisbane Australia. Watch more How to Prevent Skin Cancer videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/507188-Can-a-Skin-Tag-Be-Cancerous-Skin-Cancer What is a skin tag, and does it ever mean it's cancerous? This is a difficult question to answer, as people perceive different growths as skin tags. Traditionally, skin tags happen in the armpits and around the neck. They're benign growths of the skin that are absolutely skin-colored. They don't have any color to them. However I often get questions from patients, to examine certain growths on the face, around the eyelids as skin tags. These are not skin tags, but they're oftentimes warts or other types of growths like seborrhea keratosis or DPN's, dermatosis papulosa nigra. These are benign growths that can have color to them, like black and brown, and oftentimes can cause some concern to the patient, as it may look suspicious like a melanoma. DPN's and seborrhea keratosis are benign growths that are not skin cancers. They can be treated cosmetically, but they do not require any treatment.

When you think of warts, they probably conjure images of growths on your fingers and toes. But you can also get warts on your face. So in this episode of DermTV, Dr. Schultz discusses facial warts and how to treat facial warts. Subscribe to DermTV: http://www.youtube.com/dermtvdotcom http://DermTV.com Connect with DermTV: http://www.facebook.com/dermtv http://www.twitter.com/dermtv [TRANSCRIPT] In other episodes about warts, I've shared with you that treating warts is very difficult and frustrating. In response to my saying that the most common locations for warts are the fingers, feet and genitals, a viewer with many facial warts asked if facial warts play by the same rules and if they're treated the same way. Today, I'll discuss this topic... Most facial warts are flat warts which tend to be very small... less than 2 mm... not like regular raised ones which are often 4 to 10 mm in width. In reality, flat warts aren't really flat, but they're so minimally raised that they look flat. And unlike regular warts, they have a fairly smooth surface. That same smooth surface makes them even more resistant to topical medical treatment because there's less surface area for the active ingredients in creams to be absorbed than with regular warts. We use the same ingredients in creams for flat facial warts as regular ones. Since they work by causing a little irritation, which causes an immunological reaction, which finally fights the warts, and since facial skin is more sensitive than finger and foot skin, for facial warts you need to use even lower strengths, which of course can be less effective. As a result of lower strengths and less absorption, topical treatments often fail. But the good news is that flat warts don't have roots or tentacles that are usually responsible for both the recurrence of regular warts removed surgically and also for the scars from successful wart removal since you don't have to go as deep. As a matter of fact, flat warts tend to literally sit on top of the skin so only rarely are there scars from removal or recurrences after removal. I usually try topical therapy before surgical removal. For topicals we use exfoliants like retinoids, salicylic and glycolic acid, as well as special ingredients called immunomodulators to directly try to boost local immunity. When topicals fail, surgically I use a curved knife called a curette to literally peel or scrape the warts off, with or without local anesthesia depending on the number of warts and their size. Usually healing takes a week, but pinkness can last a month or two, easily covered by makeup in women. Another problem with treating flat facial warts is that by the time you realize you have them, because they are so hard to see, you've usually spread them and have many more. Women spread them with makeup and skincare products. Men spread them with their razor. And everyone spreads them by touching and rubbing. So facial flat warts, just like regular warts, are really tough to treat, and are just one more reason we say that warts have done more to ruin the reputation of dermatologists than almost any other disease. I removed a suspicious multicolor (Possible ?) skin cancer spot on my leg with Bloodroot Black Salve. I got a little scared when it looked infected, but once you start a project like this there is no turning back. Here is my 6 week experience, if you want to be super safe you really need a Doctor to supervise this stuff. You need to respect it, because it is super powerful and never do too big of a spot at once, the body is under stress even removing a small spot. The bigger the spot the more stress on the body and if you have a weak heart, it can be fatal, if the infection enters the bloodstream, maybe even for the healthy ? Moderation in everything !

http://www.dermaidfoundation.org Help support DermAid. Donate Now! In this tutorial, Kevin St. Clair, M.D., discusses managementseborrheic keratosis. Please visit our site for more information about other dermatological conditions. Key Points *Condition consists of common harmless skin lesions that appear during adult life. *Lesions are slightly raised, skin colored or light brown spots that thicken, darken and become wart-like. *Cause is unknown, thought to be a part of the general aging process. *There are many variants Seborrhoeic or Seborrheic keratoses are very common harmless skin lesions that appear during adult life. Seborrheic keratoses may also be called basal cell papillomas, senile warts, brown warts, age spots, or wisdom spots . Seborrheic keratoses are harmless and rarely or never become malignant. They begin as slightly raised, skin colored or light brown spots. Gradually they thicken and take on a rough, warty surface. They slowly darken and may turn black. These color changes are harmless but may result in the lesion looking like a Melanoma. They appear to stick on to the skin like barnacles. Seborrhoeic keratoses appear on both covered and uncovered parts of the body. There may be one or many of them. The cause of Seborrheic keratoses is not known. The name is misleading, because they are not limited to a seborrheic distribution (scalp, mid-face, chest, upper back) as in Seborrheic dermatitis, nor are they formed from sebaceous glands as is the case with Sebaceous hyperplasia. Seborrheic keratoses are considered as part of the skin aging process. As time goes by, Seborrheic keratoses become more numerous. Some people inherit a tendency to develop a very large number of them. They are not generally caused by exposure to the sun, although they can follow sunburn or other irritating skin conditions including dermatitis. Skin Cancers are sometimes difficult to tell apart from Seborrheic keratoses, so if you are concerned or unsure about any skin lesion consult your doctor. Very rarely, eruptive seborrhoeic keratoses may denote an underlying internal malignancy. The syndrome is known as the sign of Leser-Trelat. Variants of Seborrheic keratoses include maular (flat) seborrheic keratose, stucco keratoses (numerous small dry grey stuck-on lesions usually found on lower legs and feet), Dermatosis papulosa nigra (numerous brown warty bumps on face, neck and chests of dark-skinned people), irritated seborrhoeic keratosis (inflamed lesion, often red and crusted), and Lichenoid keratosis (often pink or grey colored). Differential Diagnosis (Other conditions with similar appearance) Acrochordon Arsenical Keratosis Basal cell carcinoma Bowen Disease Warts Melanoma Squamous cell carcinoma Diagnosis Key Points *Diagnosis is typically done through clinical inspection and, sometimes, Skin biopsy Diagnosis is usually easily made by physical examination. When there is uncertainty about the growth a Skin biopsy may be done to rule out other diagnoses. Treatment Key Points *Treatment is not necessary as Seborrheic keratoses are harmless. *Seborrheic keratoses can be easily removed through cryotherapy, curettage & cautery, laser surgery, and shave biopsy. Seborrheic keratoses can easily be removed but may leave a small scar. The usual reason for removing a seborrheic keratosis is cosmetic or it may Itch or rub against your clothes. Occasionally your doctor may recommend its removal because of uncertainty of the correct diagnosis. Methods used to remove Seborrhoeic keratoses include cryotherapy, curettage & cautery, laser surgery, and shave biopsy.

Mohs Micrographic Skin Cancer Surgery is a specialized technique, designed to remove skin cancers, most commonly basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, removing as little normal tissue as possible with the lowest rate of reoccurrence. We most commonly use this technique on the face, since we want to remove as little normal tissue as possible, so that the resulting scar will potentially be small as possible. In Part I, I show how I take Mohs layers, removing skin cancer and actually looking at the tissue and checking all the edges for any skin cancer under the microscope, while the patient waits. When I determine that the margins of the tissue are free of skin cancer, then I can repair the defect. Part 2 shows me repairing the defect created on the right side of my patient's nose, using an advancement flap. Thank you for watching!! At some point of life, we all can have certain skin issues, like moles, skin tags, clogged pores or skin breakouts. They are all caused by some hormonal imbalance or changes in your lifestyle. Undoubtedly, there are numerous different skin and beauty care products which are intended to solve these issues and make your skin clear and glowing. However, only a few of them are really effective. Therefore, in order to avoid harmful chemicals and use natural products, you should do some simple and easy natural homemade remedies that can provide fantastic results. They can improve the appearance of your skin and get rid of all skin issues. In order to have a healthy and clear skin, you should try the following excellent natural remedies for common skin problems: 1. Moles Moles affect people of all ages, including children. They are defined as clusters of skin pigmentation cells, known as melanocytes. Genetics and sun exposure are the major causes of moles. Natural Remedies for Moles Garlic: Both garlic and garlic extract are very effective in removing moles. Put a masking tape or petroleum jelly around the mole before applying garlic or garlic extract in order to protect the skin. When done with the application, secure with a bandage and leave it on for 4 hours. Repeat the procedure on a daily basis. Castor Oil and Baking Soda: Combine the castor oil with baking soda to create a paste. Apply the paste onto the mole, cover with a bandage, and leave it on during the night. Remove the bandage and rinse the area well in the morning. Repeat the treatment every night. Apple Cider Vinegar: Soak a cotton ball in ACV and apply directly onto the mall. Secure the area with a medical tape or bandage and leave it on for 8 hours. Amazingly, the mole will fall off on its own. 2. Warts Warts are caused by the human papilloma virus or HPV, and are manifested by small bumps on the skin or mucous membranes. Warts are usually treated with salicylic acid or freezing. Resolve them by using Bananas You need to rub the wart every night with a banana peel. Repeat the procedure for two weeks and the wart will disappear. Resolve them by using Pure Raw Honey Rub honey on the wart at night and wrap it with a bandage. In this way, you will successfully remove it. Resolve them by using Apple Cider Vinegar Soak a cotton ball with apple cider vinegar and secure it with a bandage. Leave it thus overnight, or for 24 hours. Then, replace it with a new one. The wart will slowly shrivel up and vanish. Resolve them by using Garlic If you use crushed garlic or garlic juice, you can remove a wart in two weeks. Every night, rub crushed garlic on the wart and put a bandage over it. Apply garlic juice to the wart two times a day. 3. Skin Tags These are skin growths that stick out from the skin surface, and usually appear around the neck, upper chest, underarms and eyelids. They usually appear as a result of skin rubbing against skin. They are commonly eliminated by tying off, cutting off, and freezing. Resolve them by using Apple Cider Vinegar Soak a cotton ball in apple cider vinegar and squeeze it to remove any excess. Dab the skin tag with the apple cider vinegar, and leave it on the place for as long as you want. In several days, the skin tag will darken and fall off by itself.

http://tinyurl.com/RemoveMolesWarts Warts, Moles and Skin Tags - Can They Develop Into Cancer? Skin tags pose no real danger. They will not develop into a cancerous growth. However sometimes they may be irritating especially if they are found around the collar. You may even decide to remove a skin tag for cosmetic reasons. When one considers warts, particular precautions needs to be taken in the case of genital warts, since these may be transmitted to others. Moreover sometimes genital warts may develop into a cancerous growth. Therefore if you have genital warts you should consult your physician right away. Moles may develop into a cancerous growth. It is therefore important to take appropriate care of any changes that can occur to any mole. If you have many moles on you body it is not a bad idea to have regular checks. Take particular care during the summer because the sun rays may make a mole develop into melanoma or cancer of the skin. Consider any changes that you notice to any of your moles. Specifically you must consult your physician if a mole changes it's: • Shape • Size • Elevation • Color You must also consult your physician if your mole starts to itch or the nearby skin starts to irritate you or to discolor. Also, certain moles have more probability of developing into a cancer than others. Asymmetric moles are at a more elevated risk of developing into a cancer. The same also applies to irregular moles. Further more moles with a variation of tones have also an increased risk of developing into a cancerous growth. LASERS FOR AGE WARTS AND PIGMENTATION In this video, Dr Davin Lim uses 2 instruments to treat seb warts or senile warts- a common curette and an erbium laser. Other lasers such as CO2 fully ablative can also help peel away age warts. For flat warts and sun spots, Q switch lasers, including Picosecond lasers such as Picosure, and Picoway can be effective. How common are age warts and age spots? Seborrhoeic keratoses aråe extremely common. It has been estimated that over 90% of adults over the age of 60 years have one or more of them. They occur in males and females of all races, typically beginning to erupt in the 30s or 40s. These warts can occur on any area – including the face, neck, trunk and limbs. Facial age warts usually åsåtart off as small, flat lesions. Over time these grow to form ‘warty growths’ that maybe several inches in width. Age warts are harmless, however in Australia, up to 5% of these warts can contain a very superficial skin cancer know as Bowen’s disease or IEC. This is more common on facial warts and can be treated with either erbium, or CO2 laser. What causes seborrhoeic keratoses or age warts? The precise cause of seborrhoeic keratoses- age spots is not known. As we age, seborrhoeic keratoses become more numerous. Some people inherit a tendency to develop a very large number of them. Researchers have noted: Eruptive seborrhoeic keratoses – age spots can follow sunburn or dermatitis. Skin friction may be the reason they appear in body folds. In some cases they maybe secondary to a viral infection Many patients will have a family history of age warts What are other treatment methods for age warts and seb keratosis? An individual seborrhoeic keratosis can easily be removed if desired. Reasons for removal may be that it is unsightly, itchy, or catches on clothing. Methods used to remove seborrhoeic keratoses include: Cryotherapy for thinner lesions Curettage and/or electrocautery Ablative laser surgery with an erbium or CO2 laser Shave biopsy with a blade Focal chemical peel with trichloracetic acid or TCA 30-50%. I prefer using combination methods as this gives the best results. Thanks for watching, and remember to subscribe for more information – one video every week, Saturday morning, Brisbane time. Which types of skin blemishes, moles, marks, can you use black salve on? My answer is 'any'. Black salve will only react to 'infected' or 'cancer-like', 'melanoma-like' skin tissue. http://www.onlinedermclinic.com In this tutorial, Chris Schach M.D., discusses the etiology and diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. Squamous cell is the second most common skin cancer in the U.S.. Learn the warning signs of this common skin cancer. Watch our tutorials, given by U.S. Board Certified dermatologists, at Onlinedermclinic.com. Key Points *Common skin cancer, forming in the cells of the outer skin layer *Most cases caused by sun exposure, but may be the result of other factors *Consists of scaly, crusted lesions which are tender and slow-growing and may ulcerate Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a common skin cancer, which forms in the squamous cells, which make up the outer layer of skin. The condition typically presents in areas exposed to sun, such as the face, lips, ears hands, arms, and lower legs, though it may develop in other areas. It sometimes develops on mucosal surfaces such as the genitals or mouth. SCC in situ is confined to the epidermis, the outer skin layer. SCCs which are invasive spread to deeper skin layers. The condition typically presents as a scaly, crusted lump or bump, which is tender and slow growing. The lesion may develop sores and ulcerate. Lesions may be any size, from very small, to centimeters in diameter. In a small percentage of cases, SCCs may metastasize, most often when located on the lip, ear, back of hand, or scalp. SCC is most often caused by an accumulation of sun exposure. Other factors which may increase the likelihood of developing the condition include family history, smoking, burns, persistent ulcers, long-term use of immunosuppressants, and infection with certain strains of human papillomavirus (which causes most genital SCCs). Any person previously treated for the condition is at increased risk as well. Anyone may be affected by the condition but those with the fairest skin are at greatest risk. Differential Diagnosis (Other conditions with similar appearance) Bowen's disease Cutaneous horn Actinic keratosis Keratoacanthoma Wart Blastomycosis Chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis Basal cell carcinoma Melanoma Diagnosis Key Points *Diagnosis based on appearance of the affected area *Skin biopsy will be performed to confirm diagnosis and rule out other conditions *Invasive SCCs may require imaging tests to determine the extent of involvement SCC is typically diagnosed based on the appearance of the lesion. A biopsy of the lesion will confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions. In the case of invasive SCCs, imaging tests may be performed to determine the extent of lesion involvement. Treatment *Treatment predicated on lesion location, size, and number *Goal of treatment is removal of the lesion and destruction of cancer cells *Preventative measures include skin protection and skin examination *SCCs may recur on the removal site Treatment of SCC is predicated on lesion location, size, and histopathology. SCC is typically treated by surgical removal of the lesion by electrodessication and curettage (scraping away the cancer and cauterizing the base) or surgical excision. In some lesions, Moh's micrographic surgery may be recommended. Indications for Moh's surgery incude: lesions that are larger than 2cm, show aggressive histopathology, or are recurrent cancers. In high risk SCCs showing perineural invasion or in cases which have metastasized, radiotherapy (radiation treatment) is used in addition to surgery.

Today I would like to share a story of about my incredible journey concerning cancer growth on my Face. About Twelve years ago, in 2002, I went to my Doctors concerned about a spot on my face. A biopsy results showed a benign skin cancer, Melanoma Maligna Lentigo. Four years later I noticed a red patch growing increasing larger in size every month. A further Biopsy showed the same result and I was told not to worry, that it was still benign. Six years later in 2012 the affected area increased further in size enormously.

Do you know the symptoms of Skin Cancer? Find out now what to watch for! CLICK HERE: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00C02KLMI Hi! This is Terry. I'm setting at work one day about noon and the doctor called me. She said, "Remember that wart we took off from behind your ear about ten days ago?" She said, "I'm shocked, but it's cancerous and you've got to have a Pet scan tomorrow and you're going to lose the hearing in that ear, and they're wanting to take that ear completely off. And they're wanting to take all your lymph nodes out from your ear down to your waist; you're going to have to have major surgery to take care of this; you gotta start moving and you've gotta start moving right now!" She was in a tizzy and she threw me into a tizzy all on the phone at work at noon one day! I had had this little bitty thing behind my ear removed and she said as she took it off, "Oh, it's just a wart; it's nothing to be concerned about!" But that little wart turned out to be melanoma, the deadliest of skin cancers. There are some signs, some symptoms, skin cancer symptoms that you ought to be aware of. Normally, if they are perfectly round, it's not such a big deal, but when they become irregular in shape, or if they begin to change color, then you'd better have them checked out, and have them checked out soon. In my case, mine had started itching; I didn't realize it, but itching is another skin cancer symptom. If you start itching, you'd better have it checked out. And then mine was ulcerated, it had just started a week or two before the surgery leaking some sort of fluid and that is another skin cancer symptom. If yours is ulcerated, you'd better have it checked out! I'm a firm believer that you can't wait on this stuff. Melanoma may be a small looking thing, but it's deadly. If I had waited a little while longer and that thing had gotten into the lymph nodes, those cancer cells can move into the lymph nodes and from there they can move to the vital organs of the body and there's not a whole lot that can be done at that point. I'm telling you, I'm on a mission to try to help some people. I didn't know how to talk to doctors, I didn't know how to ask questions, I didn't know how to answer questions, I didn't know what in the world was going on. I saw several doctors and had several different opinions and I had to learn real quickly that I had to make my decisions based on what I was getting from the different doctors and their different opinions. I was on a bad roller coaster ride; I was in a dark place for several weeks, and if I can help somebody not to have to go to that dark place, then this is all worth while. I had to learn that doctors are coming from a different point of view and I had to take it all into consideration. I had to understand their mindset. I have put it all into a book, and you can read all the details there. My entire story. My outcome is not bad, they did go back and do surgery, they wanted to remove my ear, but we reached a compromise, I managed to save my ear; I still have it. They replaced half of it with skin from down on my neck and that's another story. I am so grateful that they got it all. There was a little bit left, so it's a good thing that they went back and took out the rest of it or there would still be more problems. I'm on a mission; the next five years are going to be something else. They are going to monitor me about every three months. I went to a dermatologist a couple of weeks ago and they took off five little things from off my body and all five of them came back clean; so, there's the first hurdle. I'm here to tell you it's serious business. I've written a book called "Fears, Tears and Ears." You need to check out my book. It's a Kindle book, but you don't have to have a Kindle to read a Kindle book. You can download a free app from Amazon and you can read it on your desk top computer, or you can read it on your smart phone, but you need to read it. There's a link below this video that will direct you to the right spot. I just want so badly to help somebody not to have to fact these fears alone, and not to have to face all these emotions and not know what to expect. If I can help just one person, then it's all worth while. Skin cancer symptoms are easy to spot if you know what to look for. If you are carrying around something that you are even concerned about a little bit, I'm encouraging you today to go get it checked out. It's not worth it, you can't wait around, don't risk your life over some little something that may or may not be important. If it's melanoma, it's important! Go get the book, "Fears, Tears and Ears," read it, save yourself some heartache. If you're not facing medical decisions, maybe somebody you know is. Get the book; help somebody today! Even though it's no longer skin cancer awareness month, here's another great tip for at home detection. http://DermTV.com Connect with DermTV: http://www.facebook.com/dermtv http://www.twitter.com/dermtv [TRANSCRIPT] DermTV, The Skin Cancer Foundation, the American Academy of Dermatology, The American Cancer Society, and many other leading authorities all stress the importance of self examinations as an aid to the early detection of cancer since the earlier you find it, the more apt it is to be completely curable. So this episode is going to be about a trick for doing better self skin cancer exams. Generally speaking, in most medical issues, symmetry is a reliable indicator that something isn't dangerous. So, in doing a self skin exam, if you find a mole or growth that is symmetric, then it is probably normal and not cancerous or precancerous. And just to remind you, a growth is symmetrical if you can fold it down the middle and the two halves are identical. Just like when I fold this circle in half. Yet in all of medicine there is only one situation that I know of where symmetry actually is a bad sign and usually indicates that something is abnormal and in fact at very least, precancerous. That situation occurs when two moles occur symmetrically to each other on your body. So imagine a line drawn down the center of your body, which of course goes right through your belly button. If you have two moles on your stomach, both about equal distance to the left and right of your bellybutton, then there is a very high probability that both of those moles are precancerous and each have a 20 to 25% life time probability of becoming melanomas. They should be shown to a dermatologist and probably be removed. The bottom line is that moles which are symmetric to each other with respect to the midline of your body are usually very dangerous, precancerous moles which if not removed have an unacceptably high probability of becoming deadly melanomas, a cancer that sadly claims the life of one American every hour. This is a truly rare medical example of symmetry being very dangerous, so if you come across it, show it to your doctor. http://www.onlinedermclinic.com In this tutorial, Kevin St.Clair M.D., discusses the diagnosis and management of seborrheic keratoses. Watch our tutorials given by U.S. Board Certified dermatologists at Onlinedermclinic.com.

Skin moles are growths on the skin, often round or oval-shaped with a dark color. The color may however vary to different shades. Some skin moles are flat while others are a bit raised from the skin. A skin mole is caused by the melanocyte cells in the skin. These cells produce melanin and are responsible for the color of the skin, eyes and hair. It is formed when melanocyte cells do not spread through the skin but grow in clusters. Usually melanocyte cells grow normally and so the growth is usually benign. However in certain cases the melanocyte cells may start to grow in an abnormal way, which may result in melanoma, a cancer of the skin. Skin moles are very common. Most of them are present at birth while others appear as the person grows older. Some may also disappear with age. Their main causes depend mainly on. Heredity. Exposure to sunlight. Hormonal changes. Age. They may become darker. The principle reason for this is too much exposure to sunlight. Heavy exposure to sunlight during childhood and the teenage years highly increases the chances of developing new skin moles or that current ones increase in size. Sunbeds and tanning salons can also increase their growth. Our genes determine many factors. If your parents have plenty of skin moles, probably you will have a lot too. Furthermore a history of skin cancer in your family also increases the risk that a mole may grow or develops into a cancerous growth. Hormonal changes also make them to grow or new ones to appear. This may more commonly happen during pregnancy, the menopausal stage and during teenage years. Generally as we get older, some tend to disappear. Watch more videos about skin diseases, treatment options, and try our free "diagnosis wizard" we call DermaLearn at OnlineDermClinic.com. The number of skin cancers is rising at an alarming rate. In the U.S., the risk for melanoma is now 1 in 58. This is up from 1 in 1500 in 1930. If melanoma is diagnosed early, the chance for cure approaches 100%; however, for widespread metastatic melanoma, survival is only 6 to 9 months. What you don't know can harm you or prove fatal. Avoid being a statistic and learn the warning signs and causes of this potentially curable form of skin cancer.Key points Typically Appear in sun exposed areas of skin tend to be less than 6 mm in diameter, have an orderly, homogenous surface with a symmetrical, sharply demarcated border, round or oval shape, and have a light to dark brown color. Are categorized as junctional, compound, or intradermal based upon their location in the epidermis or dermis Begin to appear within the first 6 months of life, most are present by the age of 30, and slowly regress with age. Most Nevi are benign, however atypical MN or a large number of nevi should be examined and followed by a dermatologist Common Acquired Melanocytic Nevi, or moles, are clusters of melanocytes that develop primarily due to genetic factors. However, there is some evidence that they may be created by a stimulus, such as ultraviolet radiation, that causes a proliferation of melanocytes. Melanocytes are pigment (melanin) producing cells and are formed from neural crest cells that migrate to the skin, central nervous system, eyes, and ears during normal embryogenesis. Melanocytic Nevi are categorized by their location in the skin as junctional nevus (epidermis), intradermal nevus (dermis), or compound nevus (both dermis and epidermis). Melanocytes begin in the basal layer of the epidermis coming together to form junctional nevi. Over time melanocytes may migrate down through the epidermis-dermis junction to the dermis forming compound and intradermal nevi respectively. Generally, Common Acquired Melanocytic Nevi first appear as brown papules or macules, smaller than 6mm in diameter. As we age, more nevi become visible and their appearance begins to change so that the nevi lose their pigmentation, and become more elevated and dome-shaped. Melanocytic nevi are generally light to dark brown, but may range in color from skin colored to jet black. Melanocytic Nevi appear in both men and women. Moles are more prevalent in light skinned people then dark skinned people. Darker skinned people tend to have MN appear on the palms, soles of their feet, and underneath their fingernails, while Light skinned people are more likely to have moles appear on their trunks and extremities. Melanocytic nevi first appear in early childhood and usually stop appearing by early adulthood. For this reason, new moles in middle or late adulthood should carry a higher suspicion for Melanoma. Most adults will have 10-30 moles on their body. Differential Diagnosis · Atypical Mole(Dysplastic nevus) · Melanoma, Malignant Melanoma · Congenital Nevi · Given their different appearances, Junctional, Intradermal, and Compound Nevi have their own differential diagnoses. Diagnosis Key points Clinical presentation is the most important aspect of diagnosis Histologic examination confirms diagnosis Diagnosis is primarily made by history and clinical presentation. When the clinical picture is murky, a complete excisional biopsy and histopathologic evaluation of the mole is made to rule out Melanoma. The histologic findings of small, uniform, symmetrical, well circumscribed nests of melanocytes are reassuring for melanocytic nevi. Treatment Key points In most cases moles do not require treatment Suspicious moles should be removed and examined Prevent skin damage from sun exposure Melanocytic Nevi are, by definition, benign and most moles remain benign throughout a person's lifetime. Therefore, most moles will never need to be treated. However, suspicion that a mole may be a Melanoma, a change in the size, shape, or pigmentation of the mole, chronic irritation, or cosmetic concerns are reasons that the melanocytic nevi may be removed via excisional biopsy. When this is performed, if possible, the entire lesion should be removed and undergo histologic evaluation to rule out malignancy. It is important for individuals who have a significant number of nevi to have counseling about the dangers of excessive sun exposure, skin protection, and to undergo periodic total skin inspections by a dermatologist.

Why do I get warts on my hands? It did not come from kissing a frog or even shaking hands with your last bad date, no matter how much of a toad he was. So how did I get it? Probably HPV, the human papillomavirus. That’s an STD. It is a virus that can cause warts, both as an STD and in more public areas. Kids are especially prone to developing HPV warts on the hands. Here’s yet another reason to yell at them not to pick that up, you do not know where it has been. You can pick up the virus, any one of more than a hundred strains, from touching doorknobs, keyboards, and almost anything else. And here’s a brand new reason to use hand sanitizer. Soap, water and abrasion are sufficient. Some strains of the virus cause hand warts, some cause STD warts, and some cause both. HPV has been linked to the rise in oral cancer despite the decline in cigarette smoking, so it causes warts and health hazards every which way. Am I going to get hand cancer? Is that even a thing? It is rare to get skin cancer from HPV, in part because you can see when it grows after its initial formation, changes colors, gets a bloody border or the other signs of cancerous changes. How else is it spread? The virus is more likely to take root somewhere the skin is open, which is why guys are more likely to get warts in the beard area and women on the legs. And yet no one has bothered advertising that as a benefit of laser hair removal. It is not an absolute, but you can even spread the virus from one part of the body to another through use of a towel or razor. If using the same towel on my body all over spreads the virus, how am I not already a walking horror story? The virus does not cause warts all the time – and some of your warts are actually from HPV. Some of them are freckles that grow thicker over time. While I try to get an even tan all over, I’m usually focused on my legs and face, not my hands. Have you ever seen RV drivers comparing arm tans from their arms in the sun as they spend hours with their hands on the wheel? Any of those sun spots can grow to a wart. And yet another reason to get driving gloves no one ever talks about.
