Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and bariatric surgeon who offers both surgical and nonsurgical weight loss solutions. In this video he explains that your hormones and neurotransmitters play a much larger role in controlling your hunger and your appetite and why gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy work to alter the signals being sent to your brain. Dr. Weiner performs gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and gastric banding surgery through his practice located within the DMC Huron Valley Sinai Hospital. Dr. Matthew Weiner is an author and surgeon who specializes in the treatment of obesity. His view on obesity differs from the traditional understanding of calorie balance driving weight loss and weight gain. Dr. Weiner offers both surgical and non-surgical programs in his office and on his website www.poundofcureweightloss.com. His book, A Pound of Cure, details how to change your diet to mimic the changes that occur directly after undergoing bariatric surgery and produce lifetime weight loss. Access the show notes here http://highintensityhealth.com/revealing-the-links-between-food-gut-hormones-and-intestinal-bacteria/ Key Takeaways • Enteroendocrine cells and why they are so important • Metabolites released from enteroendocrine cells: the local and systemic effects • Key herbs, phytochemicals, proteins, and prebiotics that beneficially affect enteroendocrine cells • How prebiotics improve enteroendocrine cell function What are gut hormones? After you eat, the 50–70 percent rise in insulin, the pancreatic hormone that regulates blood sugar, is contingent upon the proper secretion of incretins, hormones released from the intestinal tract. (The most widely understood incretin hormones are called GLP-1, GLP-2, CCK, and PYY.) In addition to their integral role in blood sugar and insulin regulation, incretins govern appetite, growth of intestinal tissue, and intestinal transit and emptying. Bariatric surgery and the new generation of antidiabetic medications are linked to rapid improvements in blood levels of these incretins as well as other molecules, such as leptin, that regulate appetite.

And an interesting situation came up: right as the student joined my program, her friend got the surgery. But six months later, here's how it panned out: Her friend lost the 70 pounds she wanted (from the surgery). ... And then gained 100 pounds after (and regretted the $10,000 she spent on it). While my student finally got her pre-pregnancy weight back she hadn't seen in 10 years. Having said that - what really ARE the risks of getting weight loss surgery? In today's video we'll talk about them. Here's What The Researchers Found In the first study, 41 patients (93% were female) were included to assess the effects (in this case, also the side effects) of lap band surgery. Out of the patients here, 76% suffered some kind of complication (infections, leaks, etc) and ten wanted their band removed. But here's what's funny: 5 (12%) maintained their weight, but all the others gained weight. Yes, you read that right. After removal of the band, the mean BMI was 36.7 versus 29.4, so the BMI substantially increased (and 36 is very high for a person). 73% would not agree to gastric banding again, and the researchers concluded that in 66% of cases, this was a failure. I don't know about you, but those stats don't sound too good to me. Study #2: Not Enough Weight Lost? In the second study here, 37 patients had lap band surgery, and then they were followed up on for four years. The devices were removed in 15 (41%) patients some time during that period due to complications. The most common reason for removal was inadequate weight loss in the presence of a functioning band. The primary reasons for removal in others were infection, leakage from the inflatable silicone ring causing inadequate weight loss, or band slippage. Overall, only four patients achieved a body-mass index of less than 35 and/or at least a 50% reduction in excess weight. So in this second study, the most common reason for removal was "not enough weight lost" - including the complications you read here. What's Going On Here? So let's look at the facts: - This stuff isn't necessarily as effective as it's supposed to be - There's a VERY high rate of complications - One study even found that inadequate weight loss was a reason for removing the band early - And 3/4 wouldn't ever do it again or recommend it ... Am I missing something here? I know it's human nature for us to want quick fixes, and there are definitely valid medical reasons for wanting this surgery, but hopefully this'll help some people reconsider. If we focus on a QUICK WIN with no work...usually we LOSE quickly too. And what about my student? Well, you be the judge:

Special thanks to John Gunstad, professor with the Department of Psychological Sciences at Kent State University, for speaking with us about his cutting-edge research on how losing weight affects brain function. Tech Insider tells you all you need to know about tech: gadgets, how-to's, gaming, science, digital culture, and more. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is the transcript of the video: Here’s what losing weight does to your body and brain. During the first week, you may find it easy to lose weight by simply switching to a healthier diet. But as your metabolism adjusts, you won’t burn as many calories as you used to. So losing additional weight will become harder. Making matters worse, as the fat melts away, you’ll start to experience an increase in appetite. After a meal, fat cells release a hormone called leptin into the bloodstream. This surge in leptin levels signals to your brain you’re full and should stop eating. But with less overall fat, people who lose weight show a measurable dip in leptin. Brain scans of obese patients who had lost 10% of their body weight revealed that less leptin leads to increased activity in regions of the brain that control our desire to eat. The result isn’t just an increased appetite but an even stronger urge to eat fatty, high-calorie foods, because your brain is trying to restore the body’s leptin levels to normal. However, fighting that early impulse to gorge on pizza and donuts is worth it in the long run. Besides the decreased risk of heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, scientists studying overweight people discovered that losing just one pound of body weight reduces four pounds of pressure on knee joints. Losing excess weight also reduces strain on the blood vessels, increases blood flow to the brain, and boosts overall brain function. Several studies have shown that people who underwent weight-loss surgery saw an improvement in memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills in as soon as three months. Plus, brain scans indicate that people who lost weight and kept it off for nine months reacted differently when shown images of high-calorie foods than before they lost the weight. The brain regions that process reward, motivation, and taste didn’t react as strongly, whereas the areas that promote overall self-control had a boost in activity. So fighting those cravings early on might make them easier to control later. Turns out — like anything else — losing weight can get easier with practice.

Watch more How to Understand Obesity videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/511360-Weight-Loss-Surgery-and-Diabetes-Obesity We know that obesity and diabetes are closely related. In fact about 85% of type 2 diabetics are obese. One option to help lose weight is weight loss surgery and weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery has been shown to positively affect diabetes and in many cases to actually cure diabetes in some people. When we talk about weight loss surgery, we're talking about things like the gastric band, the gastric sleeve or the gastric bypass. So with all of these surgeries you lose weight, and after you lose weight, your sugars are usually better controlled. The exciting thing about the sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve and the gastric bypass surgeries, in particular, are that after you have these surgeries the hormonal environment in your body is changed, such that your body is better able to handle sugars. For example, I have patients that are type 2 diabetic that are on insulin and then have gastric bypass, say. Some of these patients actually leave the hospital and never need their insulin again. So clearly, the weight loss surgery is curing their diabetes, not just from weight loss because they're not losing 100 pounds overnight, but it's because of the hormonal changes that happen in their body. Studies have been published by the Cleveland Clinic, as well as Cornell comparing the difference between weight loss surgery and medication alone for the treatment of diabetes. And I believe the results were actually published on the front page of the New York Times, and these studies showed that weight loss surgery, actually had better results in controlling diabetes than medication alone. So if you are obese and you do have type 2 diabetes, speak with your doctor because maybe weight loss surgery is an option for you.

Post Op Hair Loss | Blossom Bariatrics | Las Vegas I get a lot of questions about hair loss post bariatric surgery and there's many reasons why hair loss can happen. Now "can" is the word to remember. It doesn't always happen, but there are some things to take into consideration if you find that your hair is thinning or you do lose some hair after your weight loss surgery. The first thing that can attribute to hair loss would be hormonal imbalances. Oftentimes, too little testosterone and too much estrogen, called estrogen dominance, can result in thinning hair or hair loss. Something else that you may want to consider is thyroid dysfunction or hypothyroidism. This is very important and is usually the key factor in hair loss, even in folks who have not had bariatric surgery. So hypothyroidism means low thyroid hormones and it's very important to get those levels tested by a blood test. So please make sure that you have optimal levels of thyroid hormone production in your body. Folks who experience hypothyroidism always feel a little bit chilly, have cold hands, cold feet all the time, and the corner of your eyebrows--either there's thinning or they're completely falling out. That's a dead giveaway. Low iron or iron deficiency or anemia can be tested from your primary care doctor with a simple lab test. Low iron can contribute to hair loss as well as low B12. So make sure to get tested for your B12 levels and your iron levels in your blood. Folks struggling with H Pylori, that can lower your B12 levels and lower your iron levels too. So again, make sure you get tested for H Pylori. Another contributing factor for hair loss would be bariatric weight loss surgery. Right after surgery, the shock of eating less food and possibly getting less nutrients can tell your body "Whoa, wait a minute. Stop hair growth. It's not important to me. I need to make sure that every other vital organ gets the nutrients it needs." Also take into consideration that it depends on where you're at in your normal hair growth cycle. If you have surgery within that little time frame it can actually slow the new hair growth until your body senses it's getting the nutrients it needs again. To prevent nutrient deficiency post weight loss surgery make sure you get your protein, your whey protein or your plant-based protein drinks. You never stop those if you're concerned about hair loss. Protein contains an amino acid called ProLine. ProLine has been shown to build collagen and collagen is one of the main components of hair growth and hairs. So make sure you're getting all the protein you need to get it in every single day, at least 60-80 grams. Also, take your supplements. Never, ever, ever, do not take your supplements. So for instance, your multivitamin will have adequate amounts of B vitamins, which are key for hair growth, particularly B12 and biotin. Hair growth supplements contain methylcobalamin B12, biotin, zinc. Zinc is important for hair growth as well and maybe some silica, which is a mineral that aids in tissue growth. Thanks for watching. You can beat menopausal belly fat. Watch as Dr. Becky shares the foods to eat and avoid to starve your fat cells (not yourself). Click Here for Dr. Becky's Weight Loss Coaching Program http://www.drbeckyfitness.com/coaching When you reach menopause your body wants more fat because fat is a source of estrogen. You don’t want those extra pounds, so in this video I’ll show you how to keep belly fat under control by starving your fat cells, without starving yourself. Menopause changes two things: 1. It change where fat is stored on your body (i.e. more gets deposited in your midsection and less in your lower body). 2. It changes where estrogen is produced. The ovaries no longer make estrogen, but your fat cells do, so higher body fat% is not frowned upon by your post-menopausal body. Cortisol is another hormone that is not automatically thought about with menopause, but it contributes to belly fat. Think of cortisol as the stress hormone, physical or emotional stress, even a lack of sleep causes an increased release of cortisol. Bottom Line: you have to work with your body during and after menopause to get it to do what you want. The trick is to starve your fat cells without starving yourself. In this video I show you how with the right food choices and time-restricted eating. http://www.bariatricmexicosurgery.com/ 1 (800) 316-8234 If you are considering weight loss surgery in Mexico, it’s a good idea to have your Vitamin D Levels checked to ensure that you have a sufficient amount in your body as not having enough could negatively affect the outcome of your procedure. A study released in December 2015 by Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers indicates that patients who underwent weight loss surgeries in the winter, specifically the months of January, February and March suffered more complications than individuals who had procedures at other times of the year. Don’t put off your weight loss surgery, however, if you’re scheduled soon. The same study indicated that 71% of complications occurred in Northern latitudes, giving you yet another reason for traveling south to Tijuana to have bariatric surgery. Vitamin D, technically a hormone produced by the human body, is called the sunshine vitamin because sunlight affects its production in the body. Patients from northern climates are likely to have lower levels of Vitamin D in their bodies during winter because of fewer hours of daylight. Thus, while you shouldn’t delay having bariatric surgery when weighed against its health benefits, the wise thing to do is make sure that you’re getting adequate amounts in a supplement before surgery. The Johns Hopkins study indicated that adverse outcomes from bariatric surgery are rare, with less than 1% of patients developing infections, but prolonged hospital stays of more than three days were more common, affecting up to 40% of patients. Only patients who had bariatric surgery in the United States were included in the survey that tracked the outcomes of 930,000 individuals who had weight loss procedures between 2001 and 2010. Of those individuals, patients who lived north of the 37th parallel, roughly the northern edge of South Carolina, were much more likely to experience infections or extended hospital stays. Post-operative complications, such as wound infections, non-healing wounds, wound separation and delayed wound healing, occurred more frequently in colder climates with less sunshine. More than twice as many patients experienced wound healing complications, .16 percent of procedures reviewed, compared to .07 percent in the summer. The study noted that additional research should be performed to determine appropriate vitamin D levels for pre-emptive treatment prior to bariatric surgery as an observational study such as the one conducted has limitations and is not sufficient to recommend regular use of Vitamin D supplements as a strategy to prevent or reduce post-surgical complications. The surgeons at Mexico Bariatric Center often prescribe Vitamin D supplements after weight loss surgery because of the body’s decreased ability to absorb the nutrient. Sun exposure is vital to the synthesis of Vitamin D, with experts believing that most people can get enough from regular but brief sun exposure, a healthy diet and possible supplementation. Excessive Vitamin D intake can cause side effects such as nausea, constipation, confusion and heart arrhythmia. Obesity, however, is a recognized risk factor for Vitamin D deficiency. Johns Hopkins researchers recommend that patients preparing to undergo weight loss surgery be screened for Vitamin D deficiency.

The terms gastric bypass and lap-band are sometimes used interchangeably, but are very different procedures. Gastric bypass is a major surgery, while lap-band, although it is a surgery, can be done thru the laparoscope, and can be reversed easily. One major difference was an unexpected one. Gastric bypass stimulates the gut to release a hormone called GLP-1, which aides in weight loss by delaying gastric emptying and triggering a feeling of satiety.

reference from ... www.obesitysurgery.com.hk/gastric-sleeve.html Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Want to have a better control of eating volume without the need to avoid various foods? Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, a restrictive minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, is the most widely performed weight loss surgery in Asia. By reducing the stomach size, patients will feel a sense of fullness much earlier, and thereby substantially reducing the volume intake. Besides more effective weight loss, this surgery is effective in diabetic treatment with a remission rate of almost 70%. This surgery can significantly suppress the secretion of Ghrelin -- a powerful appetite stimulating hormone. Patients recover quickly from surgery and are able to return to their daily activities in a short period of time. In order to achieve your target body weight, patients will have regular follow up with Dr. Wong and his team of allied health specialist (including dietitian and physiotherapist). Procedure of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy This surgery is indicated for patients with BMI over 30. Two weeks prior to surgery you are instructed to have only fluid diet and milk supplements. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Wong will make 4-5 small (1-1.5cm) incisions and remove 70-80% of the stomach in order to create a 'banana' shaped stomach. The entire procedure last for about one and half hours and patients will be discharged from hospital 3-4 days after surgery. After your surgery, fluid and congee diet must be maintained within the first month in order to allow for good wound healing. After then, a "new" normal diet can be resumed. All patients must follow dietitians' advise to ensure effective weight loss. Benefits of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy •Obvious weight loss: ~70-80% of the stomach will be removed thus significantly reduce stomach volume and induce a much earlier sense of satiety. •Effective diabetic control: with the reduced stomach volume and changes in hormones, such as increasing glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) for diabetes treatment that is stimulated by faster stomach emptying. •Reduced appetite: There is an immediate reduction in levels of the appetite stimulating hormone -- Ghrelin, thus significantly reduce patient's hunger sensation and appetite.

http://www.bariatricmexicosurgery.com Proteins are essential nutrients for the human body; they form muscles, bones, skin, hair tissues and actually every cell in our bodies. Also they are needed for repairing and healing our bodies adequately (for example after a surgery!), hormones and enzymes production. Proteins are formed by building blocks called amino acid. Some of them can be synthetized by our bodies but others need to come from our diet (essential amino acids). When the protein or the energy intake is not enough, the body will break down lean body mass to compensate what it is not getting. After weight loss surgery some lean body mass (muscle) will be inevitable sacrificed, so the main goal is to minimize this lost. According to the ASMBS guidelines, most patients get 60-80 grams daily, but some may require more depending on their type of surgery and healing process. Also the Association recommends that protein should be taken in multiple doses, across multiple meals or healthy snacks. They explain that the body cannot absorb more than approximately 30 grams at once. After bariatric surgery it is difficult enough to get protein only from foods, so you will need to take protein shakes. Most people need to continue with them during the first year and even for longer if they are exercising. Protein shakes or protein powders can provide between 15-30g per serving. Just make sure that the one you choose has below 3g of sugar. If you choose an unflavored protein powder you can add a variety of ingredients and keep it healthy and fun!

How does bariatric surgery help these obese women, who are unable to get pregnant. That means who are infertile. Once they lose this excess weight, their hormones come into balance and believe it or not, within 3 to 4 months, these are able to get pregnant, but as I said, in bariatric surgery, we do restriction of diet. So we tell them not to get pregnant for atleast 8 to 9 months post-surgery because once they get pregnant, they should be able to get enough nutrition for both the mother and the child. We have done at least 40 to 50 of infertile cases and each and every patient has conceived. So this is the success of the surgery.

http://www.bariatricmexicosurgery.com 1 (800) 316-8234 Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is not as well known as diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and other conditions exacerbated by excessive weight. Yet for women affected by this syndrome, its consequences are just as serious as it causes infertility, and if left untreated can also, over time, lead to diabetes and heart disease. Successful weight loss surgery in Mexico encompasses a number of health benefits that are byproducts of the weight loss process. Significant weight loss is known to lower high blood pressure and even eliminate the need for diabetes medicines, but it also improves infertility issues in obese women afflicted with PCOS. Gaining a tremendous amount of weight, particularly around the waist is a characteristic of PCOS. Women with PCOS have a difficult time losing that extra weight. Extra hair or its opposite, extreme thinning of hair, are other signs. Additional symptoms include acne or dark patches of skin, pelvic pain and sometimes depression. Researchers don’t know exactly why some women acquire PCOS, but high levels of insulin seek to be at the root of the illness. Being overweight also increases one’s chances of developing it. Genes also play a role, so if your mother or sister has PCOS, you are also more likely to develop it. Most women are diagnosed in their 20s or 30s, but even girls as young as 11 have been found to have it. Women afflicted with PCOS grow numerous small cysts on their ovaries. These cysts do not harm the ovaries but lead to hormone imbalances, as he body produces more of the male sex hormone androgen. This tendency can cause women to stop ovulating, have irregular periods, often less than nine per year, resulting in difficulty getting pregnant. In addition to the aforementioned symptoms, PCOS suffers tend to develop insulin resistance, causing blood sugar levels to go up and increase risk of developing diabetes. Symptoms tend to be mild at first but increase as time progresses. PCOS affects as many as 5 million women in the United States. To be diagnosed with the syndrome, women must have two of three symptoms, including a high level of androgen, infrequent and irregular periods and more than 12 cysts. Common treatments include birth control pills to regulate periods or other female hormones. The diabetes drug Metformin and Aldactone, a diuretic, are also used to treat PCOS. More than 60% of women with PCOS are classified as obese. Weight loss is touted as one of the best natural methods for improving fertility in PCOS patients especially when it occurs in conjunction with lifestyle changes such as a healthy diet and frequent exercise. A study published in 2015 the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism indicated that obese and overweight women who experienced significant weight loss had higher rates of conception whether or not they had PCOS.
