Researchers report that along with sharp decreases in hormone-related cancers, the risk for colorectal cancer increased by more than twofold. July 16 (UPI) -- Weight loss surgery may decrease a person's risk of developing hormone-related cancers, increase the chance of colon cancer, according to study in England. Researchers examined data from the Hospital Episode Statistics database in England between 1997 and 2012. The findings were published Friday in the British Journal of Surgery. Researchers analyzed medical records for 8,794 obese patients who underwent gastric bypass, gastric banding or sleeve gastrectomy, comparing them with an equal number of obese individuals who did not have surgery. People who had a weight loss surgery had a 77 percent decreased risk of developing hormone-related cancer -- breast, endometrial or prostate cancer -- compared with patients that did not have the surgery. And an interesting situation came up: right as the student joined my program, her friend got the surgery. But six months later, here's how it panned out: Her friend lost the 70 pounds she wanted (from the surgery). ... And then gained 100 pounds after (and regretted the $10,000 she spent on it). While my student finally got her pre-pregnancy weight back she hadn't seen in 10 years. Having said that - what really ARE the risks of getting weight loss surgery? In today's video we'll talk about them. Here's What The Researchers Found In the first study, 41 patients (93% were female) were included to assess the effects (in this case, also the side effects) of lap band surgery. Out of the patients here, 76% suffered some kind of complication (infections, leaks, etc) and ten wanted their band removed. But here's what's funny: 5 (12%) maintained their weight, but all the others gained weight. Yes, you read that right. After removal of the band, the mean BMI was 36.7 versus 29.4, so the BMI substantially increased (and 36 is very high for a person). 73% would not agree to gastric banding again, and the researchers concluded that in 66% of cases, this was a failure. I don't know about you, but those stats don't sound too good to me. Study #2: Not Enough Weight Lost? In the second study here, 37 patients had lap band surgery, and then they were followed up on for four years. The devices were removed in 15 (41%) patients some time during that period due to complications. The most common reason for removal was inadequate weight loss in the presence of a functioning band. The primary reasons for removal in others were infection, leakage from the inflatable silicone ring causing inadequate weight loss, or band slippage. Overall, only four patients achieved a body-mass index of less than 35 and/or at least a 50% reduction in excess weight. So in this second study, the most common reason for removal was "not enough weight lost" - including the complications you read here. What's Going On Here? So let's look at the facts: - This stuff isn't necessarily as effective as it's supposed to be - There's a VERY high rate of complications - One study even found that inadequate weight loss was a reason for removing the band early - And 3/4 wouldn't ever do it again or recommend it ... Am I missing something here? I know it's human nature for us to want quick fixes, and there are definitely valid medical reasons for wanting this surgery, but hopefully this'll help some people reconsider. If we focus on a QUICK WIN with no work...usually we LOSE quickly too. And what about my student? Well, you be the judge:

In this video Dr. Berg talks about if you can do Keto & Intermittent Fasting if you've had gastric bypass surgery and the answer is YES! You do have to follow a few steps to do it successfully and here are the steps: 1.) Acidify the stomach - Best way would be to have some apple cider vinegar or take some apple cider vinegar pills 2.) Purified Bile Salts - This supports your gallbladder. Gastric bypass surgery alters the ability to release bile. Purified bath salts after a meal will help absorb the food you are already eating. 3.) Minerals - Liquid plant based trace minerals are 15,000 times smaller and they absorb way better. If you combine all these steps with Keto and Intermittent Fasting then you will be happy with the results. After you eat, the 50–70 percent rise in insulin, the pancreatic hormone that regulates blood sugar, is contingent upon the proper secretion of incretins, hormones released from the intestinal tract. (The most widely understood incretin hormones are called GLP-1, GLP-2, CCK, and PYY.) In addition to their integral role in blood sugar and insulin regulation, incretins govern appetite, growth of intestinal tissue, and intestinal transit and emptying. Bariatric surgery and the new generation of antidiabetic medications are linked to rapid improvements in blood levels of these incretins as well as other molecules, such as leptin, that regulate appetite.

www.medfreelancers.com Weight Loss Surgery (Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery) Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Bariatric surgery (weight loss surgery) includes a variety of procedures performed on people who have obesity. Weight loss is achieved by reducing the size of the stomach with a gastric band or through removal of a portion of the stomach (sleeve gastrectomy or biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch) or by resecting and re-routing the small intestine to a small stomach pouch (gastric bypass surgery). Long-term studies show the procedures cause significant long-term loss of weight, recovery from diabetes, improvement in cardiovascular risk factors, and a mortality reduction from 40% to 23%. However, a study in Veterans Affairs (VA) patients has found no survival benefit associated with bariatric surgery among older, severely obese people when compared with usual care, at least out to seven years. However, research is emerging that suggests bariatric surgery could be appropriate for those with a BMI of 35 to 40 with no comorbidities or a BMI of 30 to 35 with significant comorbidities. The most recent ASMBS guidelines suggest the position statement on consensus for BMI as an indication for bariatric surgery. The recent guidelines suggest that any patient with a BMI of more than 30 with comorbidities is a candidate for bariatric surgery. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bariatric_surgery Please Subscribe, Like or share this Surgical Video. Special thanks to John Gunstad, professor with the Department of Psychological Sciences at Kent State University, for speaking with us about his cutting-edge research on how losing weight affects brain function. Subscribe to our channel and visit us at: http://www.businessinsider.com/sai TI on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/techinsider TI on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tech_insider/ TI on Twitter: https://twitter.com/techinsider -------------------------------------------------- Following is the transcript of the video: Here’s what losing weight does to your body and brain. During the first week, you may find it easy to lose weight by simply switching to a healthier diet. But as your metabolism adjusts, you won’t burn as many calories as you used to. So losing additional weight will become harder. Making matters worse, as the fat melts away, you’ll start to experience an increase in appetite. After a meal, fat cells release a hormone called leptin into the bloodstream. This surge in leptin levels signals to your brain you’re full and should stop eating. But with less overall fat, people who lose weight show a measurable dip in leptin. Brain scans of obese patients who had lost 10% of their body weight revealed that less leptin leads to increased activity in regions of the brain that control our desire to eat. The result isn’t just an increased appetite but an even stronger urge to eat fatty, high-calorie foods, because your brain is trying to restore the body’s leptin levels to normal. However, fighting that early impulse to gorge on pizza and donuts is worth it in the long run. Besides the decreased risk of heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, scientists studying overweight people discovered that losing just one pound of body weight reduces four pounds of pressure on knee joints. Losing excess weight also reduces strain on the blood vessels, increases blood flow to the brain, and boosts overall brain function. Several studies have shown that people who underwent weight-loss surgery saw an improvement in memory, concentration, and problem-solving skills in as soon as three months. Plus, brain scans indicate that people who lost weight and kept it off for nine months reacted differently when shown images of high-calorie foods than before they lost the weight. The brain regions that process reward, motivation, and taste didn’t react as strongly, whereas the areas that promote overall self-control had a boost in activity. So fighting those cravings early on might make them easier to control later. Turns out — like anything else — losing weight can get easier with practice.

Protein's Role After Weight Loss Surgery. The Importance of Protein in the Body and Diet. Protein is a part of each cell inside the human body. It is utilized to manufacture and repair tissues, for example, when muscles tear amid exercise, or following a surgery. Protein is a vital segment in body structures including bones, ligament, blood, and muscles. It assumes an essential part in hormone and chemical creation. Protein isn't put away inside the body until the point that a later time when it is required. Therefore, it is basic to get a satisfactory oral admission of protein to address the body's issues. After weight reduction medical procedure, it is more imperative than any other time in recent memory to devour satisfactory sums with a specific end goal to maintain a strategic distance from side effects identified with insufficiency. Amino acids are the building squares of protein. Our body produces 13 amino acids, yet there are 9 basic amino acids which we don't normally deliver. Protein sources expended ought to be differed to guarantee that the majority of the basic amino acids are fused into the eating routine (see the table underneath for cases of protein sources). Protein Needs After Weight Loss Surgery. After weight reduction medical procedure, the body needs protein to advance injury mending. Weight reduction techniques decrease the measure of sustenance admission, making protein the most critical supplement to devour. Without satisfactory protein consumption, undesirable impacts can happen. These include: *malnutrition/frailty. *muscle misfortune. *decreased sex drive. *depression. *fatigue. *thinning hair and weak nails. As indicated by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, most patients who have experienced bariatric medical procedure require 60-80 grams of protein day by day. This sum can fluctuate and is controlled by the specialist/doctor. The human body can't ingest in excess of 30 grams of protein at once, so this must be separated into various suppers for the duration of the day. Protein shakes are regularly utilized as a supplement to guarantee sufficient protein with insignificant calories is devoured. Protein Shake Protein Supplementation with Powders. Protein powders are a prevalent method to guarantee sufficient protein admission without bringing about abundance calorie and fat admission. There are a few protein sources that the powders are sourced from, which are depicted beneath. *Whey Protein originates from drain. It additionally contains lactose, which can cause issues for those with lactose narrow mindedness (a typical improvement after weight reduction medical procedure). *Whey Protein Isolate is prepared to expel the lactose for less demanding absorption. It is a standout amongst the most generally utilized powder supplements with bariatric patients. *Casein is likewise gotten from drain. It frames a gel while interfacing with stomach corrosive, in this manner easing back processing to look after satiety. *Egg protein powder is commonly produced using egg whites as it were. It contains each of the 9 fundamental amino acids. Since the yolks are not utilized, it may not advance completion as long as different powders. *Pea powder is produced using the yellow split pea. It contains 8 of the basic amino acids. While moderately new and requiring more research, it might help lessen circulatory strain. Since it is plantbased, it is an extraordinary alternatives for veggie lovers and vegetarians. *Brown rice powder additionally contains every one of the 9 amino acids, in spite of the fact that it is generally new to the powder showcase so there isn't much research with respect to its satiety factor. Avoiding Boredom in Daily Protein Consumption. Concentrating to a great extent on getting enough protein in the eating regimen can get entirely exhausting sooner or later. This can make it difficult to remain on track with weight reduction objectives. Changing the protein sources one eats is a decent begin to avoiding fatigue. Including flavors, sauces or sauces can give new life to some old top choices. Looking into new formulas online is another incredible method to extend your protein choices and keep up your advantage. Protein shakes can be made with an assortment of fixings to change their flavor. Including solidified organic product builds the fiber and water content while giving distinctive flavor choices. New spinach includes supplements without changing the taste. In the event that devouring a shake instead of a feast, yogurt can be added to make it creamier and all the more filling. Greek yogurt has more protein than conventional yogurt. All Photos Licensed Under CC Source : www.pexels.com www.pixabay.com www.commons.wikimedia.org

It is about the time that you are not eating. 31:24 Insulin inhibits lipolysis, stopping you from burning fat. 32:24 On a 7 day water only fast, your insulin falls and you switch from burning food to burning fat. 33:13 During fasting, as your insulin falls, you get a counter-regulatory hormone surge, increasing adrenaline, noradrenaline, growth hormone and cortisol. 33:53 There is a period of gluconeogenesis at around 24 hours into fasting. You will burn protein, not muscle. 35:40 If the old protein is never broken down, you cannot build new protein. 37:26 You get much better retention of lean mass with an intermittent fasting strategy over cutting calories. 38:24 Biggest Loser style diets sink metabolic rates. 42:15 Women can fast. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. Women have higher ghrelin spikes. 43:01 If you don't eat over 24 hours ghrelin spikes 3 times, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, then drops. Hunger does not continue to increase. 45:04 Cravings disappear with fasting and keto. 49:38 You can eat high carb foods and keep low insulin. 51:09 Sugar is more fattening than other carbohydrates. 53:51 Natural foods have natural satiety mechanisms. 01:08:31 Type 2 diabetes is misunderstood by doctors. 01:10:08 Blood glucose is a symptom of type 2 diabetes. We treat the symptom, not the disease. 01:12:15 Type 2 diabetes is reversible, except for the very late stage. 01:16:42 The longer you've been overweight the more it effects weight loss. 01:18:08 There are conflicts of interest in medicine. Much evidence is produced by pharmaceutical companies. Universities take funding from industry and produce shoddy research. 01:30:21 Bias in nutrition science is rampant and has stymied the advancement of actual science. Special interest needs to be out of research.

Watch more How to Understand Obesity videos: http://www.howcast.com/videos/511360-Weight-Loss-Surgery-and-Diabetes-Obesity We know that obesity and diabetes are closely related. In fact about 85% of type 2 diabetics are obese. One option to help lose weight is weight loss surgery and weight loss surgery or bariatric surgery has been shown to positively affect diabetes and in many cases to actually cure diabetes in some people. When we talk about weight loss surgery, we're talking about things like the gastric band, the gastric sleeve or the gastric bypass. So with all of these surgeries you lose weight, and after you lose weight, your sugars are usually better controlled. The exciting thing about the sleeve gastrectomy or gastric sleeve and the gastric bypass surgeries, in particular, are that after you have these surgeries the hormonal environment in your body is changed, such that your body is better able to handle sugars. For example, I have patients that are type 2 diabetic that are on insulin and then have gastric bypass, say. Some of these patients actually leave the hospital and never need their insulin again. So clearly, the weight loss surgery is curing their diabetes, not just from weight loss because they're not losing 100 pounds overnight, but it's because of the hormonal changes that happen in their body. Studies have been published by the Cleveland Clinic, as well as Cornell comparing the difference between weight loss surgery and medication alone for the treatment of diabetes. And I believe the results were actually published on the front page of the New York Times, and these studies showed that weight loss surgery, actually had better results in controlling diabetes than medication alone. So if you are obese and you do have type 2 diabetes, speak with your doctor because maybe weight loss surgery is an option for you.

Religions prescribe periods of fasting. Ancient Greeks did it for mental clarity. In the last 50 years there has been a strong move against fasting. 03:06 Nothing Wrong with Fasting: Dr. Fung investigated fasting and found that fasting had a great many benefits. Periodic fasting allows your body to burn off fat. Dr. Fung uses it with all of his overweight patients. Blood sugar medications need to be monitored closely once implementing fasting, or blood sugar could go too low.05:25 Hypoglycemia: If you are taking blood sugar meds, you may become hypoglycemic. 09:42 Muscle Loss and Fasting: Starvation mode and muscle loss are two of the many myths. Hypoglycemia is not a big concern unless you are taking blood sugar meds. As you fast, you will consume glycogen. 16:53 Hormones of Fasting: Fasting increases growth hormone. It increases noradrenaline. These are counter regulatory hormones, which counter the effect of insulin. Insulin lowers blood glucose. 22:04 Three Day a Week Fast: Dr. Fung does 24 hour fasts. 26:32 Anti-Aging Benefits: Skin is protein, so skin may alter with intermittent fasting. During the process of fasting, you get rid of old cells as part of renovation. 28:44 Autophagy: mTOR is a major regulator of autophagy. Protein turns off autophagy. mTOR is a nutrient sensor, sensing protein. 33:37 Salt and Fasting: One reason why Dr. Fung’s patients use bone broth during a fast is for salt intake. 35:49 Kidney Function: 37:07 Hormone Impacts: The main hormone affected by fasting is insulin. 42:17 Cortisol and Fasting: Cortisol does rise with fasting. It is part of the counter regulatory hormones. 43:14 Noradrenaline & Fasting 48:09 Calories: Calories have nothing to do with weight loss. Fasting is about changing your hormones. 49:50 Nutrient Changes in the 1950s: There was little obesity. People ate cookies, white bread and ice cream. You ate within a 10 hour window. 54:51 Bullet Proof Coffee/Fat Fasting: Many of the benefits of fasting come from reducing insulin. Pure fat has almost no insulin effect. 56:26 Ketogenic Diet: Intermittent fasting and ketogenic diet are along the same spectrum, close cousins. The ultra-low carb ketogenic diet lowers insulin. Low carb diet delivers 71% of the insulin lowering of fasting. 01:00:39 Dr. Fung’s Morning Routine: 01:03:45 Dr. Fung’s Favorite Nutrient: 01:07:54 Dr. Fung’s Elevator Pitch: We need to teach people about the therapeutic value of fasting. It has the potential to change the entire health system of the world. Most of what we do is treat diabetes, high blood pressure and all of the downstream issues. All of this can be taken care of for free. We need to spread the knowledge of how to do it.

The terms gastric bypass and lap-band are sometimes used interchangeably, but are very different procedures. Gastric bypass is a major surgery, while lap-band, although it is a surgery, can be done thru the laparoscope, and can be reversed easily. One major difference was an unexpected one. Gastric bypass stimulates the gut to release a hormone called GLP-1, which aides in weight loss by delaying gastric emptying and triggering a feeling of satiety.

http://bariatricmexicosurgery.com If you are considering having weight loss surgery in Mexico, you probably have heard or read many of the prevailing myths about what bariatric surgery is or what your life after surgery will be like. Given the relatively poor outcomes associated with traditional approaches for treating obesity that include diet programs, behavioral modification, and pharmacotherapy, weight loss surgical procedures are a safe and effective option for those who meet selection criteria. Here are some common myths and misconceptions and the correct answers to them. Misconception 1: Weight loss surgery is cosmetic surgery or a cop-out. Heavy individuals simply need to go on a strict diet. This is not so. Science indicates that severe obesity is not self-inflicted or due to a lack of motivation. The ability to maintain long-term weight loss is almost impossible without bariatric procedures. Severely obese individuals are resistant to long-term weight-loss via diet and exercise. National Institutes of Health studies show that exercise, diet and behavior modifications fail at least 95% of the time. One of the reasons that bariatric procedures work is they cause biological changes that help reduce energy intake in the form of food and beverages resulting from anatomical changes to the stomach and digestive system that restrict food intake or cause malabsorption of nutrients (less nutrients get absorbed). Bariatric surgery also increases the production of certain hormones that reduce hunger and enhance the feeling of satiety (feeling full), while also reducing the production of ghrelin, the hunger-producing hormone. In these ways, bariatric surgery helps produce long-term weight loss. Misconception 2: Only individuals who weigh more than 300 pounds can have weight loss surgery. This is not necessarily true. One of the primary factors that qualify patients for bariatric surgery is body mass index, commonly known as BMI, the ratio of weight to height that also corresponds to risk calculations associated with obesity. Almost everyone with a BMI of more than 40 is considered a candidate. If your BMI is greater than 35 and you have been diagnosed with serious medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or sleep apnea, you will also be a likely candidate. Studies from the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health recommend that doctors factor in personal heal conditions in addition to your BMI, so even if it’s less than 35, you may still qualify. Misconception 3: After surgery you’ll lose weight and be able to eat anything you want. Nothing could be further from the truth. Weight loss surgery patients must follow a specific diet that progresses from clear liquids to full liquids and soft foods before reaching a so-called normal diet. Although you will be able to eat a variety of foods, portions will be smaller and there will be an emphasis on consuming protein. A return to grazing and other bad habits will cause weight gain. Misconception 4: You have a greater risk of dying from weight loss surgery than dying from obesity. Not so. Any surgery has associated risks, but as your body increases in size, so do your chances of dying from health-related complications. Mortality rates from many obesity-related diseases drop dramatically as you shed pounds.

Bariatric patients now have another option for weight loss surgery called gastric sleeve, or sleeve gastrectomy. The procedure reduces the size of the stomach by converting the stomach into a narrow tube. The new stomach is much smaller and produces less of the hormone (ghrelin) that causes hunger.

Post Op Hair Loss | Blossom Bariatrics | Las Vegas I get a lot of questions about hair loss post bariatric surgery and there's many reasons why hair loss can happen. Now "can" is the word to remember. It doesn't always happen, but there are some things to take into consideration if you find that your hair is thinning or you do lose some hair after your weight loss surgery. The first thing that can attribute to hair loss would be hormonal imbalances. Oftentimes, too little testosterone and too much estrogen, called estrogen dominance, can result in thinning hair or hair loss. Something else that you may want to consider is thyroid dysfunction or hypothyroidism. This is very important and is usually the key factor in hair loss, even in folks who have not had bariatric surgery. So hypothyroidism means low thyroid hormones and it's very important to get those levels tested by a blood test. So please make sure that you have optimal levels of thyroid hormone production in your body. Folks who experience hypothyroidism always feel a little bit chilly, have cold hands, cold feet all the time, and the corner of your eyebrows--either there's thinning or they're completely falling out. That's a dead giveaway. Low iron or iron deficiency or anemia can be tested from your primary care doctor with a simple lab test. Low iron can contribute to hair loss as well as low B12. So make sure to get tested for your B12 levels and your iron levels in your blood. Folks struggling with H Pylori, that can lower your B12 levels and lower your iron levels too. So again, make sure you get tested for H Pylori. Another contributing factor for hair loss would be bariatric weight loss surgery. Right after surgery, the shock of eating less food and possibly getting less nutrients can tell your body "Whoa, wait a minute. Stop hair growth. It's not important to me. I need to make sure that every other vital organ gets the nutrients it needs." Also take into consideration that it depends on where you're at in your normal hair growth cycle. If you have surgery within that little time frame it can actually slow the new hair growth until your body senses it's getting the nutrients it needs again. To prevent nutrient deficiency post weight loss surgery make sure you get your protein, your whey protein or your plant-based protein drinks. You never stop those if you're concerned about hair loss. Protein contains an amino acid called ProLine. ProLine has been shown to build collagen and collagen is one of the main components of hair growth and hairs. So make sure you're getting all the protein you need to get it in every single day, at least 60-80 grams. Also, take your supplements. Never, ever, ever, do not take your supplements. So for instance, your multivitamin will have adequate amounts of B vitamins, which are key for hair growth, particularly B12 and biotin. Hair growth supplements contain methylcobalamin B12, biotin, zinc. Zinc is important for hair growth as well and maybe some silica, which is a mineral that aids in tissue growth. Thanks for watching. Vitamin D3 Deficiency and Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery Patients | http://www.blossombariatrics.com | 702-904-8011 Hello. This is Michelle Phelan, nutritionist at Blossom Bariatrics, where expertise meets true compassion. We're always here for you before, during, and after your weight loss surgery procedure--because it's the after that's the most important part. Today we're going to talk about Vitamin D3 deficiency. As many as 91% of bariatric patients can become deficient in Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is so important for many bodily functions, but the most important one is the absorption of your calcium. Calcium cannot be absorbed properly without adequate amounts of D3. The more absorbable and active form of Vitamin D is actually D3. Many of the prescriptions out there are actually the synthetic version which is D2, and less active and harder to absorb. So, always look, folks, for D3. You'll find them in a gel cap or liquid form and this format is actually more preferable for absorption for all bariatric patients. You can go upwards of 5,000 to 10,000 International Units (IU) of Vitamin D3 a day. And, if you're under the care of your physician, you can definitely utilize what your physician tells you; but just know you can keep around 5,000 to 10,000 IUs a day to make sure that you have adequate amounts of Vitamin D3 in your system--and, of course, this is daily. For those of you that get a lot of sun every day, please keep this in mind: Vitamin D3 can be absorbed on your skin. In fact, that's actually the best way for D3 to be absorbed and synthesized into your body. But for those of you that wear sun block on a regular basis, you're not synthesizing your D3 from the sunshine. So, I always tell my patients, "Get at least 15 minutes a day in the sun without sun block, and you're sure to get your D3 the natural way through sunshine." Thank you for joining me. Don't forget to check us out on our website www.blossombariatrics.com for any additional information or questions that you may have. Thank you and have a very healthy day. REVISION BARIATRIC SURGERY (REVISION TO SADI) - MR. SRINADH’S REVIEW IN ENGLISH - DR. V. AMAR, www.drVamar.com Mr. Srinadh used to weigh 147 kg. He underwent sleeve gastrectomy elsewhere in 2009. He lost 25 kg. But regained weight to 164 kg. On 16th Mar 2016, I performed revision bariatric surgery, Laparoscopic Single Anastomosis Duodeno-ileal Bypass (SADI) on him. On 05 Oct 2017, his weight was 81 kg, still losing. He is happy, healthy and fit. Weight loss after bariatric surgery is mainly due to hormonal changes. Role of food restriction or mal-absorpiton is secondary. Sleeve gastrectomy is the most commonly performed obesity surgery worldwide. But significant number of individuals regain weight, even after properly performed gastric sleeve surgery. This is mainly due to hormonal adaptation. These individuals need addition of some form of 'ileal diversion’ to 'gastric sleeve' as a 'revision bariatric surgery'. This revision is necessary to restore significant hormonal changes needed to induce weight loss again and make that weight loss permanent. ‘Single anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass’ (SADI) is one of the best revision surgeries which can induce weight loss again. - Dr. V. reference from ... www.obesitysurgery.com.hk/gastric-sleeve.html Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy, Want to have a better control of eating volume without the need to avoid various foods? Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, a restrictive minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, is the most widely performed weight loss surgery in Asia. By reducing the stomach size, patients will feel a sense of fullness much earlier, and thereby substantially reducing the volume intake. Besides more effective weight loss, this surgery is effective in diabetic treatment with a remission rate of almost 70%. This surgery can significantly suppress the secretion of Ghrelin -- a powerful appetite stimulating hormone. Patients recover quickly from surgery and are able to return to their daily activities in a short period of time. In order to achieve your target body weight, patients will have regular follow up with Dr. Wong and his team of allied health specialist (including dietitian and physiotherapist). Procedure of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy This surgery is indicated for patients with BMI over 30. Two weeks prior to surgery you are instructed to have only fluid diet and milk supplements. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Wong will make 4-5 small (1-1.5cm) incisions and remove 70-80% of the stomach in order to create a 'banana' shaped stomach. The entire procedure last for about one and half hours and patients will be discharged from hospital 3-4 days after surgery. After your surgery, fluid and congee diet must be maintained within the first month in order to allow for good wound healing. After then, a "new" normal diet can be resumed. All patients must follow dietitians' advise to ensure effective weight loss. Benefits of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy •Obvious weight loss: ~70-80% of the stomach will be removed thus significantly reduce stomach volume and induce a much earlier sense of satiety. •Effective diabetic control: with the reduced stomach volume and changes in hormones, such as increasing glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) for diabetes treatment that is stimulated by faster stomach emptying. •Reduced appetite: There is an immediate reduction in levels of the appetite stimulating hormone -- Ghrelin, thus significantly reduce patient's hunger sensation and appetite.

Joyce Davidson of Danvers is a woman who knows her own mind. A straight shooter who works as a traffic-control manager for U-Haul, she’s used to being in charge. So when she was confronted with a serious health crisis that she couldn’t manage on her own, she faced a difficult choice. Last winter, Davidson was diagnosed with intracranial hypertension, a condition brought on by increased pressure on the brain that can lead to severe headaches and vision loss. As is often true in such cases, Davidson’s weight was an exacerbating factor. To address her condition, Davidson was presented with two options: surgery to insert a shunt into her brain to relieve the pressure or significant weight loss. Because intense physical activity can aggravate the symptoms of intracranial hypertension, she couldn’t rely on exercise to lose weight as she had done in the past. “I was 32 years old and didn’t want brain surgery,” Davidson recalls. “I had thought about weight-loss surgery in the past, and now it seemed like the right choice at the right time.” Davidson was referred to the NSMC Surgical Weight Loss Program, the largest and most successful program of its kind on the North Shore. She began as all potential patients do with an information session that outlined the pros and cons of weight-loss surgery and provided an overview of various procedures. Patients who opt for surgery participate in an extensive evaluation process and post-operative program, including nutrition, wellness and exercise counseling, ongoing education and support-group sessions. “There is no single solution for weight-loss patients,” says Jaime Rivera, M.D., co-director of the NSMC Surgical Weight Loss Program. “Our program educates patients so that they can make informed decisions that suit their individual situations and goals.” In consultation with Dr. Rivera, Davidson opted for gastric-sleeve surgery, during which 75 to 80 percent of the stomach is removed and the remaining portion is turned into a skinny tube. The smaller size and shape of the stomach help limit portion size and calorie intake. Gastric-sleeve surgery is also reported to affect the hormones that control appetite, which can further contribute to weight loss. Within a week of her surgery last April, Davidson was up and walking. Two weeks later, she was exercising. Three months later, she and her wife, Ember, completed a 12-mile hike in the White Mountains. Today, Davidson has lost more than 100 pounds, works out and plays basketball regularly and feels better than she has in years. Along with her own self-motivation, she credits much of her success to the support she’s received at home and through the Surgical Weight Loss Program. “I can’t say enough about Dr. Rivera and his team,” she says. “They are forthcoming and honest, and I can always count on them whenever I have a question. I couldn’t imagine doing this without them.” “Support is the cornerstone of our program,” says Dr. Rivera. “It starts on day one and continues for at least five years.” Nearly a year after surgery, Davidson is happy with her decision. She was promoted at work, is working toward her bachelor’s degree and says her marriage is stronger than ever. “The change in my life is real,” she says. “The circumstances may not have been ideal when this journey began, but it’s been a win in every way since.” http://nsmcphysicians.partners.org/Details/545?LastName=rivera&Index=1 http://nsmcweightloss.org/
