How to Get the Most out of Vitamin Supplements- Thomas DeLauer: When should you take your vitamins? To learn more about how I can help you, head to http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Many factors play a role on how available vitamins and supplements are when you take them. Fat-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamins A, D, E and K- These are stored in the liver and fat stores in your body, so you do not need to consume these every day. They are easy to get from food as they are not easily broken down by heat when cooking. These are the most important vitamins to eat with food, as the name implies, they are only absorbed and used by the body in the presence of fat. These vitamins dissolve in fat and are then delivered to the bloodstream for use in the body. Not much fat is needed, but if taking a supplement, or even eating fruits and veggies, but sure to have some fat added. If you make a healthy smoothie, add some almond butter or you favorite oil, such as macadamia nut oil. When eating salads, do not use fat-free salad dressings! Olive oil and lemon juice are great options. Be careful if you supplement these vitamins and be sure to check with your doctor if you feel you may need to do so. These vitamins are only needed in small quantities and can build up to a dangerous level if too many are taken. Vitamin D is the main fat-soluble vitamin in the US where deficiencies are common. This is due to inadequate exposure to sunlight. Fortified foods and supplements can help. Try to obtain 5-15 minutes of direct sunlight twice per week to avoid a deficiency, and if this is not possible then talk to your doctor about supplementation. Water-Soluble Vitamins: Vitamin C and B-complex vitamins are water soluble vitamins that you need to be sure to include in your diet daily. Unlike fat-soluble vitamins, these vitamins are not stored in your adipose tissue or liver and are in essence washed from your body daily. Food storage and preparation are important when making sure to get sufficient quantities of these vitamins. Deficiencies are uncommon, however vegans do not have a natural source of vitamin B12 and usually need to supplement. While deficiencies are not common, it is still important to consume daily for bodily functioning. As these vitamins dissolve in water, you do not need to take these with foods, although you can if you want to. Minerals: Calcium and Magnesium (2,4) - These are best taken with food and good to take at night. Calcium is linked to improved sleep due to its muscle relaxing abilities and magnesium has calming effects on the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. Zinc (2,4) - Take with or after meals to avoid stomach upset. Do not take with dairy as calcium hampers absorption. Also avoid taking with iron as large quantities of iron can also hurt your body’s ability to absorb zinc. Avoid taking excess zinc, which can lead to anemia through suppression of copper absorption. Iron (4) - Best to take on an empty stomach. Avoid taking with zinc, calcium and vitamin E as these can decrease absorption. If you have a sensitive stomach you may not do well when taking iron on an empty stomach. If so, take with a light meal. Probiotics (4) - Best to take 30 minutes before a meal as this is when digestive enzymes, bile salts and stomach acid are at low levels. These levels peak after a meal, so this is the worst time to take a probiotic. Fiber (2) - Be sure to separate taking fiber from other nutritional supplements as fiber can hamper mineral absorption. Fish Oil (4) – Fish Oil is best to take with food and with your multivitamin, or other fat-soluble vitamins, if you take them. The fat in the food that you eat can help to aid in digestion and absorption. As fats take a long time for your body to digest, it is best not to take fish oil pills or eat a fatty meal pre-workout. This can cause digestive upset. Multivitamins: As these contain both water- and fat-soluble vitamins, take with plenty of water and some food with fat in it, but try not to take with dairy as this can reduce your absorption of zinc. Must Know: Why You Need to Stay Away From These Vitamins Multivitamin and mineral supplements became available in the 1940s, and Americans actively use them ever since. Nowadays, millions of people use supplements in order to strengthen their health and avoid nutrient deficiencies. Most people take a balanced combination of essential vitamins and minerals in the form of a multivitamin, such as Centrum vitamins. Multivitamins accounted for 40 percent of all supplement purchases, which is $5.7 billion out of the $37 billion in supplement sales in 2014 alone. Centrum vitamins, by Pfizer, are the best-selling multivitamins in the country. Their produces is the biggest pharmaceutical company worldwide, which deals mainly in manufactured chemicals. Yet, the company is also known due to the numerous legal battles, frauds, and controversy. It was recently threatened to be sued over false claims about Centrum vitamins in 2012 by the consumer watchdog group Center for Science in the Public Interest. Eventually, the company had to pull claims about breast and colon health. Moreover, it lacks regulation, specificity, and even standards. Namely, the multivitamins ask for no set standards or levels. Yet, it does what all big corporations regularly do: it pays large sums of money for advertising their chemically and synthetically enhanced supplements which can, in fact, do more harm than good. Apparently, even though these multivitamins are advertised to boost immunity and kick your metabolism they actually contain multiple additives which can be harmful or toxic to your body. Centrum vitamins contain at least 3 preservatives and several color additives, along with many toxic and even carcinogenic chemicals and additives. Here is a list of their dangerous ingredients: -Calcium Carbonate — This compound is found in rocks, shells, and even pearls. It is sometimes used to raise calcium levels in the body; but has been related to strokes and heart disease, especially in the elderly. Studies have also linked it to heart issues and myocardial infarction. -Polyethylene Glycol — It is often used in the manufacturing of coal-burning plants, rocket fuel, and over-the-counter laxatives. It might lead to kidney damage, hives and other allergic reactions, esophageal bleeding, tears, and autism. In children, it might cause encopresis, which is a continuous leakage of semi-formed feces. -Hydrogenated Oil — Hydrogenated oils quickly become toxic when processed under extreme heat, atmospheres of pressure and injections of metals. Their consumption clogs the arteries, leading to massive heart and arterial issues, and also results in producing cholesterol to bandage artery walls which have been affected. Due to the vascular issues, it affects the brain and causes Alzheimer’s and ADHD. -Food Dye Yellow 6 — This is a toxic food dye which is a carcinogen and might result in allergies, tumors on the kidneys and testes, and chromosomal damage. It might also cause ADHD, hyperactivity, and restlessness. -GMO Corn Starch — It has multiple adverse effects on the body and affects the detoxifying organs such as the liver and kidneys, but also damages the spleen, heart, and adrenal glands. Its another side effect is Hepatorenal Toxicity, which leads to kidney failure and is typically fatal. -Titanium Dioxide — It has been found to be potentially carcinogenic to humans. It’s included in various products as a whitening agent, like in ink, paper, paints, and even cosmetics and toothpaste. Even though it has been previously considered to be safe by the FDA, it has been recently found to cause lung cancer in rats. What is even more disturbing is that the Centrum vitamins for children are even more dangerous, as they include the following hazardous additives: -Cupric Oxide — This copper mineral is known to be dangerous in Europe. It causes kidney disease and childhood cirrhosis, and it is also dangerous to the environment. -Artificial Sweeteners (Aspartame) — As soon as it is ingested, this carcinogenic sweetener is converted to formaldehyde and methanol, and causes 40 adverse side effects, including birth defects, ADD, cancer, lupus, multiple sclerosis and more. -Zinc Oxide — In Europe, it is considered to be harmful, and leads to diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach and more. -Lactose (Milk Sugar) — Lactose makes up 2-8 % of the milk by weight. Specific enzymes in the stomach break it down, leading to lactose intolerance, and symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, cramping, upset stomach, and nausea. With that said supplements can be used to take advantage of that tiny extra push that they can give you. The problem that I hope to alleviate for you today is that there are tons of supplements out there while really there are only a couple of them that actually work. The first supplement that can help and is probably the most widely used supplement is protein powder. It may be hard for you to get enough protein from your diet and supplementing with protein powder can definitely help you hit your Macros. It's also great to have after a workout and when you're on the go. There are so many different types of protein that I have a whole video specifically about protein powders that I'll link up at the end. But I really like whey protein because it's cheap it tastes good and your body is very efficient with it. My favorite brand is Optimum Nutrition 100% gold standard whey isolate. If you're lactose intolerant consider an egg-based protein powder instead. The Next supplement that works very well is creatine. Different people will experience different results with different types of creatine and there are a lot of different types. Monohydrate is pretty much the most basic form of creatine, probably the cheapest, and it happens to be the most studied. Creatine monohydrate has proven itself in study after study so it's a pretty safe bet to start with. There are many other types like kre akalybn for example that claim to reduce bloating and claim to eliminate the need to cycle off of creatine. However not one type of creatine has the kind of backing with scientific evidence that monohydrate has. My favorite creatine brand is probably the cheapest one. It's just plain Monohydrate from Now sports. I used to take cell tech hardcore when I used to bulk and it would always help me put on some weight. Garnish it with crushed almonds & cashew nuts Recipe 2: Chicken stuffed eggs 1. Add 1 cup boiled & shredded chicken in a food processor 2. Add salt and pepper to it 3. Now pulse it twice in order to finely mince it 4. Leave it as is for a while 5. Add 1 tbsp mayonnaise in a bowl 6. Add 2 tsp finely chopped onion in this 7. Also add 1 tsp coriander leaves 8. Then add 1 tsp lemon juice 9. Mix all these ingredients well 10. Now, remove the minced chicken and add it to this mixture 11. Next, take 2 hard-boiled eggs 12. Cut them in half and remove their yolks 13. Using a spoon, fill the egg whites with the prepared chicken mixture 14. Key points: The nutrition label on your omega 3 fish oil supplement can be misleading if you're not sure what you're looking for. The two main compounds we're looking for are EPA and DHA. They stand for for eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. And the standard capsule of an Omega 3 supplement has only about 300 mg of these 2 combined. The effective dose for total EPA/DHA intake is 1.8-3.0 grams per day. That's between 6 to 10 of standard capsules, and the nutrition label will often say that you only need 1 or 2 per day. Higher concentration supplements are also available, and they usually come at a higher price point. The dosage would be split at least morning and evening (taken with meals). Why take omega 3? "If there is a single nutrient that is almost impossible to achieve adequate amounts of with the modern diet (outside of the handful of people who eat a lot of fatty fish), it’s the w-3 fish oils. In a very real sense, fish oils ‘do everything’ and impact on not only overall health but help to control inflammation, promote fat oxidation, inhibit fat storage and a host of others. It’s a list of benefits that seems almost too good to be true but the research is there. Due to their general unavailability in the food supply, supplementation is almost necessary and both pills (containing varying amounts of the active EPA/DHA) and liquids are available. Your body uses all of these for a range of metabolic processes, from digestion to proper nerve function. There are two types: water-soluble and fat-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve in water and then are easily absorbed by the gut. The body uses what it needs and then the kidneys flush out the excess. This is why you need a constant supply of these vitamins from your diet. Fat-soluble vitamins are retained in the body and therefore can be used later, and so don't need constant replenishing. This is because fat-soluble vitamins are easily stored in the liver and fatty tissues. If you eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet, you normally can get all the vitamins you need. Your body can also make two of them...Vitamins D and K. If someone isn't able to get enough of a certain vitamin from food, a dietary supplement or multivitamin might be recommended. Vegetarians, for example, often need to take extra B12. There are also certain groups with increased nutritional needs. For example, women with heavy periods need more iron. Women who are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant also benefit from taking folic acid and other prenatal vitamins. For a long time, vitamin deficiency diseases, like scurvy and rickets, were common. Then when nutritious food became more plentiful, research shifted to investigating whether large quantities of vitamins might be able to fend off certain diseases. But just because someone gets a definitive disease due to a serious lack of a particular vitamin doesn't mean that consuming more than the Recommended Daily Allowance can prevent a range of diseases. Remember when megadoses of Vitamin C were thought to be a cure-all for everything from colds to cancer? Then Vitamin E was in the spotlight because of a possible link to Alzheimer's and heart disease. Even the B's had their moment of fame. And now it's D. But follow-up studies haven't shown any conclusive preventive benefit to megadosing. And in some cases, taking too much can be harmful. But that shouldn't be so surprising. Our bodies are complex....and so it makes sense that the nutrients needed interact in really complicated ways. We also now understand that just because someone swallows a vitamin pill, that doesn't mean it's bioavailable, meaning it's in a form our body can easily use. Real foods have many components, and it's both the combination of various foods and of the components within them that helps our bodies absorb what we need in the quantities we need. And when you eat whole foods, you get a lot of other essentials, too. An orange, for example, provides not only vitamin C, but also beta carotene, calcium, fiber and other nutrients. Hi guys welcome back to my channel. Today I am going to share with you guys on how to grow your nails really fast and long very easily in just 10 days. Ok so the process is divided into 2 simple steps. The first step is to make a nail soaking solution for which you will need Ingredients half a lemon 1 Teaspoon extra virgin Olive oil 1 teaspoon salt and half a bowl of warm water. Let me show you guys how to make it. Take half a bowl of warm water,not hot but warm water squeeze half a lemon into it and then add 1 teaspoon olive oil into it and finally add 1 teaspoon of salt as well. Stir the mixture very well. Keep this aside and now let’s make the cuticle oil which is our 2nd step. For this you will only need 2 simple ingredients that is 1 teaspoon olive oil 2 vitamin E capsules a clean container to store in the mixture. Take the clean container and fill it with 1 teaspoon olive oil and then cut open 2 vitamin E capsules and add it into the container as well. Mix everything together. You can keep this in room temperature for more than 3 months. Now it’s time to apply. I am going to take you all from Day 1 to Day 10 of my nail growth journey. Ok so let’s start with Day 1. You can see that my nails are really short. So basically What you need to do is just soak your nails in the soaking solution which we made earlier for around 30 mins. Also gently massage your nail while it’s in the solution. Lemon contains vitamin C that is essential for nail growth. Also, it helps treat yellow nails and gives your nails a nice shine. Salt softens cuticles and skin and strengthens nails. It also helps to to fight the bacteria preventing nail growth. So after 30 minutes just wipe your hands and fingers with a clean towel. You need not have to wash it off. Now comes the second step which is apply the cuticle oil. You can apply the apply using a bud or a cotton swab. I would say not to dip your fingers inside it as it can build up bacteria. Massage your nails very well in a circular motion for about 5 to 10 mins. To promote nail growth, it is essential to keep your nails well moisturized. Olive oil is the best when it comes to nail care. L-Carnitine is So Much More Than Just Fat Loss! I'm all about boosting the body, the brain, and business, and L-Carnitine does just that. Learn more about my thought process at http://www.ThomasDeLauer.com Acetyl-L-carnitine is an antioxidant and amino acid naturally produced in the body and is one of many forms of carnitine. Carnitines help shuttle fat to mitochondria to be burned to produce energy. They also help to shuttle the waste products away during the process. Different carnitines have different functions. Acetyl-L-carnitine is mainly used for brain health purposes as it is able to pass through the blood-brain barrier due to the acetyl group. Acetyl-l-carnitine is used for a wide variety of disorders regarding brain health: Alzheimer’s, depression, age-related memory loss, thinking problems due to Lyme Disease and alcoholism, Down syndrome, nerve pain, etc. It is also used in men for low testosterone and infertility. Acetyl-L-Carnitine vs L-Carnitine, and Fat Loss: The body can convert acetyl-L-carnitine to L-carnitine and visa / versa. Do not substitute one for the others. Benefits are based on the kind of carnitine that you take. L-Carnitine is primarily taken for fat loss as it helps to mobilize stored fat and move it to the mitochondria for use as energy. 95% of the carnitine in the body is found in skeletal muscles. By increasing muscle carnitine concentration you increase muscle fat oxidation, thus burning more stored fat rather than glucose. Until recently, studies did not support that increased dietary carnitine would lead to increased muscle carnitine concentration. A 2011 study in The Journal of Physiology found that after 6 months of L-carnitine feeding combined with carbohydrate consumption led to a 21% increase in muscle carnitine content. This study further showed that this increase had an effect of muscle metabolism during exercise. Following low intensity exercise it was found that less muscle glycogen was used. There was no measure of lipid oxidation, but it follows theoretic models that lipid metabolism would take the place of the glucose metabolism. The study also found an increased level of muscle lactate following high intensity exercise. What was very exciting was the finding of a performance enhancement: work output was increased by 11% during a 30 minute trial. Further studies are needed - complication with how long studies need to be held to see an impact of carnitine supplementation. How it Helps Brain Function: Mitochondria are the energy power plants of the body and brain, and their decay has been linked to many age related diseases. Supplementation may help mitochondria produce energy in tissues like the brain. One study fed rats acetyl-L-carnitine - reversed age-related declines in L-carnitine levels and also reversed some age-related changes in liver mitochondrial function. Another study found that the supplementation of acetyl-L-carnitine and alpha lipoic acid led to memory improvement, reduced oxidative stress and improved mitochondrial energy metabolism. It is also used to synthesise acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Acetylcholine has been shown to boost memory. Antioxidant and anti-Inflammatory agent properties: A 2010 study on alcohol induced oxidative damage in the brain found that acetyl-L-carnitine served as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Oxidative damage and inflammation in the brain are known to cause injury in the brain. Tips: Take acetyl-L-carnitine in the morning to promote healthy brain functioning.Pair with alpha lipoic acid, an antioxidant that is known to rid the brain of free radicals. References: 1.
