This is an entertaining instructional video that elementary school teachers can show to their students to help them better understand the process of revising. Viewers will learn what revising means, the goals of revising, how to revise, and how revising differs from editing. The video features two students simulating a typical day in the classroom, and they are working on a Writing Workshop project. I filmed the video with these children last summer and debuted it in the classroom this Fall. Watching the two kids in the video work together to revise a piece of writing had a wonderful effect on my students' ability to cooperate, listen to one another's suggestions, use their time well, and make valuable changes to their initial drafts.

How do you show students that revision is more than a classroom exercise to please the teacher? Take them into the real world of writing for publication. In Real Revision, award-winning author and teacher Kate Messner demystifies the revision process for teachers and students alike and provides tried-and-true revision strategies, field tested by students'''' favorite authors. Kate takes us on a behind-the-scenes look at how more than thirty-five authors—including Julie Berry, Watt Key, Loree Griffin Burns , Jane Yolen, Lisa Schroeder, Suzanne Selfors, Eric Luper, Danette Haworth, and Kathi Appelt—revise their works, often many times over, before they appear on library and bookstore shelves. Using successful strategies from her own classroom, Kate teaches how authors use research, brainstorming, and planning as revision tools; how they revise to add detail and make characters stronger; and how students can use those same techniques for all kinds of writing in the classroom. Real Revision features dozens of reproducible "mentor author" pages, with quotes from the authors about their revision processes, and includes related classroom-ready activities. For any teacher who wants to produce strong real-world writers, Real Revision will infuse the classroom with new energy as students use mentor authors as models for their own revision and writing.

This writing workshop lesson was adapted from the 1st grade UOS Session 12: Partners Work Together to Give Writing Checkups! The 1st graders are getting ready to celebrate their opinion pieces this week and are revising and editing their work to prepare for the celebration. The partnership work directly supports the Common Core Language Standards (with editing/conventions) and the Speaking and Listening standards which ask students to participate in collaborative conversations and clarify something that is not understood. I chose to model this work with my own demonstration piece which contained many of the similar mistakes you would find in your student's work. My teaching point was to show writers "an important part of this process is to be thorough, moving down the page and across the piece, checking that each and every part is the best it can be- teaching young writers to slow down rather than hastily marking off their editing checklist." (pg. 91 Session 12) I did not state each part of the mini-lesson with the exact wording from Lucy Calkins- but I hope each part of the mini-lesson is noticeable with my transitions. Connection: A story about going to the doctor's office for a thorough checkup and connecting how thorough the doctor was to that of a writing checklist/partner. Teaching Point: Students can be writing doctors and help their partners by...using an editing checklist to make sure your partner's piece is easy to read and the best it can be. Teach: Reviewing the teacher's opinion writing using the checklist/chart "Writers Edit and Fix Mistakes" or "How Did I Make My Writing Easy to Read?" (chart from the unit) Providing a demonstration of what I would like them to try next. Active Engagement: Students get a chance to practice with a partner using the editing checklist. Link: Remember to be like a writing doctor and go part by part with the editing checklist to make sure your work or your partner's work is the best it can be!

Write Time is the Ziptales (www.ziptales.com) area devoted to teaching writing. It can be found by going to the Extending Literacy Library. Write Time offers explicit teaching of how to write all the major text types. How to Write Instructions starts by modelling the process involved in making a paper aeroplane. The lesson then goes on to show how you need to start with the ingredients, or contents. The actual instructions are like a series of steps that people have to take. This concept is shown as a set of stepping stones. The steps needed to be numbered, in sequence. A short discussion follows about how complex instructions can be very difficult to create in words alone. You normally need both words and pictures. These two key tools are illustrated clearly. The idea of staged steps is then modelled again. We explain that the language in instructions needs to be as simple as possible. The lesson ends with a useful summing up of all the major points.
