Sam Brownback, the Republican Governor of Kansas, was going to do a grand experiment in Kansas. He implemented trickle-down economics by slashing taxes on the rich to "stimulate the economy." Well nothing was stimulated, and now Kansas is suffering from cuts in education, highways and infrastructure, and more. The state added almost no new jobs. Only the rich gained. Cenk Uygur, host of The Young Turks, breaks it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
"For over five years now, Kansas has served as an economic policy experiment for anti-tax, small-government conservatives. Their lab work is costing the state hundreds of millions of dollars, crippling public service budgets, and making life harder for low-income families without reducing the state’s poverty rate at all.
With his political star beginning to tarnish, Gov. Sam Brownback (R) came to Washington on Wednesday to discuss his poverty policies at the conservative American Enterprise Institute. At one point, the embattled governor justified his policy of forcing people off of food stamps if they can’t find a job by likening low-income and jobless people to lazy college students.
The event was convened around a policy he pioneered: Reinstating a rigid 20-hour-per-week work requirement that federal law allowed him to waive because unemployment was still high at the time in his state. The rules are duplicative — federal law requires the able-bodied adults targeted by the move to accept reasonable job offers at all times, even when a weekly work-hours waiver is in place — and run counter to a lot of policy thinking about how best to get jobless food stamps recipients back to work."*

the scary thing about the conservative walking dead braindead zombie movement in america is that they will re-elect their zombie leader even after they bring widespread poverty to the state. we must take this to mean that zombies are staunchly opposed to wealth, prosperity, and civilized societies. let's bring back the neolithic era!!!
Hey KANSAS hows that trickle-down working for you ,make sure you stay the course and re elect this paragon of retardigan policy, glad to see you support SOCIALISM FOR THE RICH youll have to pay and pay and pay till they suck you dry and then thell come for more ,hows the winning working for you?just asking!
I am glad the republican got their wish and conducted the Kansas experiment and the Wisconsin trial. Nay says have to long stood in the way of "Trickle down economics." Been fighting it since the 1970s under Reagan. People who vote republican should be allowed to live the Republican dream.
Perfect example of the left-wing bias in media. IL and CT are both on the brink of BK they are so broke and horribly managed, but because they are blue states -- not going to hear them being criticized.
You Liberals don't understand anything about Economics and Trickles Down Economy.
Let me explain to you Liberals how trickles down economy works:
The top 1% gets a major tax break, the money they get from the tax break makes them happy. That money then goes into funding more Republicans to continue pushing for more tax break. More tax break means more funding for Republicans. It goes around in a circle like the wheels on the bus goes round and round. The bus is the economy and the wheel drives the bus.
Unlike you Liberals who always questioning everything, we Republicans supporters are people of faith, so we believe everything that is said by any Republicans, we believe them more than actual facts, datas and science. If Republicans say Trickle down economy works, then it will work somehow. Republicans say Climate Change is fake, so it must be fake. If Climate Change isn't fake, then why would our Republicans say it's fake? Our republican leaders knows best for us, even if we don't know it yet. If they told us to jump off a bridge, we will do it with no questions asked because they know what is best for us. If Republicans say we don't need healthcare, then we don't.
+Kevin Are you f'g kidding? Jerry Brown is wrecking that state. How about the "temporary tax"? No so temporary now is it? How about the billion dollar overage in his grandiose high speed rail that isn't even high speed? He raised the gas tax to paper over the corruption in the HSR project. Don't expect any of that to go to roads. Then he flushed a trillion gallons of fresh water into the ocean during a drought. There is a reason CA and IL have crap credit ratings. Progressive Democrats!!!!
Tax cuts have to create Demand and that has only consistently happened with tax cuts on people who use it the middle class and the poor. The Wealthy just keep it cause what he cut may have hired one or two but there was no demand to warrant the hiring
a billionaire would only spend 5% of his income throughout his entire life while the working-class would spend aprox 110% of his income putting it back into the economy. trickle down economics doesn't work nor ever will.
The Young Terks, The Income tax cuts are WORKING in Kansas. REVENUE INCREASED this past year and the year before. Revenue INCREASED the year before 69.9 million & this past year 144.7 million dollars. How is a revenue problem when revenue is INCREASING? ANSWER THAT QUESTION! The State of Kansas is spending money based on UNREALISTIC REVENUE INCREASES! Who makes more money. The State of Kansas or some business owner or farmer? THE RICH STATE OF KANSAS makes more money than anyone in Kansas. They are the ones who are RICH! COMMON SENSE! THE STATE OF KANSAS are the ones who are RICH!
Under Brownback's plan, Every KANSAN is supposed to pay NO STATE INCOME TAXES by the year 2019. Not just POOR FARMERS & POOR BUSINESS OWNERS! How is that a tax cut just for the so-called Rich. The State of Kansas has NEVER CUT education. Education spending in Kansas has went up EVERY YEAR since 1992. This past year alone education spending went up over 300 million dollars. I don't call cutting education a 100 million later a cut in education when educatiion spending was INCREASED over 300 million dollars compared to the year before. This INCREASED EDUCATION SPENDING is what is causing the shortfalls in Kansas . Still spent over 200 million on education than the year before.
Explain how Kansas has a revenue problem when revenue is increasing? ANSWER THE QUESTION! Or would you rather talk about the last three years LIBERAL TAX & SPEND governor Kathleen Sebelius was governor in Kansas when revenue was ACTUALLY DECLINING her last three years as governor in Kansas. You seem to have forgot that mess she left kansas in. Why did Liberal governor Parkenson have to raise the sales tax 1% (WHICH WAS A 19.2% sales tax hike) to clean up her mess she left Kansas to run Obama Care? That sales tax hike to clean up her mess was the BIGGEST TAX INCREASE IN KANSAS HISTORY! There is a reason Brownback WON 100 of the 105 counties in the last election. We did not forget that MESS Kathleen Sebelius left the State of Kansas in! All Kansans were stuck paying for ther mess she left Kansas in! You sir don't know what you are talking about!
@TRINIPIMP1, Why were you NOT COMPLAINING the last time Kansas had a TAX & SPEND LIBERAL DEMOCRAT GOVERNOR (Kathleen Sebelius) when revenue was ACTUALLY DECLINING in Kansas her LAST 3 years as governor in Kansas? ANSWER THE QUESTION YOU STUPID LIBERAL IDIOT! Here are the DECLINING REVENUE NUMBERS when TAX & SPEND LIBERAL GOVERNOR Kathleen Sebelius was governor of Kansas.
In 2008 Total Revenue in Kansas was $8,262,533,273. In 2009, Total Revenue DECLINED in Kansas to $7,801,458,589. Total Revenue DECLINED AGAIN in 2010 in Kansas to $7,477,367,527. Why were you NOT COMPLAINING BACK THEN when Kansas was in REVENUE FAILURE because of your TAX & SPEND LIBERAL POLICIES THAT DID NOT WORK and caused businesses to leave Kansas? That caused the Revenue Failure in Kansas! ANSWER THE QUESTION YOU STUPID LIBERAL IDIOT!
Or would you rather discuss the 20 Trillion In National Debt you have caused? Or would you rather discuss the 450 Billion in UNFUNDED PENSION DEBT IN TAXIFORNIA? Or would you rather discuss the 250 billion in UNFUNDED PENSION DEBT in Illinois? THE ONLY LIAR IS YOU!
@TRINIPIMP1, There is a reason under President Obama Democrats have LOST 900+ State Legislature seats, 12 governors, 69 house seats, and 13 senate seats. There is a reason TRUMP WON 30 of the 50 states! All TAX & SPEND LIBERALS IDIOTS LIKE YOU HAVE DONE is create 20 Trillion in National Debt! How are you paying that back you STUPID LIBERAL IDIOT? President Obama has created more National Debt than the 43 Presidents before him combined! FACT! NEXT!
@ TRINIPIMP1, THE RICH IS THE STATE OF KANSAS! The State of Kansas made over 8.5 BILLION DOLLARS LAST YEAR! Nobody makes more money in Kansas than the RICH STATE OF KANSAS! REVENUE HAS INCREASED EVERY MONTH! The State of Kansas is short of money because TAX & SPEND LIBERALS in the Kansas Legislature are spending money based on UNREALISTIC INCREASES IN REVENUE ESTIMATES! NOT BECAUSE REVENUE HAS BEEN INCREASING! Kansas has INCREASED EDUCATION SPENDING EVERY YEAR since 1992. THAT IS A FACT!
Really, was this even a surprise? It didn't work in the 80s, so why would it work now? If rich people have to pay less tax, all they'll do is hoard the extra or put it in offshore accounts. They might reinvest some, but even so they'll still spend less than the middle class.
And then republicans wonder why they are so much in debt. They want to cut taxes, cut education, cut food stamps, all of which stimulate the economy, and then they want to increase the goddamn military budget which is just money flushed out of the economy because soldiers spend their salary in other countries wherever they're stationed in. I heard republicans wanted to pass a bill where it would increase military spending but Obama said hell no. Guess who's in congress right now? REPUBLICANS. Obama is merely a dummy.
7:36 - The proverbial nail on the head! Remember when President Barack Hussein Obama talked about spreading the wealth? Repugnicans simply called that redistribution of wealth. Why? Because it 'implies' taking from the wealthy and giving it to the poor and middle-classes, but what do you call that in reverse? THE SAME THING YOU MORONS! The money is just moving in the opposite direction. Of course the most uneducated among us do not believe this to be true. [They'll] say, "Nah, the poor and middle-classes don't have any wealth!" NOT ANYMORE THEY DON'T! Thanks to lil'bush style tax cuts/trickle-down/supply-side economics that ONLY benefit the wealthiest among us! Meanwhile the dumb-dumb's are still waiting for the trickling to begin. How long has it been now? 35+ years and [they've] been pissing on us the whole time telling us it's raining money/jobs! The reality is that [they've] been telling us Social Security is going broke. This is what [they] want! And what better way to destroy it than to take away jobs so that contributions to [it] are not as plentiful as they once were! Oh, that's okay though. Whatever money you can scrape together from your part-time job after paying you and your family's monthly living expenses, you can gamble on the Wall Street Casino! What's that? You really want to work hard to provide a better life for your family than you had? ME TOO! Another reality is that previous generations had better opportunities to do so than we do. Is this really the America we want??? I'll leave you some food for thought, the people that have all the money now, didn't work for it! It was handed down from Daddy! I'm talking about the Trump's, Koch's, and Walton's of the world! Thank you Cenk & staff, for your tireless crusade to set the masses straight! I know your journey is long and arduous, but maybe one day we will all look back on all of the information provided to us and realize we're being duped by a system whose goal is to keep us enslaved - financially and otherwise!
+The Gooch If the distribution was fair we wouldnt even be talking about redistribution. In the 50's the top tax rate was 90% and the average CEO made 17x what the worker made. Now the top tax rate is less that 40% and CEO compensation is 300x the average worker. Do we really even need to debate this? I dont think so.
you're talking to them like they onto know what their doing. they do, instead you should accuse them of their crime. highlight to the world where real justice will be paid in with blood of those who've lost everything including their lives.
Being a Kansan, I abhor Sam Brownback. Personally I believe that the only reason he was reelected was because of voter fraud sanctioned by the Koch brothers who personally own assets in Kansas, and who benefit from these extreme tax cuts.
It seems Kansas has no shortage of state police (though don't know how they are paying for it), I had a delivery in Dodge City today, and saw 5-10 people including 2 other semi's pulled over today alone
when Reagan came up with trickle down it didn't work then why anyone would think it works now is a republican. But at the end of their demi gods rule even they were calling it Vodoo economics. Evidently the Republicans don't believe that remembering the past will prevent the same failures in the future (a paraphrase from someone who died long time ago, but was still smarter than todays Republicans)
+payank505 I'm from Kansas and I couldn't believe that shit...it wasn't working and they voted for him again because he said it needs more time to start working. Sad thing is is that even when they take the tax cuts back (if they do) its not like they are going to give middle-lower class tax cuts or do anything for us getting screwed over, we will just end up paying for it.
No facts here. All he does is quote the AP. Like they are even close to a reliable source of information. But he is a leftist quoting leftist. you know what they say, repeat a lie enough it becomes fact. I guess that is what you get when you have a leftwing progressive born in Turkey trying to influence U.S policies and politics.
This is redistribution of wealth. This is what the Republicans tell you they don't want, except they only don't want it to happen if the money is taken from the rich and spread to the mid and lower class. They have no qualms about siphoning money from the poor and middle class and giving it to the wealthy and corporations. And they take it from education, to keep the next generation stupid enough to think trickle down economics will work when they get older, even though it never has.
Brownback never intended to give that tax break to farmers, his administration was surprised when tax income dropped as much as it did and realized it was because all the farmers were able to fit into his tax loophole.
Also who is going to want to move a business to a state where you are going to have to send your kids to a crumbling school system? Sure the top echelon will send their kids to private schools but you still have a lot of management that have kids in public schools, they look and KS and vote not to move here.
The situation in Kansas is one of my favorite stories lately. i feel sorry for the people of Kansas but it really does show how Massive tax cuts does not stimulate the economy and frequently leads to the government having to cut funding for other essential things. This is the true face of republican economic policy. when is america going to wake up.
Just a thought. If we're at the end of a debt supercycle, where people are trying to reduce their liabilities. Maybe the money from a tax cut, is used to pay down debt, and not spent. It's interesting to note, if what I've just read is correct, is that income taxes started out as 7% for the rich and 1% for everyone else. Something to ponder.
I think that an even tax cut at this point is no different from giving another tax break to the wealthy. Everyone in the lower and middle classes owes money to the wealthiest people because we have an economy that is rigged in their favor. Giving a flat tax break to everyone (we'll ignore that this is impossible to do without collecting less tax revenue) in this case doesn't improve consumer spending so it doesn't improve the economy and it really only serves the wealthy. The argument for giving tax breaks to the poor and middle classes because it will increase consumer spending doesn't really work if everyone in the poor and middle classes is deep in debt to the rich and can't even think about spending money.
Before Reagan, corporations were paying 35% of the United States' taxes. Now they are paying less than 10% of the taxes and yet we are collecting more in total taxes every year than we did before Reagan. That additional money has to be coming from somewhere and it hasn't been coming out of the incomes of the richest and most powerful members of society. It has been coming out of our pockets. If you want to unfuck the economy and end all this outrageous debt, then start demanding that we shift the tax burden back where it belongs.
Something else to ponder. When corporations were first established after the Depression, their original purpose was to give people the option to separate their personal assets from their business ones under the condition that the corporations pay higher taxes than people do because the people who incorporated aren't taking personal risks. We created corporations because of how many wealthy people there were who lost everything they had overnight when the economy collapsed. Somehow we have forgotten the condition that corporations are not people and that they are supposed to pay higher taxes than people and we've allowed the largest corporations who do almost all of their business in this country to pay less than 10% of our taxes. Some of the biggest corporations today are paying nothing in taxes and others have been getting tax reliefs for years because we have legalized bribing our politicians.
Whaaaaat? Trickle down economics did what it was designed to do again? We should tell everyone it's awesome, despite the evidence, and try more and more and more of it?
America, what is your fascination with putting idiots into power?
This is highly informative and shows why it's so important to get involved with local politics. If citizens don't perform oversight, these politicians will ruin your life. Show up at the city council meetings, join local groups that oversee important issues. It's our govt--don't let dumb nuts like this treat it as their property.
I say we take 3 Red States and 3 Blue States and let them run them by Right wing economic policy and Left wing Economic policy. Lock them in for 20 years- offer cheap housing for the people who want to migrate to their utopia- or away from their nightmare. Lets see what happens. This shits not new- its not rocket science. We have seen many countries with many different philosophies- we know the outcome. Trickle down- look at Chile after the coup in 1973- Milton Friedman was flown down to personally oversee the new economy of El Dictator Pinochet- look what happened- Venezuela followed- this philosophy works best under Fascism- Ever wonder why the US is turning Police state?
ironically cutting infrastructure jobs and the training of future workforce and cutting workers pay and pensions- this is all money that the workers spend in the community- this is what creates jobs- not bank accounts and offshore bs.
Trickle-down economics is the rich saying "We're all too poor to invest and there's no one giving loans"
Stop believing the obvious lie!
Supply-side economics was debunked way back in the 1930s.
Demand and infrastructure drive economic growth. (and cutting budgets reduces both).
oh, I don't dispute that at all, but my point was that we've had more recent examples than even that.
Actually, I think they're not the first state to try it since the 2008 crash if memory serves.
We've seen nearly a century of evidence pile up against "trickle-down economics" so it's not like there should be any question on the matter by anyone who's studied economics at all.
Ignoring investors not investing because there's no demand at the time, there really hasn't been a large-scale situation where lack of investment has held economic development back in the modern age.
Between corporations (specifically stocks as a means of gathering investment), and having a banking industry (which rapidly forms anytime where charging interest isn't forbidden), there's really not much of an argument for lack of the "supply" of investment funds (even less so now with crowdfunding).
Not to mention that established businesses are the ones least in need of it. Sure, a lack of it can slow growth greatly, but it's not going to doom them like a lack of demand will.
Some perspective: there's only two brackets in Kansas so the top bracket includes most people. The problem is among those businesses getting tax breaks is one of the Koch bros and a lot of people are taking advantage of the system so they get out of paying taxes. Also, the pension delay is on all state employees not just educators. Last the legislators may be saying they're tired of this situation but they are not voting to change it and instead are more focused on lessening gun restrictions
Kansas got what they wanted so suffer the consequences. Trust and believe they are going to elect another fascist republicunt when the next election for governor comes around , they are never going to learn so tough shit. Plus Brownback and the Kansas republicunts passed the largest tax increase in Kansas history which is mostly affecting the middle class and the poor.
Kansas used to have a lot to offer to draw businesses to the state. No really. Central location, moderate weather, schools were decent (especially for a red state)...Our big problem was poor PR. Kansas has always been the butt of jokes. Now Brownback has done his best to ruin education k-phd. He is destroying our ability to keep up infrastructure...If he could do more harm to our weather I'm sure he would. What is there now to draw in business? Nothing.
+Reality Forge You think Trump is "more progressive" than Hillary? That is the dumbest thing I've read all year.
No wonder clueless people like you are all over the internet advocating for a Trump Presidency just because you're favorite candidate isn't winning. (That is the electorate equivalent of a toddler throwing and breaking the toys because he didn't get his way.) It's because you all were never really progressive to begin with.
I live in Kansas and when he says that most farmers are just businessmen is totally inaccurate. I live in western Kansas where there isn't anything but farms. This is what irritates me about TYT they pretend to know what we want and how we think about things.
Meanwhile, in the Democratic controlled state of California, just the opposite is going on. Taxes on the rich have skyrocketed and the California economy is booming. Go figure http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-pol-sac-skelton-bernie-sanders-tax-revenue-20160502-story.html
+mondovb The stock market, President Obama's claim to fame, has been doing incredibly well since the cut backs on the rich. There was also a huge economic boom in the 90s with Bush and Clinton basically following the policies of Reagan (devolution to the states ect.), with low interest rates leading us through the 90s. Both the S&L and subprime mortgage rate crashes where egged on by a poor government policy of laxing regulatory policies that were put in place for a reason and had nothing to do with lowering taxes. I wasn't even advocating Reagan-level cuts which were along the same lines as the Kansas cuts in terms of frivolousness and were done with no intention of ever making that money back. The realistic alternative would have been the tax levels post Bush Sr. combined with tax loophole closing and budget cuts back to where it was pre/early-Reagan which would have yielded a surplus. Mind you that Reagan's tax plan did constitute the two largest tax hikes ever put into place in peace time through the closing of tax loopholes used by the rich. Also due to inflation, many people average people before Reagan had begun to feel the pressure of inflation since the marginal tax rate was not adjusted with inflation rates, meaning they were getting paid (and taxed much more) despite the value of their wages staying the same.
+PotatoMasher1234 and letting people keep their income does help the economy nationally and partially on a state level the but effects require a longer amount of time to show results than the state of Kansas is able to wait. If you save your money, 9/10 wealthy people will either save that money through stock investment, the purchasing of goods that have value growth or at least stable value (think vineyards, gold, cars, ect.), the acquiring of real-estate assets, or putting it in a bank (which will then presumably do the aforementioned things with it)
Half of the GOP seats were won unethically, due to extreme gerrymandering and voter suppression. They are illegitimate. They must be stopped. Scalia died way too late. A pox on Clarence Thomas. One can only hope.
But you wanna "Make America Great Again" with Trump huh? One day people will see that republicans don't give 2 fucks about nobody but themselves!! I personally don't trust ANY politician but repubs are just on a different level of fuckery!!
We had this in my county - they used to symbolically cut property taxes every year, even if it was a fraction of a percent, to say they cut taxes. Property values have been so low, and revenue has been slowly declining for so long, that they've run out of cuts, and SURPRISE, this year they're not cutting the rate even though property values are very slightly up - and they've said they're doing this because they need the extra bit of cash to stock up the rainy day fund they've been pillaging as part of the regular budget for the past several years.
It takes balance, you can't just always cut taxes unless you cut programs, and when you cut programs you piss off voters - if you cut enough programs they'll elect someone else that can get the damned job done without affecting their daily life.
That's how it works - you get in power and you stay in power by sequestering as much money and influence with the wealthy & powerful as is possible. Code words, mis-directional schemes, lies, obfuscation and many other tricks are employed to make it seem like what you're doing is best for everyone, while in truth it is only beneficial to your core constituency. Get power, keep power, that's what it is all about.
Well if I was a business owner, my main focus is on making more money for myself. I am certainly not going to go through the hassle of creating new jobs when I have a nice tax break that just gave me the extra cash I was looking to make.....and.without any risk! Simple isn't it!
Trickle-down Economics/Supply-side economics has already been proven ineffective and, in fact, harmful. The purest laboratory was Chile in the 1970s under Gen. Pinochet who employed Milton Friedman and his cronies to set up the framework of his new economy. Needless to say it was an utter disaster.
