On November 10, 1979 a 106-car Canadian Pacific freight train carrying explosive and poisonous chemicals derailed near the interesection of Mavis Road and Dundas Street in Mississauga ON. More than 200,000 people were affected by the largest peace time evacuation in North America, a record that held until Hurricane Katrina caused the evacuation of New Orleans in 2005. There were no deaths resulting from the incident.

I was working for McDonald's in Toronto when this happened. When I wasn't working my shifts , I had arranged for the store located at Hurontario and Dundas to keep making food as fast as I could deliver it. I would load the car with hundreds of burgers, fries and drinks.I never slept or actually went home for 4 days! Just washed up at the store. I would drive along the perimeter that the police had set up at every street and drop it off for them. There were police from all over that came because there was so much area closed off. I always told them I would see them in a while again. It was also the only time I sped on purpose and didn't get a ticket! I remember one officer asking me if I wanted a gas mask to wear just in case. I wanted to also try to use the Hurontario and Q.E.W. store as well but, they had to close because of the wind direction. And of course, Mayor Hazel was right there. What an amazing woman. I really hoped that I would never have to see something on this scale again. Unfortunately, I was on Jay Street in New York (10 minutes walk to WTC) on September 11th, 2001 when they got hit.
