An estimated 160 million children around the world spend most days working. Nearly 11 million of them live in the Americas — and in Bolivia, thousands work at the most dangerous job: mining.
The Bolivian government recently lowered the legal working age from 14 to 10 years old — in order to at least regulate the labor conditions of children who already have the dangerous jobs.
Richard, 15, has been working in Cerro Rico mine since he was 10-years-old. “There is no one to talk to in the mine, you can’t go play, there are no friends, there’s nothing,” Richard told VICE News. He wants to stop working but his job helps support his six siblings.
Miners like Richard can earn up to $86 per week.
But it’s not just the little they make. Local NGO’s say that on average 14 miners die every month from accidents and a lung disease called silicosis.
VICE News followed Richard as he worked inside Cerro Rico's dangerous tunnels.

It makes me sick to know that poor 15 yr old kids mother has the gall to have 6 other children and he has to financially support her decision to have all those kids in poverty. Close your damn legs lady, you're a disgrace as a parent.
Here's a fun fact; Twenty five years ago this week, 190 member countries of United Nations passed the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a landmark agreement that stands as one of the most ratified human rights treaties in history. The CRC, which turned 25 years old on November 20th, follows the 1959 Declaration of the Rights of the Child, and is the world’s most comprehensive framework for the protection of children’s rights. It includes the right to protection from discrimination based on their parent’s or legal guardian’s sex, race, religion, and a host of other identifiers. The convention supports protections for children from forced labor, child marriage, deprivation of a legal identity, and grants both able-bodied and disabled children the right to health care, education, and freedom of expression. It also has safeguards for parents to take care of their children, including parental leave.
Only three U.N. countries have not ratified the CRC: Somalia, South Sudan, and…the United States.
Respect these kids. But as a parent. Why have 6 kids if you can't support them?. Your children become your oldest child's responsibility.. birth control. Maybe have 2 kids and they can go to schools and help the fam..
Minister of mining has "no control" fucking masonic politicians pieces of shit, i bet he doesn't have any lung problems or any other weird health issue from not having fresh air and breathing that toxic from dynamite. Sure!! they never have control of anything. Dont know why they are rich and wealthy then, these are kids that are dying in those mines by the way
Literally no one blamed white people at all, what is with your victim mentality? Clearly the problem is multi layer, from falling silver prices, degrading working conditions and administration, etc. Please consider not breeding.
WTF happened to Bolivia??? they elected a full-blood Native (Evo Morales in 2005 - the longest running Bolivian politician ever) whose electoral platform was SPECIFICALLY about giving the profits from all natural resources in the country back to the people - NOT about lining the pockets of Global banks. He made the west so nervous then with his VERY radical ideas hat he said were going to be put into practice if he was elected....what happened to this beautiful country and the amazing people that shared and tought me about the wonderful Quinoa sacred grain that I grow here in northern Canada to feed myself and others?? Bolivian people in this thread, please tell me what happened to your country in the last 12 years?
Nothing happened, Evo Morales keep the same economic structure.
Not just that, he become allied with the cooperativist miners that use child labor to have more profits, reducing their taxes and allowing they do whatever they want.
I live in a country that's wealthy, well educated, my job pays a decent wage.. and I choose not to have children because I don't think I have the money right now to give them the life I'd want them to have..
Then I see people in these dirt poor conditions breeding like rabbits, and find it tough to understand
"Look at our kids living in poverty, that we force to work to support us parents.. feel bad for us"
hand out some fucking condoms over there, thats the first step to helping them.
This obviously has been long going. There is a movie called ‘The Devil’s Miners” (I think, it’s been years). And it’s about two boys working in the mines to support their poor family. It’s an amazing movie.
Timmy West indeed but it is wrong a child should build his own life feed his own children, but instead he will be breaking his back to feed his parents. This is selfish to give birth to a child so he will feed you like a slave when you become old.
AvgJane19 Not their it was they. Your correction is wrong. Many case examples are available to you via internet. If i provide a link your response will be "thats only one of them" im going to have to guess. NGOs all over the world like the ships in the news from europe the Aquarius is one. They run a human smuggling ring and theres plenty to see about it online. Goodluck
Some are also really religious, and most religions are against using birth control. Like the pope in the 90's said that using condoms was a sin, in Africa allot of Christian African's did not use them, so Aids went rampant.
Jesus! And here I - 30+ y.o. man - sit and drink a bottle of wine all by myself on my weekend. Enjoying life and shit. While these kids have to work their asses and their youth away. How can I help these people? How can I send some money?
@liamdor so in other words, no news should be reported on that sheds south americans in a positive light or shows south america as a struggling economy for fear of offending your feelings? grow up snowflake
Bolivians are small immigrant population in the U.S and majority of them are legal since Bolivia is so far from the border if they come to the U.S illegally it’s because they overstay their Visas. This is just a news story.
Ignar Husky Progressive Maddog sadly with the lack of Birth control in my country and the lack of education of it to the people as it is also very religious in those parts families are very big in poor areas and the children need to help out. Child labor is illegal but the president wanted to lower the labor age to 12 so they can regulate the children workers now closely and have better benefits but nothing significant has been done so far
So i wonder where billions of profits from silver sales are going while these children slowly killing themselves on this job? And yet somehow silver is cheap and bitcoin worth so much. Does that mean that their efforts, tears, blood, sweat and ruined health worth 72$ per week basically worth nothing and some graphic crypto code which is an open source technology worth 6167$? This is insane.
Dude, you gotta stop huffing clickbait.
They speak spanish but they aren't mexicans, besides most of the crack problem usa have comes from drug smuggled illegally through the borders, stop comparing mexican drug dealers with bolivian hard workers not only its offensive to bolivians its very retarded to do so.
thank god i can mine, BITCOIN, without moving a muscle at 17 years old. whats so spectacular is, that kid can buy his own GPU miner with the money he made from being enslaved, mining SILVER, and mine some BITCOIN without risking his life. :D
Agreed, have kids only if you can afford them. Developing/third world countries need to learn to control their birth issues and not ask the western countries to send them money for their poor children that should not have been born to begin with.
