Mirtazapine is a tetracyclic antidepressant in the NaSSA class. It has a similar efficacy to SSRIs and TCAs, and it may be a better option for certain populations.
Some recreational effects like euphoria, CEVs, enhancement of cannabis, and dream enhancement have been reported at certain doses. It's not clear how reliable those effects are.

I'm on 30 mg
This is my 3rd day since using lexapro instead. I've slept so much better. I don't mind the sleeping or hunger since my depression and anxiety have made me underweight. Lexapro gave me stomach problems and diarrhea in the morning and night, No libido, my vagina ran away.
I also couldnt handle SSRIs...only remeron didnt give me stomach pains, loss of appetite or constant nausea....I am also underweight and want to start using this again...I will tell my doctor about it,hope he gives it to me,hope I gain weight on it
I dreamt that a cult member stabbed me in the stomach with a sword after being ordered to do so. There was a bunch of other things but I can't remember.
I'm on the lowest possible dose (7.5) so I don't understand why I would be having weird dreams, why I'm tossing and turning so much at night or why I'm so tired.
I'll keep track tho. See how things go. Weird.
This antidepressant works the best out of every other antidepressant I have been on.
My anxiety has been way better
My depression has been better too
Seriously this is such a good antidepressant. I will say this that it has caused me to gain a lot of weight :(
So that is just one thing I need to work on and hope that my weight will be back to a healthy weight.
I started a course of mirtazapine (predicted to be 6 months long) 4 days ago and it's been pretty good so far. Increased appetite (good for me as I have IBS and struggle to gain weight), less trouble getting to sleep at night (normally I would go to bed at 3 or 4) and apart from a small rash on both my hands, no other noticeable side effects (apart from very slight drowsiness in the day time and more vivid dreams at, but that's it).
The only thing that I'm a bit anxious about is drinking. I've read that you are not supposed to drink after taking mirtazapine, but I'm supposed to be going out to a rave in a few days where I plan on drinking. I also normally do ketamine when I go out, but I might give it a miss this time as I don't want to pass out or hurt myself falling over.
I absolutely live Mirtazapine, I live feeling like a newborn when I go to bed at night. You sleep so god damn good and I have closed eyed visuals too, its like a weed high but without being high? I got the munchies real bad on this, Ive gained alot of weight but I dont mind it since im 6'2 so I look pretty much the same after gaining 20 pounds. It does cause severe drowsiness; you could wake up and still feel tired. It does help with ny anxiety and depression, but I dont feel happy just nuetral, its better than having anxiety attacks and suicidal thoughts in my opinion. It dont really have motivation on this since you just feel tired all the time even if something you enjoy doing. But all in a best anti depressant and anti anxiety out there.
i am taking 45 mg and i take valium 5 mg its affecting me to work has any one else experiencing this please message me back i find it so hard to get out off my bed and ive put on so much weight i was 100 kg and ive put on 45 kg i am 145 kg now i find it so hard to even go to the bath room and shave please get back to me and let me know if you guys having the same problem . and if i don't take them i get so angry i had to go to anger management . i learned few things but with out my medication i think the hole world is against me and i am so angry . so i have to take my bedicatin it works but the side effects of putting weight and i cant even go to the store to bye my shopping has any one eprince the same way please let me know .
I’ve just been prescribed this to help with my sleep and depression.
I’m a little concerned about the side effects. Especially the increased appetite and weight gain. As I’m already classed as overweight.
So I’m having second thoughts about taking it.
Any tips from people who are currently taking this?
This is very popular in County Jails and prisons, particularly in detention centers that have banned Quetiapine. Helpful to those looking to sleep away their time. However it seems get certain people completely wired. But it's heavily sedative for the most part. It does have some psychoactive effects however. I've never done enough to really explore it as I just needed sleep, but I did notice that when it would begin working I would a experience an odd, somewhat relaxing but almost disassociative kind of buzz that would last for about 60-90 minutes before shifting into sedation.
I did witness a few inmates crushing tablets and insufflating them, but then it IS jail after all, and people are fiending for any kind of a head change they can possibly find. So I can't speak to whether or not it provides a more recreational effect or not.'
Extremely dangerous lemme just tell you that. Took this like 6 months ago from the doctor, couldn’t stay awake but kept seeing bright flashes when I closed my eyes, realised it wasn’t right I tried to go to the toilet and kept falling on the floor. Fell down the stairs trying to get to the phone.
I'm having chronic sore throat and have zeroed in on mirtaz. is there any alternative to Mirtaz and with minor weight gain and that will not cause sore throat?? any info will much appreciated. (been taking this on prescription)
Mirtazapine's lack of suppression and possible increase on REM sleep is just a consequence of Mirtazapine's inability to increase serotonin in the brain, specifically in the (D/M Raphe Nuclei), and this is countenanced in numerous journal articles dealing with the pharmacology of sleep. Mirtazapine's effects of any note are at H1, a2, 5HT-2C and 2A. Antagonism at H1 creates drowsiness and diminishes anxiety, at 2C staves off nausea, at 2A CNS activity, which adds to the anti-anxiety effect and is precisely why Mirtazapine was used in a convincing case report to reverse Serotonin Toxicity.
Mirtzazapine isn't an anti-depressant, but can quell anxiety if the patient can tolerate the side effects of fatigue, weight gain and sometimes increased BP.
You almost lost me at "pretty unique", but I battled through. Mirtazapine is in effect principally an older class antihistamine, with a heck of an impressive H1 receptor affinity of 0.91 nM. That Mirtazapine is even classed as an anti-depressant is a modern miracle of big pharma. Let me hedge a little and say that there's no doubt that sufferers whose primary symptom is anxiety (think of mixed anxiety-depression) are helped by this drug, but it's not an anti-depressant, and in fact makes some symptoms of depression worse. People with endogenous depression will need something else, or a stronger adjunct medication to get to a higher level of functionality, possibly even a stimulant considering their level of fatigue on a moderate dose of Mirtazapine.
Of course, people with reactive depression are helped by just about any drug, even a placebo, and these patients make up the majority of new patient visits to psychiatrists' offices.
The claim that it is not an antidepressant would need to pretty well-referenced. Although there are issues with the way clinical trials are run in general and how they're run in depressed patients specifically, the available evidence shows antidepressant effects. If you have a bit of published evidence demonstrating it makes depression worse more often than it improves depression, feel free to share it.
They say Mirtazapine only takes about 3 weeks to work, it definitely took a good two months for me to notice any mood improvements. It works pretty well as a motivational aid for me too, the only thing that bothered me was the weight gain, the appetite stimulant effects disappear after about a month though. This only made me more motivated to join the gym and I feel a lot better than I did five months ago. They certainly got me out of the horrible, deep suicidal depression that I used to have. Barely any side effects at 30mg, no brain zaps like the SSRI's, the best Anti-Depressant I've ever had.
Working out/exercising really really helps, particularly for stress due to the endorphin release. They are good for sleep but they're not as sedating in higher doses, but work as a stronger AD. Find yourself a goal, then when you reach it, find another and another. Also try and cut down on your alcohol use.
Nice to hear this kind of response.
I've been on a very low dose, 7.5mg basicly for chronic Insomnia as well as depression. Started 1.5 weeks ago and i already feel better, no side effects apart of some minor stuff and very weird nightmares. Basicly my sleeping pattern has been fixed since the first day i took it and it of course has a huge effect alone. Going to get the gym card too in the coming days. Lets see!
Mertazazipine combined with Sativa Cannabis certainly does give you close eye visuals which are similar to a 75ug dose of LSD. I enjoyed the experience but that's because i like psychedelic experiences.
The trouble with mirtazapine ,( I have been on it for 5 years. Is trying to come off it ,serotonin syndrome is terrible. Sweating attacks, uncoordinatin vertigo ,paranoia and a general sense of unreality. I would only use it for short term. Or as a sleeping aid. Its the first port of call for drs to give out t o treat depression in the UK. Use with caution and not for long is my advise.
I take Mirtazapine, and an hour after I take it, i get very serious side effects. It causes Hallucinations, vision changes, drowsiness, dizziness, eye pain, color changes, auditory hallucinations, and more.
I have been taking these for a while brilliant for sleep at night and through the night, previously I would take ages to get to sleep and wake up early in the morning not getting much sleep at all these have worked well for me in that sense, however I have noticed recently when cutting down from 30 mg to 15mg I have been getting a bit panicky maybe once a day I have cut down for 2 weeks now and plan to come off them completely hopefully I can take control of my life again and start being me.
Somebody I care about started on this almost five years ago and started on 15mg each night for sleep. They sleep good on 15mg. But they were also being treated for depression and the dose was increased to 45mg. They could not sleep a wink. It seems the drug sedated in low dose but stimulated thinking at higher dose which is why the dopers are using higher doses. I myself tried 15mg after visiting my own doctor. It nearly killed me. I was responsible and had with food. But 30 mins later I had to leave a social setting to lay down in a dark room with severe dizziness, nausea and cold sweating while I gradually faded. It was absolutely terrifying. My advice from the experience? Go with the prescribed meds. Always do your own full research into any medication and understand what research is out there and what people have experienced. Know as much as you possibly can and never do recreational experiments. There have been too many accidents and time and again it affects others not just you. Thanks for you work Russell.
Very good video, like always! Wanted to ask, can you please also do a video on an other antidepressant called venlafaxine/Effexor? It has some very interesting pharmacology and it's chemical structure is practically identical to that of Tramadol. Would be an interesting video. ;)
I've been taking 45mg of this for a few years. A while ago i took some LSD and had one of the worst trips of my life, i took 45mg Mirtazapine 20/30 mins later the feeling of impending doom was starting to lift. It probably saved my life.
I LOVE mirtazapine. It helps me sleep like a baby, gives me insanely vivid dreams, and doesn't have any side effects for me anymore. It's odd, at the 15 mg dose I was more groggy during the day and hungry all of the time, but over the past year as I've moved up to 45 mg all of those properties disappeared. The only time I tried an SSRI (sertraline) it made me sick as a dog and ruined my life for about a month, so I'm very thankful that there are atypical antidepressants such as mirtazapine. I used to take trazodone for insomnia, but mirtazapine is much more sedating and soothing at bedtime. Trazodone always made me feel kinda like my heart was going to jump out of my chest, like I'd been hit by a tranquilizer dart and had no choice but to pass out, but it was in no way relaxing or anxiolytic. And the grogginess in the morning after trazodone (especially if you don't have a tolerance to it yet) is second to none. I know everybody reacts to drugs differently, but mirtazapine is so superior to trazodone in every way. It's definitely improved my quality of life.
Story of my life, the ONLY antidepressant I can stomach is Mirta....Zoloft OMG terrible, made me more anxious than ever....and venlafaxine scared me because I couldnt eat ANYTHING and I am underweight so I stopped it after 2 weeks told my doctor I want something else...I will suggest Remeron next time....because I used it before for 2 years and it was cool
MY QUESTION IS THIS, I AM PROSCRIBED TO TAKE MIRTAZAPINE AT BED TIME AND HALF A PILL OF OLANZAPINE AT BED TIME...IS THAT SAFE BECAUSE BOTH CAN KCOCK YOU OUT LIKE A PUNCH TO THE JAW BY FLOYD MAYWEATHER!?
I once knew a guy who had these prescribed to him. Once popped these while drinking, due to prescription as he should. He pretty much lost all control and memory for the next 30 minutes.
He lost all barriers that prevent you from doing stupid shit, it was pretty much what you would propably witness someone doing on MDMA. For example he kissed some random girl right infront of hes girlfriend.
Another guy tried one too and the results were pretty much the same. Its like 30-60 min long MDMA roll and no recollecrion ehat happened afterwards.
So i guess my advice is taking these while drinking alcohol isnt propably a good idea.
I've been prescribe Mirtazapine. Just start on it. The problems is I've been do some research and found out that Mirtazapine can cause serious high in cholesterol and triglycerides even on healthy person who consume it. It cause more anxiety and made me think to stop it before it geta worse. Please clarify this. Had to know this for sure from all of you guys that been used for long term and who knows about this med more detail. I do appreciate your comment guys.
It does work well for me. To bad the side-effects are too bad for me. I sleep way way way to much, and any anxiety reduction it gives me goes away when i drink the copious amounts of coffee that i need to make the brain-fog lift.
Thank you very much as I found this easy to understand and very informative regarding medical and recreational use
I would give your short video 5 stars from 5 because it was so helpful and answered few questions that I wanted answers to and I got that and more
I'm a naturally thin man, almost anorexic looking, always had trouble putting on weight. this drug combined with weight training and healthy eating I've been able to put a 30lbs and look much healthier. some side effect I noticed was frequent night time urination 4-7 times right before bed. and some drowsiness during the day, like a hangover without the sick feelings.
+Chelsey Halloran I preferred taking only mirta ,sertraline only made me more anxious,my biggest problem is anxiety not depression, I regret soooo much stopping remeron it was a really good medicine for both anxiety and insomnia and weight gain ,I am underweight and want to ask my doctor to give it to me again, but I want only Mirta no SSRIs.
It can happen, even on weed alone. The reason why it's so rare is because most people are regular smokers these days so tolerance makes CEV impossible. Back when I used to only smoke once or twice a year, a joint of some strong sativa would bring on some mild CEVs.
Can mirtazapin cause fatigue while drinking? Some weeks ago i drank like 7 glasses of little bit vodka with the combination of orange juice at a party. It’s what I normally drink without problems. But that night I fainted one time and was out for 2-3 minutes and was perfectly fine for another 2 hours. Then I fainted again and vomited everywhere. I was fine after a few minutes but I choose to go home, but nothing happend after that. I thinks it’s weird and i don’t know if it was the mirtazapin or that i might been drugged?
I sold 30 mg of these to a kid in school along with 2 mg of xanax and well we both were fucked. The dude was so fucked his mouth was wide open with hiccups and spit was coming out of his mouth. He couldnt walk and even bumped his fucking head on the wall. He later passed out in class. I had a fucking axiety attack dat day as i was scared that he gonn die or gonna get caught but miraculously niether happened. Scariest day of my life!
Beware when taking this medicine! I warn you people! It caused me to have sexual dysfunction, hypogonadism. It also led me to having panhypopituitarism, meaning your hormones will be at extremely low levels. It raised my prolactin levels leading to hyperprolactinemia. This is bad for males because again it leads to lowering hormones like sex hormones, in addition to your testosterone and thyroid. It led to me getting an macroadenoma, a tumor of the pituitary. It also works in the region of the hypothalamus, Supra charismatic nucleus, affecting your hunger, sleep, thirst. I can not sleep without taking melatonin supplements now. Doctors are baffled at how this happened. I have been now seen at the NIH and John Hopkins for research and treatment. I warn you folks do not take these psych meds without doing research!
